Mulled Wine, Coffee and Carols – will be held this year in the Village Hall on Thursday 14th December, starting at 7.00 pm. Boules – Many thanks to all who supported this event and made it such a success. Once again the weather was kind and it was a keenly fought competition and everyone enjoyed the afternoon, the barbecue and the cream teas and bar were also very popular. Over £300 was raised for the upkeep of your beautiful parish Church so once again very many thanks.

Mystery Donor – many thanks to the ‘mystery donor’ who leaves bags of towels or bedding on our doorstep for West Villa Homeless Families Unit. They are delighted to receive gifts like these and very grateful for people’s generosity.

Children’s Society Boxes – please will everyone who has a Children’s Society Box at home let Doreen have your box during November so that they can be emptied and the money sent to help children in need in this country. Doreen can be contacted on 311122.

Samaritans Purse Shoe Boxes – We will be supporting this charity again this year. For details please contact Doreen Savage on 01473 311122 if you would like to help by making up a shoebox of gifts for needy children, or giving items which can be used to fill such boxes. Many Thanks.

West Villa – we will be supporting the Homeless Families Unit again this year by collecting, hats, scarves, toiletries and other gifts suitable for Christmas so that even the homeless may have something to celebrate this Christmas. Unwrapped gifts of toys and books will also be collected at the Christingle Service. The people there really value the support they receive in this way.

Just a thought - Summer seems to have ended abruptly this year with chilly winds, torrential downpours and sunny spells. We may moan about our weather, but we are much more fortunate than many people across the world from Asia to America. We may have high winds but our homes are still standing, our streets are not flooded and we still have power. We really do have much to thank God for and perhaps try to reach out to those less fortunate.

Page 7 Bentley Bugle – Oct 2017 / Nov 2017 Bentley Parish Council respectfully reminds parishioners to check that their hedgerows and plants are not, inadvertently, obstructing or impeding pedestrian access along public footways or pavements. Council asks that any such growth (width and height) is cut back in order to avoid any unintentional accident or injury to pedestrians, cyclists or motor vehicles. If any parishioner is aware of a particular problem site, please notify the Clerk in order that appropriate action may be taken.

OVERGROWN FOOTPATHS It would be much appreciated if any overgrown footpaths could be reported to the Footpath Warden (Allan Cribb) or The Clerk.

BENTLEY PARISH COUNCIL - SEPTEMBER MEETING SUMMARY Eight Councillors attended the meeting on Thursday 6th September, (which was preceded by a meeting of the Playing Field Society). County Councillor Gordon Jones and District Councillor John Hinton presented their monthly reports. There was good news from Cllr. Jones who reported that A - Level and GCSE exam results across the county were generally up and above the national average. He gave an update on speed camera trials which are due to finish at the end of September. There are still some data handling and processing issues to be ironed out with the police before the scheme can be introduced. Cllr. Hinton reminded the meeting that thought should be given to how to commem- orate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, next year. Three planning decisions were announced and five planning applications were discussed including Marmley House, Highfields; Trevlac, Capel Road; Dingle Dell, Station Road; 17 Highfields and The Acorns, Link Lane. All five applications were supported. A discussion took place regarding the Boundary Commission Electoral Review of Warding Arrangements. It was decided to consult neighbouring wards before a decision was made on Bentley’s preferred option for change. Full draft minutes will be available on the Parish Council website www.bentleypc.onesuffolk.net.

Bentley Bugle – Oct 2017 / Nov 2017 Page 8 BENTLEY REFORMED BAPTIST CHURCH 'My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.' (Psalm 62:5) All are welcome to join with us Wednesday at 7.30 pm – Prayer and Bible Study Sunday at 10.45 am and 3.00 pm – Worship Services

Pause For Thought: I read a quote today that caused me to ‘pause for thought’. It went like this, ‘Remember, there are some people in this world who are so poor that all they have is money’. Jesus said, ‘Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also (Matthew 6:19-21). Heavenly riches may be ours by grace, through faith in the person and finished work of Jesus Christ. If we are fortunate, our earthly wealth may last us a lifetime. One day however, we shall have to leave it all behind. What riches may we take into eternity? Only the riches of Christ, which shall sustain the soul forever.

BENTLEY BOWLS CLUB.

