Peter Read’s Picasso et Apollinaire: Métamorphoses de la memoire 1905/1973 was first published in France in 1995 and is now translated into English, revised, updated and developed incorporating the author’s most recent publications on both Picasso and Apollinaire. Picasso & Apollinaire: The Persistence of Memory also uses indispensable material drawn from pioneering studies on Picasso’s sculptures, sketchbooks and recent publications by eminent scholars such as Elizabeth Cowling, Anne Baldassari, Michael Fitzgerald, Christina Lichtenstern, William Rubin, John Richardson and Werner Spies as well as a number of other seminal texts for both art historian and student.[1] Although much of Apollinaire’s poetic and literary work has now been published in French it remains largely untranslated, and Read’s scholarly deciphering using the original texts is astonishing, daring and enlightening to the Picasso scholar and reader of the French language.[2] Divided into three parts and progressing chronologically through Picasso’s art and friendship with Apollinaire, the first section astutely analyses the early years from first encounters, Picasso’s portraits of Apollinaire, shared literary and artistic interests, the birth of Cubism, the poet’s writings on the artist, sketches, poems and “primitive art,” World War I, through to the final months before Apollinaire’s death from influenza on 9 November 1918. -

©Hank Hine, 2015 Picasso, Dalí, and Apollinaire: A triangulation By Dr. Hank Hine © Salvador Dalí, Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí, Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York 2015 Dalí’s 1952 Portrait of Picasso in the 21st century, 1947, develops an iconography as complex as Dalí’s apparent relation to his subject, the Spanish artist 23 years his senior and his persistent referent as an artist and a Spaniard. This painting was loaned by the Fundació Gala Salvador Dalí and was displayed in the exhibition Picasso/Dalí, Dalí Picasso. As the painting’s title proposes Picasso’s countenance as it will appear in the future, an evolution of Picasso’s features is expected. In order to measure the extent of anticipated alteration in his portrait, we can examine the genesis of those changes in the face he presented to Dalí and to others in the era they shared. We desire to know who were these men who were shaped by similar currents and events and whose artistic responses were remarkably similar. The tide of modernism, the impact of Freud, Catalan language and Spanish identity, the wars and women, mark these artists equally. They each made allegorical responses to war. Yet the commerce between Picasso and Dalí was ardent and asymmetrical. Picasso generously provided Dalí and Gala passage to the United States in 1934. Picasso was already the leading avant-garde artist of his day when Dalí made his first trip out of Spain to meet the famous artist at his studio in 1926. There are stories of dinners in Paris. They shared friends, were photographed by the same photographers, and worked at times in the same idiom. -
Alcools , Une Sélection Concertée De Sa Production Poétique De 1898 À 1913
En avril 1913, Guillaume Apollinaire publie Alcools , une sélection concertée de sa production poétique de 1898 à 1913. Paru aux éditions Mercure de France à Paris en peu d’exemplaires, cette première version est caractérisée par l’illustration du frontispice réalisée par Pablo Picasso (cf. page précédente). La reliure est quant à elle plus tardive. Créée « à la manière » de Picasso par Micheline de Bellefroid, la couverture représente un portrait d’Apollinaire. GUILLAUME APOLLINAIRE Quelques repères biographiques Guillaume Apollinaire est l’un des principaux poètes français du début du XX e siècle. De son vrai nom Wilhelm Apollinaris de Kostrowitsky, il est d’origine polonaise et naît à Rome en 1880. Dès 1901, après ses études et alors qu’il travaille pour subvenir aux besoins de sa famille, il publie ses premiers poèmes. À la même époque, il est engagé comme précepteur dans une famille d’aristocrates allemande. Ce © Musée royal de Mariemont. séjour en Allemagne lui inspirera d’ailleurs certains poèmes, contes et articles dont il se servira par après en France. De retour à Paris en 1903, il devient rédacteur en chef de deux revues, Alcools parmi lesquelles le Festin d’Esope , dont il est l’un des fondateurs. Au de Guillaume Apollinaire même moment, tout en publiant d’autres poèmes, Apollinaire se lie d’amitié avec des hommes de lettres, tels que Max Jacob, et des artistes, 1913 tels que Pablo Picasso. Menant ainsi une double activité de critique d’art et de poète, Guillaume Apollinaire vit de sa plume et s’affirme comme un écrivain d’avant-garde. -

The Poetics of Visual Cubism: Guillaume Apollinaire on Pablo Picasso Abstract Guillaume Apollinaire, one of the most original poets of the early twentieth-century French avant garde, played a crucial role in the enunciation of modernist aesthetics. Through innovative poetic forms, Apollinaire set forth a new aesthetics which underscored the inherent ambiguity of an increasingly turbulent modern context. Apollinaire's interest in the pure dynamism of the contemporary material landscape, and his attraction to the image that explodes with immediate presence, also led him to a natural curiosity in the visual arts. Identifying with the Cubist mosaic style of inclusion, the juxtaposition of reality and imagination, and the simultaneity of spatial and temporal movement, Apollinaire saw modern artists as "singers of a constantly new truth," inventors of a uniquely authentic modern experience. -

The time span is restricted to the productive years 1896 to 1912. Apollinaire's poetic output after 1912 was quite extensive, its inclusion in the analysis would have resulted in an over-long thesis. Recent research as well as standard material which was found in scattered information has been combined in this analysis. The thesis is made up of an Introduction which sets forth the methodology of the analysis and discusses the content. The first chapter is a biography covering the entire life of the poet. -
