OUR MISSION: To Develop and Promote Rowing In Queensland The focus of Rowing Queensland’s Strategic Management Plan is to develop the capacity and capability and promote rowing in Queensland.There are six strategic priorities which we have pursued to achieve our mission: 1. Athlete High Performance - Creating the opportunity for those with the desire and talent to access the pathway to State and National Representation 2. Coaching Performance Development - Enable all participants to receive the coaching they need to perform at their optimum level 3. Improving the visibility of Rowing - Enhance & sustain the desired positioning of Rowing Queensland & its brands 4. Exchange Value with Sponsors and Government - Increase financial resources to underwrite the growth and future success of all levels of rowing and maximise the benefits realised from government and commercial rowing partnerships 5. Organisational Effectiveness - Provide sound leadership & equitable support to all stakeholders of Rowing Queensland 6. The business of Rowing Queensland Inc is managed by or under the direction of the Board of Rowing Queensland. The Directors may exercise all the powers of the Company, except any power the Corporations Act or the Rules requires the Company to exercise in a general meeting of members. The Board is responsible for the appointment of the Chief Executive Officer to do all things necessary for the proper management and administration of the organization. The CEO is ultimately accountable to the Board of Rowing Queensland Inc. however the CEO is accountable to the Chairman on day-to-day basis. The Board meets monthly, comprising of 6 Directors elected by the members of Rowing Queensland for two year terms. Rowing Queensland Inc. Directors throughout 2008: Dr. STEVE HINCHY OAM (Chairman – until Aug 2008) Steve has been involved in rowing in one form or another since 1956 firstly as an athlete then as administrator and Boat Race Official, Steve is a Life Member of the Commercial Rowing Club, Rowing Queensland and Rowing Australia. As a former President of Rowing Australia from 1996 to 2000 inclusive he has been a team doctor or team manager in Australian Rowing Teams for 15 years. Steve is also RQ's Councillor to Rowing Australia. Attended 8 of 8 meetings PETER SCHRYVER (Vice-Chairman. Chairman from Sept 2008) Peter is a pilot for Qantas Airways. He has been involved in rowing since 1990 and has rowed across regional Queensland for many years and moved back to Brisbane in 2006. Peter also represents our interests on the Australian Masters Commission. Peter has a background in human resources and has been instrumental in placing many of the current staff at Rowing Queensland in their positions. He has participated in many roles at RQI over the years including Team Manager. Attended 12 of 12 meetings MICHAEL SPARKSMAN Michael is the founding President of the Tattersall’s Rowing Club and a member of the Board of RQI since March 2006. He is the Managing Partner of Clarkekann Lawyers, General Council – Legal and Regulatory for OPENetworks and a Director of Right ICT. Michael is a level 2 Rowing Coach and has been involved in rowing since 1972. Michael was appointed to the Board of Rowing Australia and consequently retired from the Board of Rowing Queensland in November 2008. Attended 10 of 11 meetings ADRIAN HOWARD Adrian is a Senior Associate and client relationship manager for SKM, one of Australia's leading consultancy firms. Adrian was elected to the Board after the 2007 AGM attending his first meeting in April 2007 and has brought his engineering skills and corporate linkages to the Directorship over facilities management. Adrian is a competitive Masters athlete within the sport. Attended 10 of 12 meetings 5 HARDY CUBASCH Hardy is one of Queensland’s most experienced athletes having been a state, national and world champion. He is a current member of the Kings Cup VIII and is also the President of the University of Queensland Boat Club. Hardys’ term on the Board of Rowing Queensland expired in March and is presently rowing for Cambridge, UK Attended 3 of 3 meetings BARNABY EATON Barnaby is an experienced rowing coach and administrator with skills in strategic planning, program evaluation, coach education and event management. Barnaby has experience at all levels of rowing from Novice and School rowing right through to Elite Competition. He has also competed recently in Masters Competition including the Australian Masters Championships in 2007. Barnaby came onto the Board of Rowing Queensland in April. Attended 9 of 9 meetings Robert Alexander (Regatta Secretary) Robert has been involved in rowing in one form or another since 1961, where he commenced his rowing career at The Southport School. Bob has represented Queensland in the Kings and Presidents Cup on several occasions, as well as a Masters competitor in more recent times. Bob has been the organisation’s Regatta Secretary since 1987. The regatta secretary attends meeting of the Board however does not have any voting privileges. Attended 11 of 12 meetings DEBORAH SANDFORD Deborah was co-founder of one of Queensland’s leading public relations companies. Since retiring she formed her own consultancy, specialising in property and health care. She is foundation Member and President of River City Women’s Rowing Club. Deborah has extensive high-level public relations experience with the government and corporate sectors. Attended 11 of 12 meetings TIM CONRAD A 1976 Olympic rower, Tim is one of Queensland’s most experienced coaches having coached a number of state and national champions. Tim is the Queensland Academy of Sports Head Coach – Rowing working with Queensland’s elite rowers. Tim recently coached the Australian Men’s Four to a Silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Tim came onto the Board of Rowing Queensland in November. Attended 1 of 2 meetings 6 The Staff of Rowing Queensland Inc. CHRISTIAN RENFORD Christian has been Rowing Queensland’s Chief Executive Officer since September 2006. Formerly the General Manager of Sport for Surf Life Saving Australia, Christian has and prominent background in sport administration and sporting event management as well as extensive corporate event management experience in the United Kingdom and Europe. Coupled with his Bachelor of Social Science (Sport) Christian recently completed a Masters of Business Administration. CAMERON ALLEN (from October) Cameron has been the RQ Operations and Events Manger since late October 2008. Cameron is a former rower from the Rockhampton Grammar School and Emmanuel College, and coaches College and corporate rowing through UQBC. Cameron joined the Rowing Queensland family from the ‘Gabba where he worked in the Event Management Department, and recently graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Arts (Sports Studies). ADRIENNE POLLOCK (until October) As the Organisation’s Operations and Events Manager, Adrienne came to us from an Accounting and Administration background and has been studying at UQ for her Bachelor of Business in Event and Sport Management. Adrienne left Rowing Queensland to take up further studies at University. PETER SHAKESPEAR Peter joined Rowing Queensland in December 2007 as High Performance Manager. He has returned to Queensland after 6 years as Performance Development Manager for GB Rowing where he established World Class Start, identifying and developing several World Senior and U23 Champions. Peter has coached internationally at all levels from Junior to the Olympics and rowed in two Olympics for Australia SAMUEL PICKETT Samuel’s appointment as Rowing Queensland’s Development Manager comes at the completion of his post graduate scholarship in biomechanics at the Australian Institute of Sport. Sam commenced his undergraduate studies at the University of the Sunshine Coast, and is a former competitive member of Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club. KYLIE CONWAY Kylie has been Rowing Queensland’s Administration officer since March 2007, and is responsible for the organisation’s financial reporting and office administration. Kylie comes to the organisation with solid administration and financial experience gained from working in her family’s business and organisations such as the ANZ Bank. 7 CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Mr. PETER SCHRYVER It is my pleasure to present the Rowing Queensland Inc’s Annual Report for 2008 to members and stakeholders on behalf of the Board.
