Even though the Secret Snowflake Exploring The Shortcomings of our Holiday Traditions program strives to spread cheer throughout the entire campus, there are unfortunately By: Katia Campos '22 situations With Thanksgiving long since passed, I think it?s safe to COTD. on Page 2 say that winter is approaching. With winter comes the joyous holiday of Christmas. We at FCS have a special way to show our school spirit and love for the holiday... a little something called ?Secret Snowflake? (though many still call it "Secret Santa"). For those of you that are unaware of what Secret Snowflake is, it?s an annual tradition in which the Student Council randomly assigns each upper school student and teacher a fellow classmate or colleague to purchase a small treat for right before Christmas. In the past, the Student Council has suggested that nobody spend more that $5 on a gift. According to Student Council Vice President McKenna Blinman ?19, the event has been arranged for many years. ?We continue this [tradition] because it is a relatively easy way to spread holiday cheer and show others in the community how much you care about them,? says McKenna. She continues, ?the joy of getting a gift from someone but not knowing who it is, [and] seeing the work they put into sharing a little happiness [is] unbeatable. Witnessing your person?s joy as they open their present from you might be even more gratifying than getting a gift.? McKenna ends her interview by saying, ?the event is really about spreading happiness and holiday cheer around our campus, and In This Issue: Quaker ism + Spor ts? • Introduction ROBERT AUNGER a Number of Prominent Academics
CHAPTER 1: Introduction ROBERT AUNGER A number of prominent academics have recently argued that we are entering a period in which evolutionary theory is being applied to every conceivable domain of inquiry. Witness the development of fields such as evolutionary ecology (Krebs and Davies 1997), evolutionary economics (Nelson and Winter 1982), evolutionary psychology (Barkow et al. 1992), evolutionary linguistics (Pinker 1994) and literary theory (Carroll 1995), evolutionary epistemology (Callebaut and Pinxten 1987), evolutionary computational science (Koza 1992), evolutionary medicine (Nesse and Williams 1994) and psychiatry (McGuire and Troisi 1998) -- even evolutionary chemistry (Wilson and Czarnik 1997) and evolutionary physics (Smolin 1997). Such developments certainly suggest that Darwin’s legacy continues to grow. The new millennium can therefore be called the Age of Universal Darwinism (Dennett 1995; Cziko 1995). What unifies these approaches? Dan Dennett (1995) has argued that Darwin’s “dangerous idea” is an abstract algorithm, often called the “replicator dynamic.” This dynamic consists of repeated iterations of selection from among randomly mutating replicators. Replicators, in turn, are units of information with the ability to reproduce themselves using resources from some material substrate. Couched in these terms, the evolutionary process is obviously quite general. for example, the replicator dynamic, when played out on biological material such as DNA, is called natural selection. But Dennett suggests there are essentially no limits to the phenomena which can be treated using this algorithm, although there will be variation in the degree to which such treatment leads to productive insights. The primary hold-out from “evolutionarization,” it seems, is the social sciences. Twenty-five years have now passed since the biologist Richard Dawkins introduced the notion of a meme, or an idea that becomes commonly shared through social transmission, into the scholastic lexicon.

The Role of the Online News Media in Reporting ISIS Terrorist Attacks in Europe (2014-present): the Case of BBC Online Agne Vaitekenaite A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the Master of Arts in International Journalism COMM5600 Dissertation and Research Methods School of Media and Communication University of Leeds 29 August 2018 Word count: 14,955 ABSTRACT The numbers of ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) terrorist attacks have risen in Europe since 2014. Consequently, these incidents have particularly attracted the media attention and received a great amount of news coverage. The study has examined the role of that the online news media in reporting ISIS terrorist attacks during the period between 2014-present, based on the fact, that the online news has overtaken the print media and the television as the most popular source of the news within the last few years (Newman et al., 2018). Hence, this allows it to reach and affect the highest numbers of audience. The research has focused on the case study of the British Broadcasting Corporation news website BBC Online coverage on the Manchester Arena bombing, which was caused by ISIS. The study has investigated the news coverage throughout 29 weeks since the date of the terrorist attack, what includes the period between the 22nd May 2017 and the 11th December 2017. This time slot has provided the qualitative study with 155 articles, what were analysed while conducting the thematic analysis. The findings indicated that some themes are dominant in the content of the online news media coverage on ISIS terrorist attacks.

