    Introduction Ten years is a pretty worthy kind of anniversary to celebrate. It hasn't been ten years since Interfilk was first thought of that's even longer. And it hasn't been ten years since Interfilk came into existence — also longer. But it has been ten years since the very first Interfilk guest, Mike Whitaker, was sent to a convention. That convention was Consonance in 1992. Now, for the release of this songbook we travel ten years in time to Consonance 2002, and celebrate ten full years of raising funds, finding and selecting worthy guests, and arranging for them to go to a fill( convention far from their home. It hardly seems possible that so much has happened. rmi The first few years were lean ones, with Interfilk having only sufficient funds to send one or two guests a year. Does anyone recollect when Interfilk became an accepted part of the filk community and Interfilk auctions became an event to not miss? I remember when it happened at FilKONtario: It was 1993 and Michael Longcor took on the job of auctioneer with Mary Ellen Wessels ad libbing the role of auction wench. None of the auctions were tame after that. We're certainly glad you enjoy them. Interfilk is absolutely dependant on the generosity of the filk community for survival. The conventions have been incredibly cooperative, giving us table space and program time to run our little auction. They have taken our Interfilk guests to heart and treated them royally. We've had so much help at these events, with folks like Steve Simmons, Bill Roper, John Hall, Mark Bernstein, Michael Longcor, Nick Smith and our own Bill Sutton lending their talents at the auctioneer's position.

Story as Song: Filking Children's Literature Doug Crane ! It is midnight at your local science fiction convention. The daily programming and contests have ended. Most of the delegates, costumed or casual, have retired to their hotel rooms or begun the long drive home. Although the hotel lobby is deserted, a faint wave of music floats through the air -- not the electronically-piped Muzak supplied by the hotel, but the gentle strum of a guitar accompanying a soprano voice. The source of this melody is a wide meeting room in a forgotten corner of the hotel. It is midnight and the filking has begun. Filk is a form of folk music unique to the science fiction/fantasy community. It is a music largely inspired by books, movies, television shows, and comics. Mirroring its broad speculative sources, the styles range from original work to parody to ballads to parody of parody. The musicians themselves are an equally diverse group, composed of talented amateurs, struggling professionals, and those who simply enjoy listening to these unique songs. Born on the convention circuit during the fifties, the first musicians were an eclectic group of delegates from diverse locales. They gathered in the late evening after the regular convention programming was complete, since this was often the only time they could reserve an empty room. Bouncing from person to person, the music would carry on until sunrise as people sang, exchanged lyrics, and offered up stories and anecdotes to their friends and fellows.

(8) Water activities help remove metabolic waste, improve cardiac function, lower blood pressure, and encourage healing. (9) Aquajogging is good for runners with a myriad of conditions. (10) People with stress fractures, bunions, shin splints, arthritis, bum knees, and other physical problems can easily run in water. (11) This exercise is also good for pregnant women. (12) As the fetus grows, the gravitational pull on land increases and causes pregnant women to strain their back and joints. (13) In water, a person supports only half of his or her weight, which is a huge gravitational relief. (14) This exercise eliminates impact, and this is especially helpful for expectent women who are not used to carrying a baby's weight.     by Lee Gold, Copyright March, 1997 This essay originally appeared in the ConChord 12 Songbook. I found organized SF fandom in 1967 at Westercon XX. Filksinging was a two hour afternoon program item, with Bruce Pelz and Ted Johnstone singing out of Pelz's FILKSONG MANUALS (recently republished in a one-volume version, $13 including shipping and handling; Also available from Lee Gold. Bruce and Ted sat at a table in the front of the room, with Ted playing guitar. They chose what songs to sing, and audience members sang along if they felt like it. There were songs from John Myers Myers' Silverlock set to music and "The Orcs Marching Song" to the tune of "The Ballad of Jesse James" and Tom Digby's "Little Teeny Eyes" about a very strange computer -- and many, many others. A month later I attended my first LASFS meeting with copies for sale of THE THIRD FOUNDATION #76 (the fanzine's first issue), containing my first filksong: "Oh, What a Beautiful Martian." One of the LASFSians who sang it that night was a fellow named Barry Gold, whom I married two years later. In turn, I bought Pelz's first three Filksong Manuals (published for the 1965, 1966 and 1967 Westercons). A couple of years later, I bought his fourth Filksong Manual -- and also an old fanzine, THE STF & FSY SONGBOOK, edited by Hal Shapiro, dated 2060 (which Pelz informed me had been brought out for the 1960 Worldcon). A few years after that, Ted Johnstone sold me a copy of WEST BY ONE AND BY ONE, an anthology of Baker Street Irregular pieces published by Poul Anderson in 1961.

    Code of Conduct Introduction The primary purpose of the convention is for our attendees to have fun. To ensure that the greatest number of people do so, we have established certain FilKONtario 25 rules of conduct. By them we seek only to ensure that the behaviour of any individual or small group does not disturb the membership as a whole, nor and the does it detract from the relaxed and comfortable atmosphere of the convention. As a condition of membership, all FilKONtario attendees are required to abide 21st Annual by these standards of conduct for the entire duration of their stay, even prior to Opening or after Closing Ceremonies. Filk Hall of Fame Harassment Inductions FilKONtario is committed to being a safe place that is as free from harassment as we can make it for members. Harassment in any form is not tolerated.
