This comprises the largest and highest area of montane habitat in Britain, much of which is in a relatively pristine condition. It contains the main summits and plateaux with their associated corries, rocky cliffs, crags, boulder fields, scree slopes and the higher parts of some glens and passes. The vegeta- tion is influenced by factors such as exposure, snow cover and soil type. The main zone is considered to be one of the most spectacular mountain areas in Britain and is recognised nationally and internationally for the quality of its geology, geomorphology and topographic features, and associated soils and biodiversity. c14.5% of the Cairngorms Partnership area (75,000ha) is land above 600m asl. Upland heathland is the most extensive habitat type in the Cairngorms Partnership area, covering c41% of the area, frequently in mosaics with blanket bog.

For this reason in the years 2008–2010 a study was initiated on the phenology of 8 dominant Pimplinae species in apple orchards and on their edges, which included shrubberies and roadside avenues of trees and shrubs. Slightly higher numbers of Pimplinae were recorded in orchards compared to their edges. At strong correlation was observed between the counts of Pimplinae in both habitats. The preference of selec- tion of orchards by Pimplinae was observed in the autumn period, while no such preference was found in the spring or summer months. Analyses showed that flowering plants in the orchard edges such asTilia cordata, Symphoricarpos albus, Cirsium arvense and Galium aparine may have attracted Pimplinae to the orchards.

A n ik in & Ir in a V. S h m yto v a received 30.1.2004 Abstract: 47 species of the casebearers (Lepidoptera, Coleophoridae) are recorded from the centre of the European part of Russia. The first investigation in the Lepidoptera from the centre of the European part of Russia was made about 200 years ago. Inspite of it the fauna of Coleophoridae of this territory still has been almost completely unknown until present time. In the course of our study, collections were made from 1984 to 1999 in some parts of Kaluga, Smolensk, Oryel provinces (I. V. Shmytova leg.) and Tula province (L. V. Bolshakov, C. A. Rjabov, A. F. Lakomov leg.). This territory is mainly composed of forest as well as forest-steppe zones (fig. 1). Kaluga, Smolensk and some regions of Tula provinces are typical for the occurence of coniferous (Picea abies (L.) Karst.), broad-leaved (Quercus robur L., Ulmus L, Tilia cordata Mill., Fraxinus excel­ sior L.) and small-leaved forests (Betula L., Populus tremula L., Alnus Mill., Salix L.). Pines (Pinus sylvestris L.) are spread here on the sandy lands. The elements of steppe flora are met mainly in Tula and Oryel provinces, but along the valleys of rivers they penetrate to the north and north-west. It consists of species of Festuca L., Koeleria Pers., Stipa L., Phleum L., Flelictitrichon Bess., Poa L., Ranunculus L, Galium L., Anem­ one L., Salvia L.

In the domains of both Morphology and Taxonomy the study' of Insect genitalia has evoked considerable interest during the past half century. Zander (1900, 1901, 1903) suggested a common structural plan for the genitalia in various orders of insects. This work stimulated further research and his conclusions were amplified by Crampton (1920) who homologized the different parts in the genitalia of Hymenoptera, Mecoptera, Neuroptera, Diptera, Trichoptera Lepidoptera, Hemiptera and Strepsiptera with those of more generalized insects like the Ephe­ meroptera and Thysanura. During this time the use of genitalic charac­ ters for taxonomic purposes was also realized particularly in cases where the other imaginal characters had failed to serve. In this con­ nection may be mentioned the work of Buchanan White (1876), Gosse (1883), Bethune Baker (1914), Pierce (1909, 1914, 1922) and others. Also, a comparative account of the genitalia, as a basis for the phylo­ genetic study of different insect orders, was employed by Walker (1919), Sharp and Muir (1912), Singh-Pruthi (1925) and Cole (1927), in Orthop­ tera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera and the Diptera respectively. It is sur­ prising, work of this nature having been found so useful in these groups, that an important order like the Lepidoptera should have escaped careful analysis at the hands of the morphologists.

Several species of the genus Coleophora were recorded for the first time for some of the Balkan countries. Coleophora herniariae, C. daglarica and C. albipennella are recorded as new for the fauna of Europe. The description Coleophora vardarella Richter, sp. nov., from Macedonia is given. Keywords. The family Coleophoridae Bruand, 1850 belongs to the less known moths of the Balkans, therefore our focus has been oriented towards this large Lepidoptera family. Faunistic and systematic studies of this moth group in the Balkans resulted in interesting findings. One of the most important recent works about the genera Coleophora Hübner, 1822 and Goniodoma Zeller, 1849 of the Balkan Peninsula is the contribution of Richter & Pastorális (2015). As you know, one of the biogenic factors in nature, they have a serious impact on the yield of natural pasture grasses and saxaul. They feed on leaves, stems, roots, flowers and seeds of plants, and prevent the reproduction of saxaul. In this regard, it is now necessary to study the biological characteristics of shells that feed on saxaul, determine the phenology, harmfulness, and organize measures to protect against pests. For many reasons (seed production, agricultural engineering, etc.), it is connected with the fact that in the desert zone of South-Eastern and southern Kazakhstan, issues of increasing the area of the saxaul and protecting it from pests are being solved. One of the main reasons is an incomplete study of the species composition of insects-insects that feed on saxaul.

Together with a small party of entomologists from N.E. I.ancashire. invited to eollect at light near the shore at Formby, I experienced the somewhat overwhelming enthrisiasm and hospitality extended to all at “ Warren Mount” . Fed, feted, and equipped, we were taken by cars to the shore, sheets were laid down in front of the headlights, and a memorable night ensued. The night was dark and warm, the moths arrived in great numbers and, true to the Fraser tradition, work did not cease until a few minutes before the last train left Formby, when a hurried dash to the station deposited a happy party of entomologists on the first stage of the journey home. The next meeting was long delayed. The following week-end saw the black-out in force, and it was not until 1946 that T found the Frasens, still enthusiastic, establishing the Eaven Society.
