This matrix appears in the Appendix. An IC is a tool that identifies and describes the major components of a practice or innovation. With the implementation of any innovation comes a continuum of configurations of implementation from non-use to the ideal. ICs are organized around two dimensions: essential components and degree of implementation (G. E. Hall & Hord, 1987; Roy & Hord, 2004). Essential components of the IC—along with descriptors and examples to guide application of the criteria to course work, standards, and classroom practices—are listed in the rows of the far left column of the matrix. Several levels of implementation are defined in the top row of the matrix. For example, no mention of the essential component is the lowest level of implementation and would receive a score of zero. Increasing levels of implementation receive progressively higher scores. ICs have been used in the development and implementation of educational innovations for at least 30 years (G. E. Hall & Hord, 2001; G. E. Hall, Loucks, Rutherford, & Newton, 1975; Hord, Rutherford, Huling-Austin, & Hall, 1987; Roy & Hord, 2004). Experts studying educational change in a national research center originally developed these tools, which are used for professional development (PD) in the Concerns-Based Adoption Model (CBAM). The tools have also been used for program evaluation (G. E. Hall & Hord, 2001; Roy & Hord, 2004). Use of this tool to evaluate course syllabi can help teacher preparation leaders ensure that they emphasize proactive, preventative approaches instead of exclusive reliance on behavior reduction strategies. The IC included in the Appendix of this paper is designed for teacher preparation programs, although it can be modified as an observation tool for PD purposes. The Collaboration for Effective Educator, Development, Accountability, and Reform (CEEDAR) Center ICs are extensions of the seven ICs originally created by the National Comprehensive Center for Teacher Quality (NCCTQ). NCCTQ professionals wrote the above description. Page 5 of 86 Individuals with moderate and severe developmental disabilities have been offered some of the most rapidly evolving educational services since students with disabilities were first guaranteed a free appropriate public education in 1975 (under PL 94-142). Although schools were not required to provide services prior to the 1970s, schools now must be accountable for ensuring that all students, including those with severe disabilities, make adequate yearly progress. For students to make adequate progress, teachers need access to the most effective instructional procedures available. Fortunately, research on how to teach students with severe disabilities has also rapidly evolved in the past 40 years. Our purpose for this IC was to summarize current, high-quality research on teaching students with severe disabilities. Methodology Terminology Before describing these practices, it is important to clarify the population of focus. The term significant cognitive disabilities was introduced with the 1997 Amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, 2004) to refer to the disabilities of students who needed an alternate assessment to participate in the states’ assessment systems. The term was retained in the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB, 2008) and the reauthorization of IDEA (2004) to refer to this assessment group. In contrast, the term is not categorized as a disability category in IDEA. The term intellectual disability has now replaced mental retardation in IDEA. Handleman (1986) proposed the term severe developmental disabilities as an umbrella term to refer to the disabilities of individuals with autism, severe intellectual disabilities, and multiple disabilities. A developmental disability is one that (a) is manifested before the age of 22, (b) is chronic and severe, (c) can be attributed to a mental or physical impairment or both, (d) results in substantial functional limitations in major life activities, and (e) requires a lifelong Page 6 of 86 need for special services that are individually planned and coordinated (Handleman, 1986). Plan to provide an opportunity for a patron or visitor with a disability to request the auxiliary aid or service that suits their needs. For example, not all persons who are blind use Braille as their primary form of communication. Curry Texas Tech University Color impacts student behavior within the physical learning environment. Due to the move toward including students with disabilities in the general education classroom, functional color applications are critical. This article reviews and analyzes existing literature and empirical evidence related to use of color in the classroom for students of all abilities. The three major areas reviewed were (1) the inclusive classroom for students with disabilities, (2) color theory, and (3) the physiological and psychological aspects of color. The results show that color is important in designing functional learning spaces. The results of this analysis may benefit educators, parents, and design professionals in designing beneficial learning environments for all students. Color is a powerful design element that produces profound psychological and physiological reactions. Studies have shown a relationship between color preferences, emotions, and academic performance in students (Boyatzis & Varghese, 1993; Imhof, 2004; Karp & Karp, 2001; O’Connor, Sofo, Kendall, & Olson, 1990; Terwogt & Hoeksma, 2001; Wilkins, 2003). The inclusion of learners with disabilities in the general education classroom creates additional challenges for learning and behavior. Federal law requires that children be educated in the least restrictive environment (LRE). The LRE is the requirement that special education students be educated with children without disabilities in the regular educational environment to the maximum extent appropriate to serve their needs. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 2004 addresses the legal rights of students with disabilities.

    CHAPTER-4 Physical Education and Sports for CWSN (Children with Special Needs) 4.1 AIMS & OBJECTIVES OF ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION Adapted Physical Education is a science of developing, implementing, and monitoring a designed physical education instructional programme for an individual with a disability, based on a comprehensive assessment, to give the learner the skills necessary for a lifetime of rich recreation, leisure and sport experiences to increase physical fitness and wellness. Adapted physical education is physical education that is individualized and specially designed to address the needs of students with disabilities who require adaptations or modifications to be physically active, participate safely, and make progress toward the standards for Health, Safety, and Physical Education. In simple words, we can say the physical education program designed for individuals with disabilities is called adapted physical education. The program is adapted to meet the needs of each student through modifications and accommodations. According to Auxter, D., Pyfer, J. & Huettig, C. “ Adapted physical education is the art and science of developing and implementing a carefully designed physical education instructional program for an individual with a disability, based on a comprehensive assessment, to give the individual the skills necessary for a lifetime of rich leisure, recreation, and sport experiences”. Adapted physical education is used to emphasise the importance of understanding the scientific bases of human development as it bring into relations to teaching appropriate concepts and practices in the adapted physical education program which will serve to maximize the quality of life among individuals with disabilities. Adapted physical education is clear that practices that influencing exercise, fitness, diet and nutritional status can significantly impact the quality and duration of life of an individuals with disabilities.
