As per the latest Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission data, the number of active mobile phone subscribers inched up by 55,000 to 15.033 crore at the end of April from 15.028 crore at the end of March. The volume of increase in mobile phone subscribers was 18.86 lakh in January, 17 lakh in February and 15.14 lakh in March. BTRC officials said that the mobile phone operators might have slowed down their move to attain new subscribers after the launch of 4G service. Besides, the regulatory pressure over the mobile phone companies, which have launched 4G service on February 19 this year, to improve quality of service might be a reason for the slowdown in their moves to attain new subscribers, they said. On the other hand, a regulatory move to enact rules on significant market player might have refrained operators from attaining new subscribers, the officials said. Of the four mobile phone companies operating in the country, Grameenphone and Banglalink managed to add new subscribers — 4.51 lakh and 86,000 respectively — in April, but Robi lost 3.51 lakh subscribers and Teletalk 1.31 lakh in the month. The number of active internet users, however, increased by 13.73 lakh to 8.59 crore in April this year from 8.45 crore in March this year. Of the internet users, the number of mobile internet users increased by 13.62 lakh to 8.01 crore in April from 7.88 crore a month ago, while the number of broadband users rose by 11,000 lakh to 5.68 lakh in April from 56.69 lakh in March. The number of WiMAX subscribers remained unchanged at 87,000 at the end of April this year. We often discuss the “China Plus” opportunity in the world apparel market, as the Chinese shift from apparel to high-tech products. But how can we reap this opportunity? Let me first elaborate what the China Plus opportunity actually means. Low-cost manufacturing made China the second largest economy in the world. But rising labour costs, rapid socio-economic progress, and improvement in the people’s living standards led the global giant to take its strategic policy of preferring capital-intensive industries. “Made in China 2025” is a blueprint for Beijing’s plan to transform the country into a high-tech powerhouse that dominates industries like robotics, advanced information technology, aviation, and new energy vehicles. China’s transition is opening space for other countries where China dominates. It is still now the largest apparel exporter in the world, occupying about 37% of global apparel market share. For apparel, the top contenders to become the next China are Vietnam, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, and Cambodia. According to the 2017 McKinsey CPO survey, the three next largest apparel exporters -- Bangladesh, Vietnam, and India -- still lag far behind China. Moreover, the One Belt One Road initiative -- which involves infrastructure investments worth $2 trillion -- will give Chinese garment manufacturers fresh relevance. 1 Back to Table of Contents Daily News Flash Monday, June 25, 2018 For example, new rail links will shorten transport times to Europe, and the initiative will increase China’s access to Africa’s growing consumer markets. As Chinese apparel manufacturers ramp up their outbound investment in countries such as Vietnam and Ethiopia, they may enhance their roles in global apparel sourcing, producing
