As a case study of glocalized telenovelas, it deals with the domestic adaptation of one of the most popular Latin American telenovelas, Yo soy Betty, la fea (1999-2001) into the „telenovelle‟ Sara (2007-08), which takes place in a Belgian (more specifically Flemish) context. Therefore, this article specifically asks how Flemish identities are represented through the production process of Sara. While examining the international flow of telenovelas and the cross-cultural adaptation of the telenovela format, this case study considers an additional geopolitical and cultural context, as well as confronts and combines thematic textual analysis with expert interviews. Considering the successful export of „canned‟ telenovelas and the adaptation of this format within the framework of national identity and identification, this paper deals with the emergence of the „telenovelle‟ as a local genre that is inspired by, and modifies, the Latin American original format. 1 Introduction This article focuses on the globalization of the telenovela format in relation to issues of adaptation and national identities. It deals with the question of how the telenovela format is successfully adapted to regions outside Latin America, particularly in Western Europe. Since a television format‟s success is closely tied to the local and national culture, and domestic television programs play a crucial role in the construction and reproduction of national identities (Biltereyst, 1991; Straubhaar, 1991; Waisbord, 2004), we question whether and how national identities are represented through production decisions in the creation process. -

Name: Robin Rietveldt Student Number: 329975 Date: 27/06/2012 The influence of personal characteristics and reference dependence in risky decision-making for a high-stakes game show By Robin Rietveldt Erasmus University, Erasmus School of Economics _____________________________________________________________________ Abstract This paper takes a look at the decision-making of contestants in the game show “De Postcode Loterij Miljoenenjacht”, the format that is also known as “Deal or No Deal” in countries outside The Netherlands. I have sampled 41 episodes looking for differences in decision-making caused by gender and age. No significant effects were found but this might be related to the fact that the semi final has characteristics of a “selection round”. In addition I looked for signs of reference dependence in the data. The data showed “Winners” and “Losers” were less likely to deal compared to their “Neutral” counterparts. This proves that the course of the game is relevant to what decision a contestant will make at the end of the round. My theory for “Winners” not only includes effects of reference dependence but also the overvaluation of small probabilities. Nevertheless, this is a hengchi U very significant development that exemplifies the increasing presence of Latin America and Argentina as international TV contents suppliers. These sales also represent a significant breakthrough into a formerly unreachable market, and show how Argentinean exports are expanding their reach by capturing new audiences (Miracle Screenings, 2007). As explained in the online article “TV for export” (2008), the international trade of TV products can be divided in three categories, generally speaking: pre-recorded shows, TV formats, 1 and customized productions. The first one are those sold exactly as they were first produced for airing on local TV, except that they are either dubbed or subtitled into the destination mother tongue. The second implies selling the program’s idea, logistics and management so that it may be subsequently and entirely reproduced by the buyer. -

Williams ABSTRACT ‗Musical Borrowing in Hip-hop‘ begins with a crucial premise: the hip-hop world, as an imagined community, regards unconcealed intertextuality as integral to the production and reception of its artistic culture. In other words, borrowing, in its multidimensional forms and manifestations, is central to the aesthetics of hip-hop. This study of borrowing in hip-hop music, which transcends narrow discourses on ‗sampling‘ (digital sampling), illustrates the variety of ways that one can borrow from a source text or trope, and ways that audiences identify and respond to these practices. Another function of this thesis is to initiate a more nuanced discourse in hip-hop studies, to allow for the number of intertextual avenues travelled within hip-hop recordings, and to present academic frameworks with which to study them. The following five chapters provide case studies that prove that musical borrowing, part and parcel of hip-hop aesthetics, occurs on multiple planes and within myriad dimensions. These case studies include borrowing from the internal past of the genre (Ch. 1), the use of jazz and its reception as an ‗art music‘ within hip-hop (Ch. 2), borrowing and mixing intended for listening spaces such as the automobile (Ch. 3), sampling the voice of rap artists posthumously (Ch. 4), and sampling and borrowing as lineage within the gangsta rap subgenre (Ch. -
