The Stoic Who Valued Truth More Highly Than the Dogmas of His Own School CHAPTER FIVE POSIDONIAN PUZZLES 1. Introduction The real hero of Galen's cast of characters is Posidonius of Apamea (c.l35-55 BCE), the Stoic who valued truth more highly than the dogmas of his own school. If we may believe Galen, he abandoned the unitary conception of the intellect and returned to the 'ancient account', i.e. the Platonic tripartition. Indeed, Galen tells us, he had formally directed his On Affections (IIrpl. n:a8&v) against Chrysippus' treatise of the same title. 1 Galen moreover appeals to the authority of Posidonius in claiming that Cleanthes and Zeno had postulated permanent non-rational factors in the soul. Among the Stoics featuring in PHP 4 and 5 Chrysippus emerges as an isolated case, though an admittedly influential one. The great majority of the Stoics Galen had encountered clung to the Chrysippean model-which explains why Galen deals with Chrysippus so extensively.2 Two substantial fragments of Chrysippus' On Affections are quoted by Galen not directly from that work but from that of Posidonius (see above, pp. 8 f.). In addition we find in PHP 4-5 long stretches of text in which Galen quotes from, or at least frequently refers to, Posidonius-so much so that a great number of these passages (some several modern pages long) have found their way into Edelstein­ Kidd's Posidonius. Galen's obvious interest in playing off Posidonius and Chrysippus against each other does not entail that he is unreliable. The evidence he produces needs to be assessed bit by bit. Indeed it has convinced many modern students that the above picture of the development of 1 See PHP 5.6.45. POSIDONIAN PUZZLES 199 early Stoic psychology is broadly correct.3 Here, as elsewhere, the verbatim quotations produced by Galen have lent an irresistible plausibility to his case. PHP books 4 and 5 were influential, if not decisive, in the elevation of Posidonius to the status of the pivotal thinker, who brought about the transition between the school's founding fathers and Imperial Stoicism.4 This assumption also served to justify the periodisation in which Posidonius and his teacher Panaetius feature as the main representatives of so-called Middle Stoicism. Today, however, the picture constructed by Galen in PHP 4-5 is no longer accepted without reservations. The evidence for Zeno and Cleanthes to be found in other sources is slim, but most historians doubt whether Chrysippus differed from them to any significant degree.5 Further, the alleged 'unorthodoxy' of Posidonius has been questioned by Fillion-Lahille (1984)6 and Cooper (1998) .7 In general, other sources than Galen are brought to bear on the question. I find its major conclusions entirely convincing: (1) the analysis of the difference between Epicurean and Stoic attitudes to suicide; (2) the account of the original Stoic position; (3) the argument that Seneca is an orthodox Stoic about suicide; and (4) the very interesting claims about the role of dif- ferent sorts of freedom in Seneca's arguments. Although I am persuaded by his analysis, I am inclined to be somewhat more critical of the Stoic position than he seems inclined to be: for I think that in a crucial way it is internally incoherent. In what follows, therefore, I want to focus on a problem in the Stoic account itself, with respect to the ambivalence the suicide theory reveals toward the importance of externals. I shall do this by focusing on one line of argument leading to suicide, in Seneca's De Ira.l 1. The Stoics famously hold that only virtue is worth choosing for its own sake. And virtue all by itself suffices for a complete- ly fulfilled and fulfilling human life, that is, for eudaimonia.     Mathematical discourse in philosophical authors: Examples from Theon of Smyrna and Cleomedes on mathematical astronomy Nathan Sidoli Introduction Ancient philosophers and other intellectuals often mention the work of mathematicians, al- though the latter rarely return the favor.1 The most obvious reason for this stems from the im- personal nature of mathematical discourse, which tends to eschew any discussion of personal, or lived, experience. There seems to be more at stake than this, however, because when math- ematicians do mention names they almost always belong to the small group of people who are known to us as mathematicians, or who are known to us through their mathematical works.2 In order to be accepted as a member of the group of mathematicians, one must not only have mastered various technical concepts and methods, but must also have learned how to express oneself in a stylized form of Greek prose that has often struck the uninitiated as peculiar.3 Be- cause of the specialized nature of this type of intellectual activity, in order to gain real mastery it was probably necessary to have studied it from youth, or to have had the time to apply oneself uninterruptedly.4 Hence, the private nature of ancient education meant that there were many educated individuals who had not mastered, or perhaps even been much exposed to, aspects of ancient mathematical thought and practice that we would regard as rather elementary (Cribiore 2001; Sidoli 2015). Starting from at least the late Hellenistic period, and especially during the Imperial and Late- Ancient periods, some authors sought to address this situation in a variety of different ways— such as discussing technical topics in more elementary modes, rewriting mathematical argu- ments so as to be intelligible to a broader audience, or incorporating mathematical material di- rectly into philosophical curricula.

