Marija Vrbetić, Karlovačke tiskare, u: Tomislav Majetić, Katica Miholović, Đuro Zatezalo (ur.), Karlovac 1579-1979, Historijski arhiv u Karlovcu, Karlovac,1979., 276. i Rudolf Strohal, Grad Karlovac opisan i orisan, tisak M. Fogine a trošak piščev, 1909., 228. Romanist i jezikoslovac Petar Skok primjećuje nezgrapnost hrvatskoga naziva karlovačke tiskare koju smatra “točnom pre- slikom“ njemačke inačice. Najopširniju studiju o Carskom katekizmu i njegovoj recepciji vidi kod André Latreille, Le catéchisme impérial de 1806, Les Belles Lettres, Paris, 1935. 6 “Kratko upuchenie u Sueto Pismo” podijeljeno u osam poglavlja (str. 5-16). 7 Gebet-formeln (str. 5-12), Katechismus: Einleitung zu den Lectionen (str. 13) i Erster Theil. - 1852., generalni guverner 1809. - 1811.).12 Ti su se katekizmi trebali koris- 9 Vincenzo Trombetta, L’editoria a Napoli nel decennio francese. Luigi Pepe Volta, the Istituto Nazionale and Scientific Communication in Early Nineteenth-Century Italy* In a famous paper published in Isis in 1969, Maurice Crosland posed the question as to which was the first international scientific congress. Historians of science commonly established it as the Karlsruhe Congress of 1860 whose subject was chemical notation and atomic weights. Crosland suggested that the first international scientific congress could be considered the meeting convened in Paris on January 20, 1798 for the definition of the metric system.1 In September 1798 there arrived in Paris Bugge from Denmark, van Swinden and Aeneae from Germany, Trallès from Switzerland, Ciscar and Pedrayes from Spain, Balbo, Mascheroni, Multedo, Franchini and Fabbroni from Italy. These scientists joined the several scientists already living in Paris and engaged in the definition of the metric system: Coulomb, Mechain, Delambre, Laplace, Legendre, Lagrange, etc. English and American scientists, however, did not take part in the meeting. The same question could be asked regarding the first national congress in England, in Germany, in Switzerland, in Italy, etc. As far as Italy is concerned, many historians of science would date the first meeting of Italian scientists (Prima Riunione degli Scienziati Italiani) as the one held in Pisa in 1839. This meeting was organised by Carlo Luciano Bonaparte, Napoleon’s nephew, with the co-operation of the mathematician Gaetano Giorgini under the sanction of the Grand Duke of Tuscany Leopold II (Leopold was a member of the Royal Society).2 Participation in the meetings of the Italian scientists, held annually from 1839 for nine years, was high: * This research was made possible by support from C.N.R.

Pregledni rad Acta Med Hist Adriat 2017; 15(1);109-138 Review article PROFESSORS, PRINCIPALS AND TEXTBOOKS FROM THE MIDWIFERY SCHOOL IN ZADAR PROFESORI I DIREKTORI TE UDŽBENICI PRIMALJSKE ŠKOLE U ZADRU Jovan Maksimović*, Marko Maksimović* Summary Midwifery in Dalmatia was highly undeveloped at the beginning of the XIX century. The health report from 1813 suggested that there were only 48 midwives in the whole province, and none of them with a degree from the midwifery school. After abolishing the Central Schools („Ecoles Centrales“), which were founded at the time of French reign, and which had the university range, the professors who stayed in Zadar continued their work and teach- ing in the Midwifery School, which was founded in 1820 according to the decision made by Emperor Franz I, and started working in 1821. Since the school was working continuously for the whole century, a lot of professors and prin- cipals passed through. Protomedicus of Dalmatia officially performed the duty of principals of the Midwifery School. Their life and work biographies were gathered in this paper. Although the newcomers were mostly illiterate, very contemporary and valuable textbooks were used at that time. The professors of this school wrote some of these textbooks. This paper analyses those textbooks from the current medical science and praxis point of view, which points out to its significance and contribution of its authors to the reputation that the School enjoyed at that time. Key words: Zadar; Dalmatia; Midwifery School; textbooks. * Scientific Society for the History of Health Culture of Vojvodina, Section for History of Medicine of Serbian Physician Society, Medical Faculty of Novi Sad, Novi Sad, Serbia.

But as the older ones are those which are at present used in daily speech by the vast majority of the inhabitants, we shall not be accused of pedanticism or of political bias if we prefer them to the later versions. We therefore in this book do not speak of Fiume but of Rieka, not of Cattaro but of Kotor, and so forth. In other parts a greater laxity is permissible, since no false impression is conveyed by using the non-Slav version. Thus we have preferred the more habitual Belgrade to the more correct Beograd, and the Italian Scutari to the Albanian Shqodra. The Yugoslavs themselves are too deferential towards the foreign nomenclature of their towns. Thus if one of them is talking to you of Novi Sad he will almost in- variably add, until it grows rather wearisome, the German and the Magyar forms : Neu Satz and Uj Videk. These names and those of persons have been generally spelt in accordance with Croat orthography—that is to say, with the Latin alphabet modified in order to re- produce all the sounds of the Serbo-Croatian language.

  • French Rule in Croatia: 1806-1813
FRENCH RULE IN CROATIA: 1806-1813 Hardly any period of Croatian history left more indelible marks than the rule of the French from 1806 until 1813. The era of the French Revolu tion and Napoleon was equally important for both the Croats and Slovenes, two South Slav neighbors who had lived previously for centuries under the Habsburg domination. To many of these South Slavs the French rule really represented a significant change for the better and liberation from the policy of Germanization, although many people did not realize that at that time. Viewing all the evidence, howevçf, one finds indications that the period of French rule as a whole did not have the significance some historians would like to attach to it. There were really two periods of the French rule in Croatia. The first lasted roughly from the beginning of 1806 until October, 1809, and was limit ed only to Dalmatia. The second period started with the Peace of Schön brunn (October, 1809) when Napoleon created the Illyrian Provinces which embraced most of the Slovenian and some Croatian territory with Dalmatia and ended before the close of 1813. The Croats, whose homeland by the end of the eighteenth century was ruled by three different powers (Austria, Venice, and the Ottoman Empire), enjoyed a very good reputation as soldiers in France. Since the time when the French Army had “un brilliant régiment de cavalerie étrangère qui s’ap pelait ‘Le Royal Cravate’,” 1 until the defeat of Napoleon, the Croatian sol diers were well-known in France. The Croatian sçldiers were mentioned beside the German mercenaries on the historic 14th of July 1789 when the French Revolution erupted with full force.

There is, of course, some overlap, with a few works covering two or all three of these subjects; these have been placed under the heading to which they seem to us predominantly to belong. A thorough perusal of what follows is therefore perhaps the best prescription, and we hope that each reader will find something to satisfy their bookish appetite.
