Art of Zen Buddhism Zen Buddhism, which stresses a connection to the spiritual rather than the physical, was very influential in the art of Kamakura Japan. Zen Calligraphy of the Kamakura Period Calligraphy by Musō Soseki (1275–1351, Japanese zen master, poet, and calligrapher. The characters "別無工夫 " ("no spiritual meaning") are written in a flowing, connected soshō style. A deepening pessimism resulting from the civil wars of 12th century Japan increased the appeal of the search for salvation. As a result Buddhism, including its Zen school, grew in popularity. Zen was not introduced as a separate school of Buddhism in Japan until the 12th century. The Kamakura period is widely regarded as a renaissance era in Japanese sculpture, spearheaded by the sculptors of the Buddhist Kei school. The Kamakura period witnessed the production of e- maki or painted hand scrolls, usually encompassing religious, historical, or illustrated novels, accomplished in the style of the earlier Heian period. Japanese calligraphy was influenced by, and influenced, Zen thought. Ji Branch of Pure Land Buddhism stressing the importance of reciting the name of Amida, nembutsu (念仏). Rinzai A school of Zen buddhism in Japan, based on sudden enlightenment though koans and for that reason also known as the "sudden school". Nichiren Sect Based on the Lotus Sutra, which teaches that all people have an innate Buddha nature and are therefore inherently capable of attaining enlightenment in their current form and present lifetime. The same might well be said of that anthology, Shōgaku Kokushishū 正覚国師集 (also known as Shōgaku Kokushi goei 正覚国師御詠; hereafter, SKS), an important collection that has yet to receive extended con- sideration in the context of the waka tradition. Despite its relatively small size at just 122 verses, SKS is nonetheless the larg- est collection of early waka written by a prominent Zen monk. Although Edo- period monks like Takuan Sōhō 沢庵宗彭 (1573-1645) and Hakuin Ekaku 白隠 慧鶴 (1685-1768) are known for having composed waka and many examples date from late Muromachi and Edo-period texts on Zen, considerably fewer verses are attributed to medieval Zen monks. This is unsurprising, considering that most poet-monks in the Zen tradition tended to compose mainly in Sino- Japanese in the generations after Musō for social, political, and diplomatic rea- sons. There were, of course, poets by trade who were also Zen monks, the most famous and prolific of whom was undoubtedly Shōtetsu 正徹 (1381-1459), whose personal anthology, Sōkonshū 草根集, numbers more than 11,000 verses. -

45 A Critique and Discussion of the View That Shi Miyuan Proposed the Five-Mountain, Ten-Monastery System LAN Jih-chang* Abstract When Japan, during the Kamakura (1180–1333) and Muromachi (1336–1573) periods, imported Zen 禪 Buddhism from Song (960–1279) and Yuan (1279– 1368) China, it not only continually dispatched Zen monks on pilgrimages to China to seek materials for transmitting sectarian doctrine, but also intro- duced Zen temple architecture and monastic discipline to Japan, established the Five Mountain, Ten Monastery 五山十剎 system of government temples, and developed Five Mountain 五山 literature. This system of government temples is believed to have imitated the Song system of government temples of the same name. Moreover, it is the best example of Sino-Japanese cultural interaction in the field of Buddhism. In contrast with the ample materials we have on the operation of the Japanese system of the Five Mountain, Ten Monastery government temples, we lack sufficient materials to determine the time and impetus of the Song system of Five Mountain, Ten Monastery government temples and are at a loss to give a detailed accurate account of the Song system. Among the many views in circulation, the view most accepted by modern scholars is that Shi Miyuan 史彌遠 proposed to the court to establish this system of government temples during the reign of Emperor Ningzong (r. 1194–1224) of the Southern Song dynasty. But this theory comes down to us from Song Lian 宋濂 (1310–1381) of the early Ming dynasty, and no Song or Yuan sources mention this matter. Moreover, no Japanese Five Mountain Zen monks touch on this matter in any of their writings. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Jagiellonian Univeristy Repository Agnieszka Kozyra Nishida Kitarō’s Logic of Absolutely Contradictory Identity and the Problem of Ethics in Zen Ethics is learning about the concept of good and principles in human behaviour; it is associated with the existence of moral standards. In the case of Zen, however, we cannot speak about ethics in the sense of some collection of precepts, which distinctly belong to this school. Can Zen ethics even be said to exist, since Zen masters advocate overcoming the duality of all opposites, including the opposition between good and evil? The answer to this question also seems not to be clear to some Zen practitioners, for instance in contemporary American Zen centers, where some masters have justified their blameworthy behaviour (drunkenness, seduction of female pupils) by claiming to be free from the concepts of 1 good and evil . Of course, such behaviour has been criticized not only by public opinion, but also by other Zen masters. In my opinion, Zen ethics should be treated as a part of philosophical reflections on the experience of Enlightenment. Such a statement brings us to the problem of Zen philosophy. In this article, I would like to present the analysis of Zen ethics from the point of view of Nishida Kitarō’s philosophy of ‘absolute nothingness’ (zettaimu ) and its logic of paradox, i.e. logic of absolute contradictory self- identity ( zettaimujunteki jikodōitsu no ronri ), which is, in my opinion, the 2 key to Zen master’s teaching and kōans .
