Artificial Intelligence in Modern Narratives ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN MODERN NARRATIVES Laurynas Vainius Nordcurrent Vilnius, Lithuania The modern video game industry has exhibited incredible progress in advancement of graphical fidelity and scale exponentially surpassing table-top and other traditional game forms in market success and overall social acceptance. Yet, with the aforementioned aspects of games constantly proving to be great improvements to their physical predecessors, in numerous respects, the narrative aspect of games remained either unchanged or, in majority of cases, regressed when compared to more complex tabletop role-playing games. The vast majority of games feature ergodic, yet static narratives, incapable of adapting to a player if the plot structure is not planned for each user individually. These implementations seem vastly inferior to the function of a game master; a person planning, dictating and later adapting stories that the players experience whilst being engaged in a play. Due to the obvious constraints of digital games, this problem remained unaffected for the larger part of the video game history. Yet, with the new progressions being made in the field of artificial intelligence, more complex narrative structures and systems can be developed to be used in games including games that construct parts or even all of the story for the player acting as a virtual game master. This presentation will analyze a practical example of a simple ergodic narrative structure featuring an engine capable of generating minor story aspects currently in-development for a mobile-oriented market. I will explain the reasoning of several objectives of the engine in addition to the best practices observed through play-testing and technological constraints that we have observed during the development cycle of the game in question. .

  • Developing a Serious Game As a Tool for Collecting Data on Food Waste Behavior
Developing a serious game as a tool for collecting data on food waste behavior Christiaan Verloop Supervisor dr. A.M. Schaafstal Critical observer dr. J. Zwiers Creative Technology, University of Twente July 20, 2018 Abstract A third of all produced food is wasted worldwide, much of which occurs at the consumer. Traditional research methods on food waste behavior have proven unreliable. Hence, new methods are being tested. The purpose of this study is to explore the possibilities of using a serious game as a tool for collecting data on food waste behavior. To this end, a game is devised, developed and evaluated to ultimately answer the questions; How can a serious game collect realistic data on food waste behavior? What data needs to be collected from the game, and how should the data be saved and formatted to be useful to the client? The first chapter explains the origin and the context of the assignment. The second chapter explores the state of the art on serious games and data collection. In the third chapter, multiple ideas are devised after which one is chosen to be developed further. In the fourth chapter the chosen idea is specified, both in terms of gameplay, and in terms of data collection. Next is a description of the realization phase of this project, this includes the game, the data collection, and the documentation. In the next chapter, the game is evaluated with the use of two user tests. Finally, the paper concludes that the data collection and storage were a suitable solution for the developed game, however, it also concludes that the developed game is not a reliable tool for collecting realistic data on food waste behavior.

The good vibes and learning points from the PEGI Congress in November 2010 were taken along into the new year and put to good use. PEGI is well established as the standard system for the “traditional” boxed game market as a trusted source of information for parents and other consumers. We have almost reached the point where PEGI is only unknown to parents if they deliberately choose to ignore video games entirely. A mistake, since practically every child or teenager in Europe enjoys video games. Promoting an active parental involvement in the gaming experiences of their children is a primary objective for PEGI, which situates itself at the heart of that.

  • 68 Video Games and Less Widely Spoken Languages: the Baltic
Video games and less widely spoken languages: The Baltic States Mária Koscelníková Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, Slovakia Abstract Another decade has begun, and video game developers are aiming to provide higher quality video games to give customers the best product possible. In terms of localization, it is difficult to assess whether there has been an increase in the number of languages included in games. Regarding less widely spoken languages in particular, the available range of video game translations is often unpredictable and arbitrary. In our research, we aim to map the situation in selected European countries. Several less widely spoken European languages share similar characteristic features, e.g. Slovak and Czech, Serbian and Croatian, Swedish and Norwegian, and along with financial considerations this results in a high probability of the language with the higher number of speakers being the only available chosen representative of the given region. Following our ongoing research,1 the paper examines the situation in the Baltic states and focuses on legislation and practice regarding the localization and translation of video games in Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia. Introduction During the video game localization process, the chances of a less widely spoken language featuring in a video game are variable2. Having observed hundreds of video games made by developers from countries with official languages that are less widely spoken, there is no guarantee that a video game will be localized into that less widely spoken language, and if it happens, its presence might not be sufficiently visible to the user. In the case of widely spoken languages (e.g.
