Zawadzka Temagami Area Rock Art 159 Beyond the Sacred: Temagami Area Rock Art and Indigenous Routes Dagmara Zawadzka The rock art of the Temagami area in northeastern Ontario represents one of the largest concentrations of this form of visual expression on the Canadian Shield. Created by Algonquian-speaking peoples, it is an inextricable part of their cultural landscape. An analysis of the distribution of 40 pictograph sites in relation to traditional routes known as nastawgan has revealed that an overwhelming majority are located on these routes, as well as near narrows, portages, or route intersections. Their location seems to point to their role in the navigation of the landscape. It is argued that rock art acted as a wayfinding landmark; as a marker of places linked to travel rituals; and, ultimately, as a sign of human occupation in the landscape. Historical Representations of Lake Sturgeon by Native and Non-Native Artists
HISTORICAL REPRESENTATIONS OF LAKE STURGEON BY NATIVE AND NON-NATIVE ARTISTS Christopher Hannibal-Paci First Nations Studies University of Northern British Columbia 3333 University Way Prince George, British Columbia Canada, V2N 4Z9 Abstract I Resume Discussions of landscapes in the earliest accounts of traders in northem Ontario and Manitoba depict a land rich in resources. Native people, who lived in these spaces where the Europeans travelled and settled, saw the world through their own eyes. But what did these groups see? This paper discusses changing representations of lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulves cens), noting differences in the stories and images presented by Native and non-Native people. He and his family moved to Kenora, Ontario soon after his father, Alfred Daniel Alexander Dewdney, was named the second Bishop of Keewatin. Selwyn received his primary and secondary education in Prince Albert and Kenora before attending the University of Toronto and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Astronomy and English in 1931. -
Indian Rock Paintings of the Great Lakes
— INDIAN ROCK PAINTINGS OF THE GREAT LAKES by Selwyn Dewdney and Kenneth E. Kidd This book describes in word and illustration the results of an exciting quest on the part of its authors to dis- cover and record Indian rock paintings of Northern Ontario and Minnesota. Numerous drawings were made from these pictographs at a hundred dif- ferent sites; the originals range in age from four to five hundred years to a thousand, and were done w'ith the simplest materials: fingers for brushes, fine clay impregnated with ferrous oxide giving the characteristic red paint. Where an overhanging rock protected a vertical face from drip- ping water or on dry, naked rock faces the Indians recorded the forest life with which they lived in intimate association—deer, caribou, rabbit, heron, trout, canoes, animal tracks and also abstractions which puzzle and intrigue the modern viewer. Many of the paintings could only have been done from a canoe or a convenient rock ledge. Selwyn Dewdney travelled many thousands of miles by canoe to make the drawings of the pictographs which illustrate every page of this fascinating and attractive book. He provides also a general analysis of the materials used by the Indians, of their subject- matter and the artistic rendering given to it, and his artist's journal records in detail the sites he visited, the paint- ings he found at each, the com- parisons among them that came to mind, the references to rock paintings in early literature of the Northwest. REPORT MEETING TYPE: Regular Council Meeting TO: Council FROM: Vicki Blanchard, Economic Development Manager DATE: February 15, 2017 SUBJECT: RP-2017-015 - Friendship Accord TITLE: Friendship Accord RECOMMENDATION: THAT Council receives this report as updated information pertaining to the Sioux Lookout Friendship Accord. PURPOSE: The purpose of this report is to advise Council: 1. THAT the Sioux Lookout Friendship Accord continues to be a leader in Municipal Indigenous relations. BACKGROUND: In 2012, the Municipality of Sioux Lookout celebrated the signing of the Sioux Lookout Friendship Accord in partnership with their neighbouring First Nation communities of Lac Seul and Slate Falls. In 2013, the members of the Sioux Lookout Friendship Accord celebrated again the continued growth of the Accord with the signing of an additional member, Cat Lake First Nation. Page 1 of 17 In 2015, Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (KI) reached out to the Sioux Lookout Friendship Accord members inquiring whether they could join the Accord in efforts to build stronger relations with isolated Far North First Nation communities and shortly thereafter, Mishkeegogamang First Nation expressed an interest in joining the Sioux Lookout Friendship Accord as well. In 2016, the Sioux Lookout Friendship Accord partners recognized that their efforts as group working together on important social and economic issues has led to other opportunities such as; the First Nations-Municipal Community Economic Development Initiative (CEDI), the Ke-ondaatiziying Regional Conference, the Regional Distribution Centre-Northern Logistics Project; the Burden Reduction Project and as of recent the Shared Territory Protocol and Resource Working Group. DISCUSSION: Increased First Nations participation in the local economy and creating economically sustainable communities through the core sectors of forestry, mining, energy, transportation, health and wellness and tourism is front and centre in the Accord Guiding Principles. -

This passage is a classic statement by a new arrival of how difficult it will be for an immigrant populace to forge a literature in a new land.
