Teresa, Lonely, Hallelujah I Love Her So und I Remember.Natürlich haben wir auch die von Eddies Freundin Sharon Sheeley, einer talentierten Autorin, geschriebenen Balladen dazu gepackt: Lonely, Love Again,Think Of Me und Cherished Memories.Außer- dem können Sie einige von Eddies letzten Aufnahmen hören, die seinen eigenen tragischen Tod auf unheimliche Weise voraus- ahnen lassen – Three Stars (im Gedenken an Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens und The Big Bopper) und sein posthum veröffentlichter Nummer-Eins-Hit aus Großbritannien, Three Steps To Heaven, bei dem er von den Crickets begleitet wurde. The one and only record? Well, all right then, by no means, but informed by my ambition to set down my record of the interweaving of the events of those tumultuous years and the impact of the music made in parallel to them, as I lived through the decade then and as I recall it now. Make no mistake, then: this is unashamedly a highly selective rather than a comprehensive account, dictated wholly by my own personal tastes and interests as they were shaped and developed by the consecutive twists and turns of the era.

  • Down by the Station
5 DOWN BY THE STATION I was down by the station the other day when I thought I heard a whistle blow and a clickety-clack from the railway track echoing times long ago you don’t know half the story these sounds all seemed to say none of this town would even have been built if it wasn’t for the old railway so hail George Stevenson the man who paved the way hail George Stevenson where is your spirit today? Back at the Metro I half expected the old busker to be there, still plaintively warbling between coughs, splutters and asthmatic gasps. o Had he been real or a quirk of my imagination? o Just a sad case I‟d mistaken for Arthur and who, thinking it might be worth a few bob, had taken me for a ride? o It was treatment day after all. Maybe my perceptions were off, the hospital having slipped me a Mickey? o But he was real enough once - many years ago - wasn‟t he? o Only one way to find out - check the number. o But did I really want to call - and maybe discover the truth? Could I handle it? o Open up what might - what most certainly would - be a can of unholy worms? Clutching my reassuringly familiar bag of groceries, I got on the train, sat down and looked around. The carriage was nearly empty now the morning rush was over and even the sun had made a lukewarm appearance. Determined to enjoy the suburban scenery - the back yards and gardens which tell us so much more about people‟s lives than the carefully manicured facades out front - I peered out the window, refusing to even touch my mobile.

  • Eddie Cochran
lt was in June o f 1957 that the fourteen-year-old Paul McCartney first met the sixteen-year-old John Lennon, at a suburban-Liverpool church picnic where Lennon’s Quarrymen were playing. Between sets, McCartney taught Lennon how to play Eddie Cochran’s ‘ ‘Twenty I Flight Rock.” In 1981, the Rolling I Stones chose the same song as one o f the few covers they performed during the course o f their American tour, and it was iamong the leanest and liveliest numbers in their set. Cochran was always highly regarded by British rockers, as he was by British teens in general. He was especially revered by the more recalcitrant bands: the Who tore into his ‘‘Summertime Blues,” emboldening its don’t- treat-us-like-kids message with stinging guitar riffs, and the Sex Pistols transformed ‘ ‘Somethin’ Else’ ’ into a careening punk rom p. Cochran was only twenty-one when he died o f inJuries sustained in a car crash in England. With him at the time were fellow American rocker Gene Vincent, who suffered permanent leg inJuries, and Cochran’s girlfriend, songwriter Sharon Sheeley, with whom he had written ‘ ‘Somethin’ Else. ’ ’ His death, at the edge of adulthood and at the momentous turn o f the decade, left him a permanent symbol of the late-F ifties rebel rocker, p a rt E lvis Presley, part James Dean, untouched by time or changingfashion. Though countless hopefuls had the sam e look and a sim ilar rockabilly-influenced sound, Cochran played his role with a unique exuberance. He was the guitar-crazy guy always ready to do whatever it took to get what he wanted.

For Linda, Evie, Mollie and Michael – always. Author’s Note While I have been fortunate over the years to have enjoyed the company of various ex-members and/or former employees of Led Zeppelin, it should be born in mind at all times that this is an unauthorised biography, written objectively and with no undue pressure from any outside influence to do anything other than tell the story as I honestly see it. It should also be clearly understood that the italicised ‘flashback’ passages of the text are not the actual words of Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Bonham, John Paul Jones and Peter Grant, nor are they actual quotes. Whilst they are all based on thorough biographical research, the facts of which can be found in the Notes & Sources section at the end of this book, the words themselves are the product of my imagination. • THREE STEPS to HEAVEN Door: Arjan Deelen
Bennett zegt hierover: "Eddie was fantastisch. Hij kon zowel drums, bas als gitaar spelen, en hij heeft me geleerd hoe ik rock 'n' roll moest spelen. Veel rock 'n' roll ritmes waren erg simpel, en hij was geïnteresseerd in het veranderen van de baspatronen voor de basdrum.

  • Happy Reading! Robin & Chrissie
EVERLYPEDIA (formerly The Everly Brothers Index – TEBI) Coordinated by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik A complete (as far as is possible) index/encyclopaedia on every facet of Don & Phil Everly, covering their lives, careers, influences and connections – of course, from us as huge fans, with all due respect to them and their families. For more recording information, see also the various detailed discography lists on the EBI website (Everly.Net); for lyrics to songs, please refer to the Lyric List on the same website (http://www.everly.net/file/disco/disco.htm ). KEY/GLOSSARY/NOTES: • WB: Warner Brothers • EBs: The Everly Brothers • LPs, CDs etc. are generally (but not always) referred to throughout as ‘albums’. • Other than important (re)releases, only the original/initial album release is referred to. • Entries are listed under the first letter, including titles that start with a bracket, e.g. ‘(Why Am I) Chained To A Memory’, but exclude ‘The’ in which case they are listed under the second word. • Surnames or family names come first in the index. • Headings are coloured blue for song and album titles and maroon for everything else. • All words in bold type in the text are cross-references to other main entry headings – although no doubt we’ve missed a few! • Entries are generally aimed to be informative and we have attempted to keep them brief though some are lengthy due to the importance and significance in the life and career of Don and Phil.
