Winter Weather Alert: Please check our online calendar or call the library to learn about cancellations due to inclement weather. 10 tips for a more sustainable holiday season

Tip #1: Reduce gift giving. Make responsible choices. Excessive consumption contributes to climate change, landfill waste, and health problems. If you must purchase a gift, choose a locally-made product that is sustainably certified and uses minimal toxins. Tip #2: Give a consumable. Choose gifts that can be consumed with minimal processing and waste such as fair trade chocolate, sustainably produced wine, or local foodstuffs; services such as massage therapy, housekeeping, pet-sitting; or a donation to a local charity in honor of the recipient. Tip #3: Re-gift or repurpose. Many of us own beautiful things that we never use. Giving unwanted items new life through a repurpose or re-gift is a great way to minimize consumption. Tip #4: Turn down the dial. Energy use spikes at this time of year. Turn down the thermostat and switch out regular holiday bulbs for high- efficiency LEDs. Tip #5: Consider your tree. Live trees are biodegradable, but require natural resources to grow. Artificial trees are made of and will never decompose. If you want a live tree, shop locally and dispose of properly. If you choose an artificial tree, pick one that you can use for at least a decade before disposal. Tip #6: Get creative. Use recycled paper, cloth bags, reusable gift bags, or other inventive options to wrap gifts. Skip the bows and ribbons— they aren’t recyclable and end up in the landfill. Tip #7: Ditch the holiday card. While there is value to giving and receiving holiday cards, they are typically consumed once and then thrown away or recycled. Consider sending an e-card, or one containing 100% post-consumer waste content, or send postcards. Make gift tags or holiday de cor using cards you receive. Tip #8: Do we really need more cookies and fruitcake? Serve less food at gatherings and parties. Select foods that can be composted and locally sourced. Tip #9: Give back and give time. Volunteer or donate to charity. Sponsor a family for the holidays. Spend time with a neighbor or family member. Tip #10: Be kind to the earth in 2019. Resolve to make lifestyle changes that will benefit the environment in the new year.
