The inaugural concert of the newly-formed Bach Society of Dayton and the first concert partnership with Kettering Children’s .

Many of the singers from the concert were from the former Dayton Bach Society, and some were new to the group. Together, they were dedicated to high performance standards and promised to provide diver- sity as well as loyalty to the Bach Society heritage.

A concert dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Virginia W. Kettering (1097-2003), patron and supporter of the Bach Society and many other community arts organizations.

The concert featured Bach’s Cantata 4. It was one of the earliest, if not the first, cantata written when Bach was still a student. In Bach’s first year in Leipzig he so thoroughly revised the work that it is not known how much of the original remains.

The closing concert of the Bach Society of Dayton’s inaugural season.

The concert featured one of Bach’s most glorious Motets, Lobet den Herrn, which is perhaps the most mysterious of Bach’s motets in terms of date and occasion of composition. The text comes from Psalm 117:1-2. It is the only motet set for four voice parts and an independent continuo line.

The concert featured the aspects of flight connected with traditional sacred themes in choral music: the winged seraphim surrounding the throne of God; Jesus’ ascension into the heavens; and spirits soaring in the joy of salvation. The music served to evoke the feelings and sensations of flight.

The spirituality of Bach combined with the African-American spiritual tradition.

The concert featured five spirituals from A Child of our Time, an oratorio which acknowledges and draws from the tradition of both and J.S. Bach. It is perhaps Tippett’s most famous work. He began writing the oratorio at the beginning of World War II in response to his outrage at the world’s apathy to the plight of Jewish refugees. The story is based on newspaper headlines from the day.

The concert featured the Mozart grand Mass in C Minor. The work was composed during 1782/83. In a letter to his father Leopold dated 4 January 1783, Mozart mentioned a vow he made to write a mass when he married his fiancée Constanze and brought her to Salzburg. Constanze sang theEt incarnatus est at its premiere.

Music from the English Renaissance, including pieces by Byrd and Gibbons with accompaniment by the period instrument viols of the Catacoustic Consort.

Byrd’s output of 450+ compositions amply justifies his reputation as one of the great masters of European Renaissance music. Perhaps his most impressive achievement as a composer was his ability to transform so many of the main musical forms of his day and stamp them with his own identity.

One of the greatest of Bach’s choral masterpieces vividly portraying the story of Christ’s last days.

Once written, Bach rarely revised his compositions, but the St. John Passion was one of the few works he revised and revived intermittently till the end of his life. The resulting telling of the Crucifixion is extraor- dinarily moving, achingly beautiful, and dramatically powerful. It is perhaps his most daring, forceful, and poetic work.

A celebration of Mother’s Day with largely secular fare from Haydn, Pinkham, and Bach. The concert featured Wedding Cantata, written by Daniel Pinkham in 1956 for the marriage of his friends Lotje and Arthur Loeb. The texts from the Song of are great favorites at weddings and anniver- saries. Pinkham invested them with a variety of musical contrasts and moods — sudden, serene, racing, slow, eager, contemplative, longing, intense — all in a 10-minute composition.

Bach’s masterpiece and final great achievement. Although Bach’s Mass in B Minor is revered for its overwhelming dramatic sweep and sense of unity, it was not originally created as a single work. It is made up of music composed over a 25-year period, some of it adapted, some of it new. Its manuscript is divided into four large sections with no overall title, and it came to be called the Mass in B Minor only by later generations. It was not performed complete until 1859, more than a century after Bach’s death.

A mostly 20th century program of music, from the serious to the joyous.

The concert featured Vaughan Williams’ Mass in G Minor, perhaps notable as the first mass written in a distinctly English manner since the sixteenth century. The concert also featured Dello Joio’s A Jubilant Song, one of the first pieces of 20th Century choral music; an excellent example of mid-century Americana style with its frequent time changes, syncopations, pantonal harmonies and explosive accompaniment.

33 MAY 2009 ISRAEL IN EGYPT

Handel’s version of the Israelites’ triumph over Pharaoh.

Israel in Egypt was originally performed in 1739, in the same season as the premiere of his oratorio . Unlike Saul and Handel’s other early , Israel in Egypt is almost entirely a choral piece, with rela- tively few arias for soloists interspersed among the choruses. Rather than unveiling a plot that is driven by individual passions and actions, it presents and celebrates the story of a people.

The Christmas Oratorio, completed around Christmastime of 1734, is not an oratorio in the usual sense. Instead the format is that of a cantata. Similar to the Matthew and John passions, it includes a tenor Evangelist who narrates the story of the birth of Christ as it appears in Luke 2:1–21 and Matthew 2:1–12.

G. F. Handel’s rousing oratorio celebrating Judas Maccabaeus, the Jewish leader who is honored at Hanuk- kah and praised in the famous chorus “Hail, the Conquering Hero Comes.” Judas Maccabæus falls midway in the major era of Handel’s oratorios—later than his early successes, in- cluding Saul, Israel in Eqypt, , , and (1738-44), but earlier than Solomon (1748), and (1752). Handel wrote Judas Maccabæus in 1746—reportedly in two months. Its first perfor- mance took place—at Covent Garden—on 1 April 1747.

One of Bach’s most significant works.

J.S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor weaves together some of his greatest pieces along with new, less familiar compositions. It is an established part of the choral repertoire but is also an enigmatic work. Although infrequently performed, the Mass in B Minor has long been considered a true masterpiece.

The first performance of Fauré’s Requiem in the Bach Society’s 13-year history. Fauré himself said in an interview with Louis Aguettant on July 12, 1902 that his “Requiem does not ex- press the fear of death and someone has called it a lullaby of death. But it is thus that I see death: as a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than as a painful experience. . . . per- haps I have also instinctively sought to escape from what is thought right and proper, after all the years of accompanying burial services on the organ! I know it all by heart. I wanted to write something different.”

A program of instrumental and choral works from the post-Edwardian era portrayed in Downton Abbey, spanning the period of 1912 to the dawning of 1926. The concert featured music with a strong connection to England. Some of it was composed in the de- cades just before or following the death of King Edward VII in 1910. The concert also reached back to G.F. Handel and T.A. Arne—nearly two centuries before—for music widely used in ceremonies to honor and remember monarchs and hail Britannia’s majesty.

The crown jewel of choral music and a special tribute to Bach Society accompanist Alan Kimbrough for his many years of continuing service. The concert presented Bach’s powerful Passion; a uniting of biblical and reflective elements with transcen- dent music. The sacred oratorio, written by Bach in 1727, sets chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew to music, interspersed chorales and arias. The first part includes the Last Supper and the betrayal and arrest of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. The second part depicts the trial, crucifixion, and burial.
