8 ON MONTAUK — SUMMER 2018 Editor's Letter

... the window is closing very, very fast.

Get out there... Summer won't wait.

July is upon us once again and let me remind you that this means summer is here. Yes, summer is already here. By the time you’re reading this there are probably 8 weeks of summer left, at best, maybe 11 if you count September. So all those outdoor plans and ideas you’ve been longing to embrace throughout the interminably long winter and spring…the window is closing very, very fast.

This seasonal vignette is a microcosm of our lives, isn’t it? We forget, I think, in the normal course of life, that the moments for which we wait, plan, and dream about won’t stop and wait for us once they arrive. Sobering. Our 9-week old boy has brought this reality home… we look at videos of our other two kids at that age and shed tears of nostalgia at the miracle, and brutal speed, of life.

So don’t take these fleeting weeks of summer for granted. Get that surfing lesson, finally take that trail hike, take a beach walk like you used to as a kid, finally take a sunset cruise… and don’t forget that even rainy weekends are good weekends in Montauk.

And since you are here in Montauk (or heading there), you’re already acting on your summer plans. Great, I hope you’ll find some new ideas by flipping through this summer edition of On Montauk. Be sure to read Bob Miller’s second piece this year about surfing etiquette. And please meet Kate Mueth of the oddly named Neo-Political Cowgirls (the name will make sense), another east ender who is larger than life and empowering those around her. Kate Usher and the Sturdy Souls are a dynamic duo padding Montauk’s already great music reputation. And we’re psyched to have such a great new eatery in Montauk that is a missing link in our food scene; you’ll be HOOKED.

Embrace your time in Montauk this summer. It’s not waiting for you. Fall is barreling down.

retend for a second that you could wander off the beach in P downtown Montauk and hit a casual, delicious eatery with a huge assortment of fresh, affordable seafood dishes that you could take out or enjoy at curbside tables with family and friends. This is now a culinary dream come true for so many of us thanks to the recent opening of “Hooked,” an expertly run eatery at 34 South Etna Avenue just a few blocks from the ocean dunes. It won't be hard to get “hooked” on their extensive menu of raw clams and Montauk Pearl oysters (from Montauk's own oyster farm), steamers, mussels, lobster salad rolls, fish tacos, soft shell crabs, raw tuna bowls, homemade chowders, and more.

On my recent lunch visit the place was bustling as Gillian and her staff ran around behind the counter in their “Hooked”, “Eat Like a Local” shirts. While my dining partner and I stood in line to order, we met Tess McNamara, of NYC, who was happily devouring an overstuffed lobster roll. “I have been following Brian Mooney since he managed and cooked at the Clam Bar in Nappeague,” she said. “I love his food, especially this lobster roll.”

We decided to sample some of their many seafood delights, starting with the rich and creamy Lobster Bisque and the spicy, creative “Kickin' Crab & Corn Chowder.” We then shared a large and hearty “Hooked House Salad,” which was a wonderful combination of fresh kale, quinoa, cranberries, cotija cheese and orange segments served with a tangy, cranberry citrus vinaigrette.

One of my favorites was the “Tuna Poke Bowl,” consisting of a generous portion of raw tuna marinated in a delicious Southwestern cilantro vinaigrette served over sliced pickled cucumber, shitake mushrooms, scallions, and Soba noodles. The Fish Tacos were anything but ordinary; two soft tacos filled with grilled Mahi Mahi and topped with

Combined with Kate’s bright personality and sultry voice, the Souls set themselves apart and make their sound and presence compelling. Kate favors indie-electronic music and says she was influenced by many different musicians, of which her favorite is Miley Cyrus. “I’ve always loved her ability to express herself freely on and off the stage.” Although they have toured and traveled throughout the world, Kevin and Kate both agree that their favorite place to perform and live is in Montauk because its natural beauty inspires their writing and performing. “Montauk is the most beautiful place,” says Kate. “No matter where I travel, I am always excited to come back to this special town.” Fishing, clamming, surfing, gardening and yoga are among their many Montauk pastimes. Kate and Kevin are working hard to build their fan base as they try to grow and expand beyond the local scene. With decades of experience under his belt, he’s imparting some important advice on how to keep it together on the water for On Montauk in 2018. In our spring issue he highlighted the importance of water safety and knowing your surrounding near/on the water (see his article at onmontauk.com). Here, for the summer issue, he tauks surfing etiquette. Read on and stay tuned for his next piece in the fall/winter edition. With Bob Miller So.... the story goes... after forty known, so I’m going to share. years of catching waves (that I can I’m going to write down those remember) I’ll share with you what unwritten rules of conduct, I’ve learned. “Share”, hmmm ... that courtesies, & customs, which is was my mantra a few years back, so not something new. Basically, do anything you have to get out of a surfers way that is riding, which brings us back again to our “safety tauk” from the spring On Montauk, & being aware of your surroundings. Next, good form in the ocean is to NEVER lose or throw your board. My lifeguard Capitan says, “back when there were no leashes, and if you couldn’t swim and you lost your board you died, so... that really cut down on the crowds quite a bit.” That makes for both good etiquette & good safety… HOLD ONTO YOUR BOARD. Are you seeing patterns of formality here, like WAIT YOUR TURN? So, who’s turn is it? The person waiting the longest, closest to the peak or furthest out, some would even say the first up, but it’s really about polite decorum & sharing. One last courtesy please, if I may...? SURF WITHIN YOUR ABILITY. As in if you’re learning, please stay clear of the main surf zone, again please, take the time to learn how to control your surf board away from the crowd. These are all ways to practice good surf etiquette, which again is defined as the customary code of polite behavior... so, please be aware of your surroundings, wait your turn, don’t drop in, don’t be a snake, and hold onto your boards.