The season is now finished, all too soon. We have finished 2nd bottom in the Samford League, division 1, so will probably go down. In the Triples League division 2 we came 4th, just three points behind the two teams ahead of us. We have been going up and down like a yo yo in the divisions in the past couple of years. Our finals day on Saturday 2nd September was well attended and with the weather being so good we had some excellent bowling from Martin Porter and Mark Boyland playing for the men's two wood trophy, Mark eventually ran out winner in a very close game. The four woods trophy was between Barry Ford and Gareth Robins, this was not such a close game, but some excellent bowling, with Gareth the winner. The green will be scarified and top dressed and put to bed for the winter at the end of September. Lillian Calvert Secretary 311756

What an exciting start to the new school year! Our topics are well under way already, including the Stone Age, All About Me and Africa. As ever, if you have any interesting artefacts that could help us in our projects, and you are happy for us to borrow them, we would love to hear from you. Years 5 and 6 are ever so excited about their upcoming residential trip to African Adventure. They will be taking part in exciting and challenging events throughout the course of the week and we can’t wait to hear all about their adventures. Online safety is an ever present concern for parents and schools and this term we are focussing on staying safe on the internet. We are being visited by the NSPCC who will be leading workshops with all the children, looking at how to keep safe and what to do if something goes wrong. There will also be a free workshop for parents / grandparents / carers to help adults understand the threats that are out there and how to support our children to keep themselves safe. The community are warmly invited to join us for our annual MacMillan Coffee and Cake fundraiser. This year we will be holding this event at 2:30pm, on Friday 29th September, and you are very welcome to attend. Please do come along to help raise money for this amazing charity. Finally, we are very pleased to welcome new children to our federation in both Reception and other year groups. The Bentley family looks forward to travelling on your learning journey with you. Noah, Sebastian, Mylie, Molly, Jacob, Malachi, Isobel, Joey, Dawson and Mason, we wish you a warm welcome and hope your time at Bentley is happy and successful! Open Evening at the school on Wednesday 8th November - if you have a child who is due to start school in September 2018 or you have moved into the area, please do come along, meet the teachers and see what a wonderful space to learn our school is.

BENTLEY FUN DAY Due to unforeseen circumstances, it has not been possible for the organisers of the Fun Day to submit a report this time, although it is hoped to have one in the next edition. The organisers would like to express their very sincere thanks to everyone who came to the event, and hope that they had a great time. They would also like to say a huge thank you to all those who ran, manned, assisted in any way, towards making the day such a success. The Editor

45 VILLAGE VOLUNTEERS WIN AWARD! Bentley’s award winning village store has another award to add to the collection. The village’s community store picked up the prestigious Community Building Award at the Community Action Suffolk Awards last month. The awards, supported by Birketts Solicitors, recognises those who have generously improved the quality of life for locals and for Suffolk, celebrating the dedication and community spirit in the county. Bentley Stores competed against a record number of nearly 100 organisations and volunteers were nominated, from Mildenhall to Felixstowe, Lowestoft to Haverhill, and included teenagers and octogenarians, community buildings and scouts groups. Bob Feltwell, and seven of the shop’s volunteers, received the award and a cheque for £100 at a special celebration event hosted by Community Action Suffolk at the Museum of East Anglian Life in last month. Following the presentation Bob said, “I am absolutely delighted that the Community Action Suffolk has recognised the dedication and commitment of our fantastic team of volunteers. The shop has made a huge difference to the community spirit in Bentley and I am sure it has improved the quality of life for many of our villagers. It is quite amazing how the shop has so quickly become a crucial part of the village. We are very grateful to our volunteers but we are equally grateful to the support we receive from the many customers who use the shop every day.” Pete Richardson, Chief Executive of CAS, said, “The Awards panel, as always, found it difficult to select winners from such a variety of inspiring community action. What excites me is the amount of work and volunteering taking place in Suffolk, we really do have some amazing projects on our doorsteps. Often this work goes unnoticed by many but without it, vulnerable people wouldn’t be given the support they need and communities wouldn’t be the social centres that they are.” He added, “The Bentley shop helps people with various physical disabilities and learning difficulties who now visit almost daily. Children are now sent out to buy bread and milk and learning about money. Volunteers collect people and bring them to the shop and help them find things which they are unable to do on their own due to frailty and failing eyesight. Some of the volunteers are in their 80’s and enjoy the social aspect of meeting people in the village, reducing rural isolation. The shop is bringing the local community to life.” The shop is conveniently positioned next to the Case is Altered pub and is open seven days a week - Monday to Friday 8.30am - 5.30pm and 8.30am - 12.Noon on Saturday and Sunday. There is ample parking - which is accessed via Case Lane.

