Taína Asili y La Banda Rebelde www.TainaAsili.com – [email protected] Internship Description Taina Asili, LLC is currently seeking an intern to assist with booking, promotions, and research for Taina Asili y La Banda Rebelde (TABR), a musical group based in Albany, NY. Taína Asili, LLC is an enterprise dedicated to lasting social change. TABR is multi-genre band with a message of social and environmental justice based out of Albany, NY. TABR believe that music is not only their livelihood but a powerful means of making positive change in this world. TABR support efforts to bring about justice and peace by creating music which carries this message, as well as by participating in projects, events and programs which seek to work towards this goal. TABR has just released their debut album "War Cry". In addition to album promotion, the band is currently in the midst of booking national and international tours. Responsibilities may include: • researching venues • sending out promotional materials • locating potential business sponsors • researching promotional opportunities such as radio, print and online media. Taina Asili, LLC is looking for energetic interns who can work a flexible schedule (approximately 10-15 hours a week), and who are able to work at least a summer or a semester's length of time. The internship may be extended. This internship is a great opportunity for anyone, particularly artists, interested in learning the behind the scenes of growing their own socially responsible business. The internship is not paid, however there are many opportunities to receive excellent practical experience. About Taina Asili: Taina Asili is has been working as a vocalist, composer, poetry workshop instructor and event organizer for over 10 years. Her live band, Taina Asili y La Banda Rebelde is a blend of soulful vocals laid over a unique infusion of hip hop, rock, reggae and Afro-Caribbean sounds, with band members who have origins in Puerto Rico, Sicily, Greece, Brazil, Ghana and Spain. Taina is a winner of the 2005 Transformation Award given by the Leeway Foundation each year to a select few of women artists who profoundly use their work towards social change. Taina has shared the stage with artists such as Ursula Rucker, Sonia Sanchez, Pamela Means, Dead Prez, and Talib Kweli. Taina is dedicated to using her art as a tool for personal and social transformation, and is based in the concrete organizing work she is in involved in. She has a BA in Women's Studies from Binghamton University and a MA in Transformative Language Arts from Goddard College. The party targeted the harsh neoliberal cutbacks, budget cuts and privatization imposed by the “Troika” — the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank and the European Commission. The new government immediately took concrete measures against the austerity program imposed by the banks. As the Jan. 28 British Guardian put it: “One by one [the austerity measures] were rolled back, blitz- krieg-style, mercilessly, ruthlessly, with rat-a-tat effi- ciency. “First the barricades came down outside the Greek parliament. Then it was announced that privatization schemes would be halted and pensions reinstated. And then came the news of the reintroduction of the 751- euro monthly minimum wage. … “After that, ministers announced more measures: the scrapping of fees for prescriptions and hospital visits, the restoration of collective work agreements, the re- hiring of workers laid off in the public sector, the grant- ing of citizenship to migrant children born and raised in Greece.” The measures that Syriza announced concerning an end to privatization and restoration of the workers’ stan- dard of living are estimated to cost 13.2 billion euro. Despite the fact that Greece owes the Troika 240 billion euro, the Syriza government did not ask permission to break the austerity pact, which these measures surely do.

Protest Music in the Age of Trump By Ron Eyerman The presidential election campaign and the unexpected election of Donald Trump was cause for immediate reaction from the music world in the United States and beyond. Ron Eyerman gives us an overview of that reaction. The presidential election campaign and the unexpected election of Donald Trump was cause for immediate reaction from the music world in the United States and beyond. This chapter will offer a sample of that reaction. Before that however, some general thoughts about music and politics are necessary to introduce the broader frame in which this occurred. Music has always contained a political dimension and has traditionally played a role in American politics. One can look far back in history, to Plato’s Republic and Homer’s Odyssey to find discussion and description of the subversive potential of music and of course those who make it. As portrayed in the Ancient discussion, music can lure and seduce causing individuals and groups to act in ways that they normally would not, as Homer illustrates through the Sirens’ song and the attempts by Odysseys to avoid their call. This seductive aspect stems in part from an inherent, subconscious power that affords music an ability to impact human emotions in a way that other art forms may not. Music tends to invite and unite, an aspect that has found many political uses, in both traditional and protest politics. Traditionally, music has been used to gather and solidify groups during political campaigns, serving as a rallying cry and recruiting tool.
