  • BOOK of PRAYERS 2021-2024
BOOK of PRAYERS 2021-2024 UNITED THANK OFFERING INTRODUCTION Dear Readers, Life is a collection of innumerable joys and successes as well as trials and sorrows. Paul admonishes us in 1 Thessalonians, “In everything give thanks,” no matter the circumstances. And so we are to thank God for the promotion, the successful surgery, or time with grandchildren. As well, we are to be thankful for any challenge in which God can move: losing a loved one, losing a job, or suffering a health crisis. We can allow God to celebrate with us or instruct us and comfort us. This little “Book of Prayers” owes its existence to a great many prayer warriors, men and women who’ve looked at life through grateful eyes, who’ve been “thankful in all circumstances.” May these prayers uplift you in your celebrations and uphold you when you experience “groans too deep for words.” We encourage each of you, as you experience these prayers, to join with a whole host of people who raise their voices in thanksgiving to God daily. Blessings to you and yours, The 2021–2024 Board of the United Thank Offering 3 UNITED THANK OFFERING PRAYER Gracious God, we come before you in the knowledge that although we are varied in our gifts, we are united as laborers of your harvest. With grateful hearts, we give thanks for the blessings and challenges that inspire the work of the United Thank Offering. May the offerings given to UTO as an expression of gratitude go on to address the needs of our ever-changing world.

lt was in June o f 1957 that the fourteen-year-old Paul McCartney first met the sixteen-year-old John Lennon, at a suburban-Liverpool church picnic where Lennon’s Quarrymen were playing. Between sets, McCartney taught Lennon how to play Eddie Cochran’s ‘ ‘Twenty I Flight Rock.” In 1981, the Rolling I Stones chose the same song as one o f the few covers they performed during the course o f their American tour, and it was iamong the leanest and liveliest numbers in their set. Cochran was always highly regarded by British rockers, as he was by British teens in general. He was especially revered by the more recalcitrant bands: the Who tore into his ‘‘Summertime Blues,” emboldening its don’t- treat-us-like-kids message with stinging guitar riffs, and the Sex Pistols transformed ‘ ‘Somethin’ Else’ ’ into a careening punk rom p. Cochran was only twenty-one when he died o f inJuries sustained in a car crash in England. With him at the time were fellow American rocker Gene Vincent, who suffered permanent leg inJuries, and Cochran’s girlfriend, songwriter Sharon Sheeley, with whom he had written ‘ ‘Somethin’ Else. ’ ’ His death, at the edge of adulthood and at the momentous turn o f the decade, left him a permanent symbol of the late-F ifties rebel rocker, p a rt E lvis Presley, part James Dean, untouched by time or changingfashion. Though countless hopefuls had the sam e look and a sim ilar rockabilly-influenced sound, Cochran played his role with a unique exuberance. He was the guitar-crazy guy always ready to do whatever it took to get what he wanted.

Not that she abandons it: the first three cuts all sport muscular, bouncy basslines and that rock & roll sleaze that complements her powerful vocals so well. There are also "Sneaky Freak" and the closers, though, admittedly, one's a remix and the other a cover of "Tainted Love," no less: a cheeky pick that gets a great tongue-in-cheek rendition here.

To me je potpuno rasturilo!

Right from the start their live shows were wild, with audience members jumping up on stage. I believe before the group was established in 1970 Cavan headed a group called Count Dracula and The Vampires. Faye Coffey and Breathless Dan knew both Cavan and guitarist Lyndon Needs as they used to regularly come to the Rockhouse where the Coffeys lived in Newport, South Wales. Dan’s brother, Mike Coffey, was the group’s drummer. This Welsh group played all over the world, and were very popular among Rock’n’Roll fans. Needs and Grogan wrote so many songs and performed them ‘live’, unlike many British and other Rock’n’Roll revival groups who tended to perform cover versions. Apart from early originals like ‘Teddy-boy Boogie’, ‘Teddy-boy Rock’n’Roll’, ‘My Little Teddy- girl’ and ‘Wildest Cat In Town’ about the Ted fraternity who were their greatest fans, Cavan wrote and performed songs like ‘Rockabilly Rules, OK’ and ‘My Little Sister’s Got a Motorbike’ appealing to the rockabillies and motorbike Rocker crowd as well.

  • The Cotton Boll Weevil and Its Lost Revolution, 1892-1930
THE SOUTH’S GREATEST ENEMY? THE COTTON BOLL WEEVIL AND ITS LOST REVOLUTION, 1892-1930 by JAMES CONRAD GIESEN (Under the Direction of JAMES C. COBB) ABSTRACT When the cotton boll weevil crossed the Mexican border into Texas around 1892 and began a slow march across the Cotton Belt, many predicted that the pest would destroy the plantation South, whose economy and society rested on the production of cotton. As the pest began devouring the staple and moving through the region, land owners, tenants, politicians, and extension agents continued to paint the pest as a direct threat to their livelihoods. Despite the fear that gripped the South, by the time the weevil made its way to the Atlantic Ocean, the pest had made no major, lasting effect on the economic, social, or environmental structures of the region. This dissertation examines how individuals and communities in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia reacted to the arrival of the pest, and how in each place forces acted to use the boll weevil to advance their own purposes. Instead of blaming antiquated credit systems, Jim Crow racial codes, and poor agricultural practices, contemporaries and scholars alike used the boll weevil as a material scapegoat for enduring poverty in the rural South, as well as changes to the land and society that had little to do with the pest’s arrival.