Page 15 Bentley Bugle – Oct 2017 / Nov 2017 NOTES FROM THE CASE Suffolk’s first Co-operative Pub! Tel. 01473 805575 www.thecasepubbentley.co.uk OPEN MIC. Following the success of our first two Open Mic evenings, it is now a regular event. The next one will be on Tuesday 3rd October at 8pm – just come along and join in the music-making, whether as a performer or a spectator. LOCAL AUTHOR PRESENTS … Amateur historian and author Nicky Moxey will talk on Sunday 15th October from 7 – 8pm about her new book Sheriff and Priest, published this month. Set in the 12th century, it tells the story of Wimer, who, from lowly beginnings, rises to be High Sheriff of all Norfolk and Suffolk. A victim of the stormy relationship between Henry II and Thomas a Becket, he is excommunicated three times, and is guaranteed a place in hell unless he can redeem himself with a spectacular act of penance. But no more spoilers! Come along on 15th at 7.00 pm and hear Nicky talk about her book and the fascinating research that went into it. We guarantee you’ll learn something new about your local area and its history. GOODBYE TO JAY … We are sad to report that our chef Jay left us on 23rd September. She has been very much a part of our pub ‘family’ and we wish her every success in her future career. We will remember her Jay burgers with affection and respect! AND WELCOME TO BECKY! We are delighted to welcome as Chef Becky Stockdale, who many of you will already know and who has been a very able back-up – and stand-in – for Jay for some time now. We hope as many of you as possible will come along and give Becky your support by booking a meal. Watch out for updated menus on the pub web site. A CRAFT FAIR will be held in the pub on Sunday 26th November from 4.00 pm. Come along and solve some Christmas present problems

STAFFING A PUB is never easy and we are constantly looking for staff, both paid and volunteer. Although we are still working through the implications of staff changes, it’s likely we’ll need some extra paid support in the kitchen and at Front of House. If you’d be interested in working in these areas, we’d love to hear from you. Please drop a note into the pub, addressed to Kate Spicer, Chair of the Committee, giving your details, including a contact number or email.

JUST A REMINDER that our pub quizzes continue on 28th October and 25th November. Food available till 8.00 pm, quiz starts at 9.00 pm. For this and other meals, if you are a party of 5 or more, please book beforehand. If 8 or more, we will ask you to pre-order to ensure you get exactly what you want.

THEY MARRIED IN 1947 LIKE THE QUEEN

A Bentley man's wedding in Bentley Church preceded, by four months, that in Westminster Abbey of Princess Elizabeth (aged 21), heiress presumptive to the Throne, and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (26), son of Prince Andrew of Greece. The Villager concerned was Lionel Crown (36), who'd attended Bentley School and was living at Co-op (now Falstaff) Cottages and working as a "transport driver". His bride on 20th July 1947 was Gladys Stow (37), of Ipswich. Sadly nothing else is known of their wedding except that it began a childless marriage of nearly 36 years. However, their wedding was probably similar to that nearly two years later of Lionel's fifth and youngest sister, Daisy (1926-2008). In July 1949 she married Dennis Grimwood (born 1926), who retains memories of that day. The Bentley wedding, unsurprisingly, differed vastly from the Royal one. Guests came on foot, those from Ipswich travelling first to Bentley Station. A local taxi brought Daisy to the Church, a friend's car Dennis. As for the Royal wedding probably every guest was driven there. At the Bentley service Dennis remembers Daisy's dress as "white and trailing". The "East Anglian Daily Times" described Princess Elizabeth in the Abbey as being "in a mist of white satin spangled with pearls & crystals". She was attended by six bridesmaids, (two of them princesses) and two pages (both princes). Daisy had four bridesmaids, one a Bentley friend, Muriel Harvey (later Girling) (1926-2014). They heard singing by the Church Choir, taking part because Daisy was a member. The Royal Wedding, however, had the advantage of the Royal Military School of Music's fanfares and drum rolls as well as the Abbey Choir's singing. The Bentley wedding attracted many onlookers, for Daisy's large family had lived in the Village for 36 years. But thousands thronged the Royals' route between Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace and around the World millions (some perhaps in Bentley where the School closed for the day) crowded around radios. The Royal wedding's reception was held in Buckingham Palace; the Bentley one's in The Hut, then the Village Hall. After the receptions both couples honeymooned in southern , Dennis & Daisy for a week in a village near Swindon, the Royals for some weeks at Broadlands near Southampton, home of the Prince's uncle, Earl Mountbatten. 1952 was for both couples life-changing. Dennis & Daisy moved from Daisy's parents' by the School to their own home in Railway Cottages; Daisy gave birth to their daughter; & Dennis began working at Dodnash Fruit Farm. On 8th February following her father's death, Princess Elizabeth acceded to the Throne as Queen Elizabeth II, at 25 our youngest monarch since Queen Victoria in 1837. .John Tombs - Village Historian

