CALZARETTA REACHES 1,000-YARD RUSHING MARK: With his third rush of the day against Western, Nick Calzaretta surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for a season, becoming just the fifth C of I player to reach the elusive club. The junior joins Tom Winbigler (1948 and 1949), Ted Martin (1953), Rich Maggard (1957) and Darius-James Peterson (2017) as the only players to reach the 1,000-yard plateau. Calzaretta finished Saturday with 82 yards and two touchdowns – pushing his season total to 1,070 yards (No. 4 all-time) – needing 193 yards to break the single-season record. Calzaretta has rushed for 10 touchdowns this season – joining Winbigler and Peterson as the only players to record multiple seasons with 10 or more rushing touchdowns.

HELLYER CAPS BIG DAY: An injury to back-up running back Dominic Garzoli forced Justin Hellyer to carry more of the load in the backfield against Western, with the senior taking advantage of his extended action. Hellyer rushed for a career-high 97 yards in the win, including a game-clinching 69-yard burst in the fourth quarter. He currently ranks third on the team with 341 rushing yards on the season.

PETERSON CRACKS 2,000-YARD PLATEAU: Quarterback Darius-James Peterson shook off a tough first half to lead his team to victory, passing for 200 yards and a touchdown pass for the 18th-straight game. The senior, who threw two interceptions for the first time since Week 9 of 2018, recorded his fifth-straight game with 200 or more passing yards – a new single-season record, while pushing his season passing yards total to 2,000, joining Teejay Gordon as the only C of I players to reach the benchmark. Peterson added 30 rushing yards and is now 215 yards shy of the all-time rushing yards record and 411 yards of total offense away from becoming the first C of I player with 10,000 yards of total offense.

FORCING TURNOVERS: Facing the team with the top turnover margin in the Frontier Conference, the Coyotes turned the tide in the game by forcing three third quarter Montana Western turnovers – converting them into 21 points. Canyon Olsen stripped Trey Mounts of the football on a punt return that was recovered by Dylan Martinez; Jordan Nero recorded an interception deep in C of I territory to thwart a Bulldogs drive; with Josh Elsberry electrifying the crowd with a 26-yard interception return for a score. It was the second time in 2019 that the Yotes have forced three or more turnovers in a game.

NEUTRALIZING THE RUN GAME: The Coyote run defense was crucial in Saturday’s win, as C of I limited Western to just 73 yards on the ground and just 2.1 yards per carry. It was the third-straight game allowing fewer than 75 yards and the sixth time this season a team has failed to rush for 90 yards – with the 83.7 yards allowed per game No. 6 in the NAIA.

RIVERS HAS HUGE DAY: Linebacker Forrest Rivers was a menace to the Western offense on Saturday, recording his best game of an already stellar 2019 season - earning Frontier Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors. The 4-year starter recorded 10 tackles – including four tackles for loss, two sacks and a quarterback hurry – in the big win. Rivers moved into third-place on the all-time C of I tackles chart (224), while breaking the all-time school record with 36 career tackles for loss.

GETTING TO THE QUARTERBACK: Putting pressure on the Western quarterback was key to C of I’s success in the second half, as the Yotes finished the afternoon with five sacks and three additional quarterback hurries. Along with the two sacks from Forrest Rivers, both Danny Garcia and Landon Clark-Gammell recorded sacks – each pushing their season total to six – with Keagan McCoy recording his third sack of 2019. The 31 sacks by the Coyotes in 2019 rank No. 6 in the NAIA.

BIG SECOND HALF FOR SECONDARY: The Coyote secondary made key adjustments at halftime on Saturday – paying off big dividends. After Western’s Jon Jund completed 11-of- 15 passes in the first half, C of I limited the quarterback to 5-of-14 passing – including two interceptions – prior to a late game touchdown drive. Safety David Ford had three pass break -ups, with both Tristen Alesi and Jordan Nero each adding one. Nero, making his first start of the season, had seven tackles on the day.

SECOND HALF SUCCESS: The Coyote defense has been stellar after making adjustments at halftime – limiting opponents to just three touchdowns and 24 total points after the break over the past five games. C of I has not allowed a third quarter point since the season opener vs. Eastern Oregon, with the squad allowing just 16.5 points per game on the season.

MITCHELL ADDS TO HIS SCORING RECORD: It was a perfect day for kicker Kyle Mitchell, converting five extra points and adding a 41-yard field goal - earning Frontier Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors for the third time this season. The senior upped his single-season field goal record to 10, while establishing a new single-season kick scoring record with 70 points. Mitchell leads the Frontier Conference and ranks fifth nationally in both field goals made and kick scoring.
