Sunshine, Springfi eld, Mo. 65807; (417) 831-0000 2 GREAT LAKES VALLEY CONFERENCE Missouri University of Science and Technology is a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference, joining the league in the 2005-06 academic year as part of a league expansion that brought three institutions into the league. The GLVC, which is constituted of 15 institutions for the 2010-11 season, made its name as a power in NCAA Division II basketball but has enjoyed success in many sports and now the league can claim itself as one of the nation’s top Division II leagues. The GLVC will soon become the largest conference in NCAA Division II, as William Jewell College will become the league’s 16th member in 2011-12 and McKendree University will give the conference 17 full-time institutions in the 2013-14 school year. The confer- ence will also add two associate members -- Central State University and Urbana Univer- Offi ce: sity from the state of Ohio -- to compete in football when the GLVC begins sponsoring 201 S. Capitol Avenue championships in that sport in 2012. Clopton is the first Gatorade Kansas Softball Player of the Year to be chosen from Lawrence Free State High School. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Clopton as Kansas’ best high school softball player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year award to be announced in June, Clopton joins an elite alumni association of past state softball award-winners, including Catherine Osterman (2000-01, Cy Spring High School, Texas), Kelsey Stewart (2009-10, Arkansas City High School, Kan.), Carley Hoover (2012-13 D.W. Daniel High School, S.C.), Jenna Lilley (2012-13, Hoover High School, Ohio), Morgan Zerkle (2012-13 Cabell Midland High School, W. Va.), and Rachel Garcia (2014-15, Highland High School, Calif.). The 5-foot-10 sophomore right-handed pitcher led the Firebirds to a 23-2 record and a second-straight Class 6A state championship this past season. Clopton finished with a 16-1 record, a 0.52 ERA and 212 strikeouts in 107 innings pitched, issuing just 15 walks. A First Team All-State selection as a freshman, she batted .357 with 30 runs scored, 21 RBI, a .541 on-base percentage and a .679 slugging percentage during her sophomore campaign.