Bentley Bugle – Oct 2017 / Nov 2017 Page 18 BENTLEY W.I. In August our garden party venue was moved to the Village Hall at the last minute, due to the weather. We all enjoyed our afternoon teas. The following month we had a talk by Mr Empson, medal collector and researcher. His talk told of the men of Ipswich who had received the Victoria Cross in the First World War. He brought along several medals for us to look at. He is also going to be on the Antiques Road Show which was filmed at Helmingham Hall. The WI also supported the Village Fun Day and ran the refreshment stall, supplying teas, coffees and cakes. Many thanks to all those secret future bake off contestants, hiding in the village. The next meetings will be: October 11th Wood carving November 8th Old sayings and their origins

Page 19 Bentley Bugle – Oct 2017 / Nov 2017 BENTLEY COMRADES For the August meeting Craig Barker gave us an illustrated talk entitled The Aces of WW 2. This featured the aces of various countries who achieved the highest number of ‘kills’ by fighters, submarines and tanks etc. This included some of the 1874 pilots of World War 2 with more than 5 kills and the submarine and tank commanders with 5 or more kills. Of particular note was a tank commander credited with a submarine amongst his tally. For September we had a film entitled The Heroes of Biggin Hill that described with personal accounts how the Battle of Britain was endured in 1940. This was followed by a short film in Chris Barrie’s Massive Speed series and featured attack helicopters. The film show concluded with an episode of ‘Allo, ‘Allo – Who’s for the Vatican? During other business we dealt with the forthcoming visit to Orford Ness, the Christmas lunch arrangements and the wreath for Remembrance Sunday. Bentley Comrades is a gathering of ex-service personnel and those interested in the British Armed Forces. We usually meet on the first Wednesday of each month in the Village Hall Committee Room, supply our own refreshments and each make a contribution towards the hire of the hall. BOOK LAUNCH The Case is Altered, Bentley: Sunday 15th October, 7.00-8.00 pm

Sleepy little Dodnash Priory was founded in 1188 by a man who resigned one of the most powerful jobs in England to build it. How did this local Saxon boy rise to hold the post of Sheriff of all Norfolk and Suffolk, a level of post normally reserved for the Norman elite? How did he survive being excommunicated not once, not twice, but three times by Archbishop Thomas a'Beckett? Why did the King's mistress gift him the large estate needed to found a Priory? Local amateur historian Nicky Moxey has woven his story together in a compelling new novel, Sheriff and Priest. Come to the Case is Altered on Sunday 15th October for an evening of history, mystery, and readings, and to hear the author talk about her writing process. No tickets necessary; signed books available to buy. Nicky Moxey

Bentley Bugle – Oct 2017 / Nov 2017 Page 20 TUESDAY CLUB At our first meeting in August, David Healey made a return visit to us with an illustrated talk on his holiday in Bulgaria detailing the flora and fauna of this Country. Later in the month we welcomed Barbara Faulkner whose talk was entitled `Love That Hat`. This was a fascinating subject outlining the history of millinery which she illustrated with her collection of hats from Victorian Times to the present with four of our members acting as models. We had a full coach of members and friends for our annual outing in Septem- ber when we enjoyed a `fish and chip` lunch at the Flora Tea Rooms at Dunwich. We visited Southwold on our return when members enjoyed the bracing air on the Pier and Promenade. The month concluded with our two monthly session of `Chair Aerobics` and a visit by the `Coffee Caravan`. The October and November meetings are listed under the Parish Diary at the front of the Bugle – do come and join us at one of these meetings. Please note that as from the 31st October, our meetings will commence at 2.00 p.m. for the duration of the winter months. Margaret Blackmore - Secretary, Tel: 310655