For his happiness was based in his virtue and as he had perfect virtue, he had perfect and lasting happiness. Yet the Peripatetics saw that happiness was not a self-sufficient idea and was instead an amalgamation of external goods. Virtue for them was a factor that contributed to happiness, for the Stoics it was essential for happiness. It would appear on inital observation that the life of the Stoic sage was a solitary one, aloof from the rest of humanity. Yet the Stoics maintained that this was the best and happiest form of life, a life lived in accordance with Nature. However, the Peripatetics maintained that nature loves nothing solitary and man is not a solitary animal. In order for him to fullfill his natural end and achieve eudaimonia he would natually be drawn towards the company of others. Cicero highlights the tension between Stoic idealism and Peripatetic pragmatism in his discussion on happiness. When he essentially he askes in Book Five of the Tusculan Disputations.

The Isagoge is important to us as a witness to a stage of Greek astronomy that was both less advanced and less homogeneous in method than Ptolemy's. Approximate knowledge of when its author lived would be useful in several respects, for exam- ple in tracing the diffusion of elements originating in Babylonian lunar theory and in Hipparchus' work. Recent scholarship frequently cites Neugebauer's dating of Geminus to about A.D. 50, which has largely superseded the dating to the first half of the first century B.C. that used to be widely accepted.' Both dates derive, oddly enough, from analysis of the same passage in the Isagoge. The purpose of this note is to eluci- date the chronological issues, and to present documentary evidence that decisively establishes the earlier dating. The limits established by ancient citations are not very narrow. Isa- goge 4 mentions Hipparchus as an authority concerning constellations, and though Geminus does not say so, the lengths of the astronomical seasons listed in Isagoge I are the values that Hipparchus had used in deriving a model for the sun's motion.     Epictetus, Stoicism, and Slavery Defense Date: March 29, 2011 By: Angela Marie Funk Classics Department Advisor: Dr. Peter Hunt (Classics) Committee: Dr. Jacqueline Elliott (Classics) and Dr. Claudia Mills (Philosophy) Funk 1 Abstract: Epictetus was an ex-slave and a leading Stoic philosopher in the Roman Empire during the second-century. His devoted student, Arrian, recorded Epictetus’ lectures and conversations in eight books titled Discourses, of which only four are extant. As an ex- slave and teacher, one expects to see him deal with the topic of slavery and freedom in great detail. However, few scholars have researched the relationship of Epictetus’ personal life and his views on slavery. In order to understand Epictetus’ perspective, it is essential to understand the political culture of his day and the social views on slavery. During his early years, Epictetus lived in Rome and was Epaphroditus’ slave. Epaphroditus was an abusive master, who served Nero as an administrative secretary. Around the same period, Seneca was a tutor and advisor to Nero. He was a Stoic philosopher, who counseled Nero on political issues and advocated the practice of clemency. In the mid to late first-century, Seneca spoke for a fair and kind treatment of slaves. He held a powerful position not only as an advisor to Nero, but also as a senator. While he promoted the humane treatment of slaves, he did not actively work to abolish slavery. Epaphroditus and Seneca both had profound influences in the way Epictetus viewed slaves and ex-slaves, relationships of former slaves and masters, and the meaning of freedom.
