It has not been seen in the UK since 1930. The sitter, Francesco Giamberti da Sangallo, was born in about 1404 and died in or shortly before October 1482. The portrait is posthumous, painted by Piero di Cosimo from a death mask. Giamberti was on the payroll of Cosimo de’ Medici as both an architect and a musician. In the background of the portrait references to both these disciplines are balanced; on the left is a village dominated by a circular structure behind which is a palace, in which some of the characteristics of his son’s architectural style seem to be evoked; On the left an open-air mass is being sung, the organ being played by a man wearing a red hat similar to that worn by Giamberti. The exhibition will feature portraits by Raphael,Titian, Botticelli, Van Eyck, Holbein, and Dürer. It runs from 15 October until 18 January next year. Over an intensely active career he has written numerous film scores, including ‘The Duellists’ with Sir Ridley Scott and Lord David Puttnam, which gained the Special Jury Award at the Cannes Festival in 1977, ‘A Month in the Country’ with Kenneth Branagh, which gained him the British Film Institute Anthony Asquith Award for musical excellence in 1989, and ‘The Snowman’, which was nominated for an Oscar after its first screening on Channel 4 in 1982 and has won many other prizes internationally. His famous song ‘Walking in the Air’, for which he also wrote the lyrics, was the success that launched Aled Jones in 1985, whilst his concert version for narrator and orchestra is no performed world-wide as well as the full-length ballet of the same name, launched in 1997 and last year celebrating its 10th consecutive Christmas season for Sadler’s Wells at The Peacock Theatre.

For mostly sociocultural reasons, the majority of early clarinetists were men. While the possibility exists that there may have been more women clarinetists during early time period, current research has identified only a handful. The underrepresentation of women in the standard clarinet history stems both from restrictions on their participation as well as poor documentation of their activities. Given the lack of diversity in clarinet history, the purpose of this research is to promote awareness of the roles, experiences, and achievements of the women involved in the clarinet history during the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries, many of whom may have unfortunately gone unrecognized, been discounted, or forgotten. This research first provides a historical overview of the clarinet and its players, as well as history of women in music and their relationships with orchestral instruments. There are four chapters, which present biographies of women clarinetists who were active as soloists, orchestral players, teachers, and composers. This document also includes research regarding the all-women orchestras in Europe and America, and provides information focusing on the clarinetists of the American all-women orchestras.