We have now completed our Summer League fixtures. Against a very good Copdock side we lost 2-8. The matches against Stutton & Brantham away saw us lose 0-10 & 2-8 but in the reverse fixtures at home we played superbly to win both 10-0. Therefore we achieved fifth place in the league which was our highest position for some years. Thanks must go to our Summer League Captain Deirdre Rose, & Vice Captain Pam Rayment for all their hard work and to all members for their support during the season. We now look forward to the Winter League which starts in October. David Howe

Bentley Bugle – Oct 2017 / Nov 2017 Page 22 CONSTABLE COUNTRY MEDICAL PRACTICE – PRACTICE UPDATE Dementia Dementia is a condition that can have a devastating impact on patients, their family and friends. However, the earlier it is identified, the more likely it is that the patient will retain a good quality of life and their dignity. The practice has one of the lowest levels of dementia diagnosis across Suffolk. Although we would like to think this really is the case, we suspect the truth is that many patients suffering from dementia have not been formally diagnosed and therefore are not receiving the support and care they need. If you suspect a friend or family member may be suffering from dementia, please persuade them to make an appointment with a GP. A quick assessment at the practice may suggest dementia, in which case they will be referred to the Hospital for a comprehensive assessment, or their symptoms may be attributable to another cause. For more information on dementia, visit www.dementiauk.org or www.alzheimers.org.uk. Dr Fayez Ayache After over 30 years as a GP at the practice Dr Ayache, our senior GP Partner, has decided to retire. He has been a steadying influence on the practice and been crucial in steering us through difficult times over the last few of years. Dr Ayache has earned the respect of not just patients and staff, but the health community in general across Suffolk and further afield. As an ENT specialist GP he has worked in the community at Hadleigh as well as at Ipswich Hospital. However, his biggest challenge has been supporting those in desperate need as a result of the conflict in his country of birth, Syria. He has been frequently interviewed by the media and has been a key supporter of a charity set up to help Syrian refugees. He will continue this work when he leaves the practice at the end of December. Dr Ayache has endeavoured to give all his patients the best care possible and would like to thank them all for their kindness and support over the years. Annual Flu Clinics We are starting to prepare for our annual flu clinics. This year we will be administering a quadrivalent influenza vaccine to patients over 18. Previously, the majority of seasonal influenza vaccines were trivalent meaning that they protect against three of the four main flu virus strains. If the strain not covered turns out to be predominant then the vaccine is less effective. The new quadrivalent vaccine protects against all four strains and so will be effective irrespective of which strains are predominant in any one year. The vaccine is administered exactly the same as in previous years so patients will not experience any difference. The practice sources the quadrivalent vaccine from Sanofi Pasteur, one of the largest and most respected vaccine manufacturers in the world. Our aim is to vaccinate as many patients as possible and start the vaccination programme as soon as we take delivery of the vaccines. This year we will be holding additional flu clinics at the end of October, though we urge all eligible patients to attend our main flu clinics on the following dates. East Bergholt Medical Centre: Tuesday 26th September, 2.00 pm to 7.00 pm (Patients aged 18 year and over) Capel St Mary Surgery: Thursday 5th October, 2.00 pm to 7.00 pm (Children and Adults) Additional flu clinics will be held on the following dates: East Bergholt Medical Centre: Thursday 26th October, 3.00 pm to 6.00 pm (Children and Adults) Continued on page 24………..

Page 23 Bentley Bugle – Oct 2017 / Nov 2017 ……….Continued from page 23 Capel St Mary Surgery: Tuesday 31st October, 3.00 pm to 6.00 pm (Children and Adults) The clinics will run on the same basis as previously: all eligible patients will receive a letter by mid-September inviting them to attend on one of the above days. Patients may attend any clinic, irrespective of where they live, and no appointment is needed. Training Days Just a reminder that the practice will be closed from 1.00 pm on the following dates for staff training: 4th October 2017 (Wed); 16th November 2017 (Thurs) On these afternoons the doors will be closed so please ensure any prescriptions are picked up well beforehand. If you phone the practice the recorded message will ask you to ring 111 for medical assistance if your problem cannot wait until the next day. Pete Keeble, Practice Manager
