  • Electricity and Lightning-Cloudburst (Grofe)
Electricity and lightning-Cloudburst (Grofe) Summary Students will connect the concept of positive and negative ions making lightning to the concept of lightning occurring in nature. The will use the music of Grofe' "Cloudburst" to aide the learning. Additional Core Ties Science - 5th Grade Standard 4 Objective 1 Time Frame 1 class periods of 45 minutes each Group Size Large Groups Life Skills Aesthetics, Thinking & Reasoning, Employability Materials A recording of "Cloudburst" from Grand Canyon Suite by Grofe'. Pictures of Grand Canyon Pictures of rainstorms and lightning Listening map http://www.minnesotaorchestra.org/education/curricula/musicnoisesilence/musicnoisesilence_part5.p df Background for Teachers The teacher should know the basic concepts of how lightning is formed. To put it simply, lightning is electricity. It forms in the strong up-and-down air currents inside tall dark cumulonimbus clouds as water droplets, hail, and ice crystals collide with one another. Scientists believe that these collisions build up charges of electricity in a cloud. The positive and negative electrical charges in the cloud separate from one another, the negative charges dropping to the lower part of the cloud and the positive charges staying ins the middle and upper parts. Positive electrical charges also build upon the ground below. When the difference in the charges becomes large enough, a flow of electricity moves from the cloud down to the ground or from one part of the cloud to another, or from one cloud to another cloud. In typical lightning these are down-flowing negative charges, and when the positive charges on the ground leap upward to meet them, the jagged downward path of the negative charges suddenly lights up with a brilliant flash of light.

  • Kol Nidre: Variations on a Theme a GREAT JEWISH BOOKS TEACHER WORKSHOP RESOURCE KIT
Kol Nidre: Variations on a Theme A GREAT JEWISH BOOKS TEACHER WORKSHOP RESOURCE KIT Teachers’ Guide This guide accompanies resources that can be found at: http://teachgreatjewishbooks.org/resource-kits/kol-nidre-variations- theme. Introduction Kol Nidre is a legal formula recited in the evening service that begins the holiday of Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of atonement. This ritual recitation may have been developed in the early medieval period as a response to Jews being forced to convert, either to Christianity or Islam. The text absolves those who recite it from vows in God’s name made under duress, so that the breaking of such vows is not counted as a sin. Its dramatic recitation and musical setting lend it an emotional intensity that has allowed the prayer to develop resonances beyond the stated meaning of the text. The High Holidays—the celebration of the new year on the Jewish calendar, which includes Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur—have in general come to signify a return to tradition and to religious duties that may have been neglected over the past year, and Kol Nidre serves as a climactic moment of this return. This kit gathers together examples of the use of Kol Nidre in modern Jewish literature, music, and film, asking students to consider how the prayer has come to stand for adherence to and return to Jewish tradition, and what precisely that return entails. • UNCERTAIN GLORY (The Other Casablanca) for THOMAS Mcnulty- in Appreciation and Gratitude*
UNCERTAIN GLORY (The other Casablanca) For THOMAS McNULTY- in appreciation and gratitude* Uncertain Glory is the 29th in the celluloid career of Errol Flynn. The only film of Flynn’s released for the year 1944 falling between Northern Pursuit and Objective Burma. The first of a series of seven films (ultimately amended to three) to be made by Flynn’s company, Thomson Productions, which was contracted to Warners both for use of facilities and release arrange-ments. It has the distinction of being the 5th of 8 films in which Flynn would die, along with Charge of the Light Brigade, Dawn Patrol, The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, They Died With Their Boots On, Rocky Mountain, Too Much Too Soon, and The Roots of Heaven). And also the 4th of 5 dealing with the subject of World War 2- the others being Desperate Journey, Edge of Darkness, Northern Pursuit, and Objective Burma. It’s Flynn’s first important film post-trial. He’s in mid-career, and about 33 years old. He is vulnerable and changed. And the performance shows it- someone in transition, from a boyish attitude toward life into a man’s more serious focus (remember we’re speaking about Flynn: he still had his extra-curricular activities- only less of them). At about this time he was paying alimony and support, married**, LIVING WITH Nora, a father, working on the novel Showdown (writing always having a calming effect), and a recently successful USO and bond tour (meaning public acceptance). He chose this film as his next project, and it DID NOT capitalize on (although there are the usual references to a young man in search of feminine company) the rape trial (the ordeal actually started on 10/11/42 with 2 policemen coming to the house and culminated in an acquittal on 2/6/43) by suggesting the new image he would ultimately be saddled with.

  • Adele S. Buffington
Adele S. Buffington Also Known As: Jesse Bowers, Adele Burgdorfer of St. Louis, Colt Remington Lived: February 12, 1900 - November 23, 1973 Worked as: guild co-founder, movie theatre ticket cashier, scenario writer, screenwriter Worked In: United States by Matthew Hipps Building on her early success in silent cinema, Adele S. Wayne, Indiana, newspaper as saying: “I had always wanted to write, but never had the nerve to try before. But there came the hour when I simply had to do it—and I did. Every night when my work in the cage was done, I went to the library and read, getting details and atmosphere for the scenes I had in mind—for the background against which I wanted those dear people I knew to move and make drama. Then when everyone else was asleep, I would write and write” (qtd. in McCreadie 58). Buffington’s career officially began at the young age of nineteen when she sold her first script, La Petite (1919), to an independent studio for three hundred dollars and was subsequently hired to work for Thomas H.
