THE CHILDREN’S HEALTH PLEDGE 2019 #EP4ChildHealth Europe’s Children are her future. They deserve the best of health. I support the campaign of the European Academy of Paediatrics to make the health of children and young adults a European priority and call for: 1. Better training and information on vaccination for health professionals across Europe No child should ever die from a vaccine-preventable disease. Health professionals should have the best tools, training and information to ensure vaccine confidence. Policy-makers across Europe must step up the fight against anti-vaccination disinformation campaigns and make vaccines more accessible. 2. Better antibiotics and more training for antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) All hospitals and health professionals should have AMS programmes / training to serve all patients, especially children. Policy-makers across Europe must take urgent action to deliver better antibiotics and stop copycat antimicrobials. 3. More complete data on the state of health of Europe’s children and young adults Further child health indicators and aggregator tools across Europe are critical to improving child health outcomes across the continent; health data should particularly be expanded to include measures on all children under 15. 4. More funding for paediatric research EU-funded research aims to shape and improve Europe’s future, a future that depends on the health and productivity of the next generation. Investing in paediatric research from neonates to adolescents yields a high return on investment and should be exploited by targeted EU research funding. 5. Stronger rules and more funding to fight childhood obesity Obesity affects 1 in 3 European children, and is the most common chronic disease among children. The EU and its member states must find effective ways of combatting this, including EU wide introduction of healthy food subsidies; marketing restrictions; and community programmes aimed at improving nutrition and encouraging physical activity. 6. Patient centred health care for migrant infants, children and young adults This is a very vulnerable group open to exploitation in many ways. They deserve and need protection, consistent with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