Review A Review of Damage, Void Evolution, and Fatigue Life Prediction Models Hsiao Wei Lee and Cemal Basaran * Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, University at Buffalo, New York, NY 14260-4300, USA; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +1-(716)-645-4375 Abstract: Degradation, damage evolution, and fatigue models in the literature for various engineer- ing materials, mostly metals and composites, are reviewed. For empirical models established under the framework of Newtonian mechanics, Gurson–Tvergaard–Needleman (GTN) type model, John- son-Cook (J-C) type damage model, microplasticity model, some other micro-mechanism based damage models, and models using irreversible entropy as a metric with an empirical evolution function are thoroughly discussed. For Physics-based models, the development and applications of unified mechanics theory is reviewed. Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context.

DESOLATION BLUES: THE GOTHIC TRESPASS IN THE LIFE AND SONGWRITING OF TENNESSEE BLUES MUSICIAN RAY CASHMAN Victor Bouvéron A thesis submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Folklore in the American Studies Department. Chapel Hill 2017 Approved by: William Ferris Glenn Hinson Crystal O’Leary-Davidson © 2017 Victor Bouvéron ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Victor Bouvéron: Desolation blues: The Gothic trespass in the life and songwriting of Tennessee blues musician Ray Cashman (Under the direction of William Ferris) This thesis explores the pervading feeling of the Gothic in the life and songwriting of Tennessee blues musician Ray Cashman. I argue that Cashman emotionally responds to the South through the framework of the Gothic to assert his identity as a white southern working- class male. As a reader, writer and performer, he trespasses the lines of race and class. The ethnographic fieldwork I conducted in Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina between 2015 and 2017 led me to reflect on the intriguing relationship between blues, southern Gothic literature and white working-class culture in the South. The songs written by Cashman often express a feeling of desolation, bleakness and decay, invoke a sense of nostalgia for a bygone time, or describe eerie landscapes and supernatural presences. Cashman also retells southern Gothic stories, like “Snake Feast,” inspired by Harry Crews’s A Feast of Snakes. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This project started the day I met Bill Ferris in Lille, France, in 2013. Bill encouraged me to apply to UNC-Chapel Hill and introduced me to the field of folklore.

  • Students Scream for Fro-Yo by LINDEN FIGGIE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF with an Explosion of Color and Flavor, the Frozen Yogurt Craze Has Hit Orange City
Volume 85 - Issue 5 October 5, 2012 Students scream for fro-yo BY LINDEN FIGGIE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF With an explosion of color and flavor, the frozen yogurt craze has hit Orange City. De Zoete Winkel, Dutch for “The Sweet Shop,” is anything but subtle as it boasts electric blue and cotton-candy pink walls. A ‘50s theme was owners Neel and Melissa Johnsen’s original design idea. “I love old drive-in movies,” Neel said. “I just like the ‘50s.” It’s bright retro meets futuristic Candyland. With colorful spirals, old records adorning the walls and a large mural of a ‘50s drive-in, the Johnsens took the theme seriously. “We did a bit of homework on that,” Johnsen said of the color selection and design pieces. Whether sitting on the comfy couches, chrome and white four-person tables or high barstools, the atmosphere is cozy and eclectic. Soon the shop will add a jukebox to give an even more authentic feel. Six large, self-serve machines line the back walls and provide a wide variety of flavor options including fruity pomegranate and mango; creamy cheesecake and cookies ‘n cream; and chocolate and mocha, along with many others. The pomegranate energy/vitamin boost is “Red Bull in yogurt form,” according to Neel. “That’s for the college kids; it’s full of energy and caffeine.” After filling their cups with any number of yogurt flavors, customers have numerous topping choices. From wall-mounted pulleys to a complete treat bar, customers can choose any amount of additions. Pineapple, kiwi and berries; cookie dough, brownie and cheesecake bits; candy PHOTO BY EMILEE BERRY pieces and a variety of sauces: the possibilities abound.
