Paranormal Beliefs: Using Survey Trends from the USA to Suggest a New Area of Research in Asia

Smith NORC at the University of Chicago, USA Neha Sahgal Pew Research Center, USA Abstract Americans continue to have beliefs in the paranormal, for example in UFOs, ghosts, haunted houses, and clairvoyance. Yet, to date there has not been a systematic gathering of data on popular beliefs about the paranormal, and the question of whether or not there is a convincing trend in beliefs about the paranormal remains to be explored. Public opinion polling on paranormal beliefs shows that these beliefs have remained stable over time, and in some cases have in fact increased. Beliefs in ghosts (25% in 1990 to 32% in 2005) and haunted houses (29% in 1990, 37% in 2001) have all increased while beliefs in clairvoyance (26% in 1990 and 2005) and astrology as scientific (31% in 2006, 32% in 2014) have remained stable. Belief in UFOs (50%) is highest among all paranormal beliefs. Our findings show that people continue to hold beliefs about the paranormal despite their lack of grounding in science or religion. This led them to an absorption with the Jewish creation myths in Genesis, which they obsessively reinterpreted to formulate allegorical explanations of how humans ended up trapped in the world of matter. The basic Gnostic story, which varied in details from teacher to teacher, was this: In the beginning there was an unknowable, immaterial, and invisible God, sometimes called the Father of All and sometimes by other names. “He” was neither male nor female, and was composed of an implicitly finite amount of a living nonphysical substance. Surrounding this God was a great empty region called the Pleroma (the fullness). Beyond the Pleroma lay empty space. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas. -

Email: [email protected] The present manuscript briefly reports and makes public data collected in the spring of 2016 as part of my b-thesis at the University of Crete, Greece. The raw data, syntax, and the Greek translation of scales and tasks are publicly available at the OSF page of the project. An extended version of the manuscript (in Greek), is available upon request. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first public dataset on the astrological and paranormal beliefs in Greek population. Introduction The main goal of this work was to test the relation between Astrological Belief (AB) to a plethora of psychological constructs. To avoid a very long task, the study was divided into three separate studies independently (but simultaneously) released. Study 1 explored the relation between AB, Locus of Control, Optimism, and Openness to Experience. Study 2 tested two astrological hypotheses (the sun-sign and water-sign effects), and explored the relation between personality, AB, and zodiac signs. Study 3 explored the relation between AB and paranormal beliefs. Recruitment followed both a snowball procedure and it was also posted in social media groups of various Greek university departments. -

EneRGY AS THE MEDIATOR BetWeen NAtuRAL AND SUPERNAtuRAL ReAlms KRistel KIVARI PhD student, MA Department of Estonian and Comparative Folklore University of Tartu Ülikooli 18, 50090 Tartu, Estonia e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT This article* discusses contemporary vernacular theory about the elusive ener- gies that emanate from the ground. These energies are reported to be the ultimate reason for different remarkable occurrences, both natural and supernatural. The hypothesis of special energies is expressed in local tourism, in ecological debates and healing practises, driving the curiosity of amateur science. In these expres- sions knowledge as a form of engagement with the supernatural plays an integrat- ing role between the individual and the forces beyond. Dowsing reveals the ‘energetic’ nature of reality, which will be discussed using three examples. Tuhala Nõiakaev (the Witch’s Well) as a peculiar natural sight in the north of Estonia has drawn together many reports of energy columns that are linked to underground rivers and cultic stones. Another place under discus- sion is also famous for healing energy points: Kirna Manor works as a centre for spreading knowledge of the interdependence of physical health and the search for a spiritual path with the help of energies that the next example, the Society of Dowsers, attempts to discover using scientific methods. In these examples ‘energy’ designates the position of the individual, in which the participative relationship with the environment works as a form of folk epistemology within the limits of cultural understanding. Kinane joked that he thinks "the only people who believe in poltergeists are people who don't have any real-world problems," and following that statement, he states that believing in ghosts and engaging in paranormal culture is stereotypically "white" (0:39-1:20). The parallel drawn between daily life andthe topic of race is referredto as privilege, and Kinane insinuates that white privilege leaves an individual with a significant amount of free time and resources to engage in seemingly illogical beliefs, such as ghosts; however, ghost hunting reality television lends itself to more thanboredom, as it is a new and exciting genre specific to the 21st century. In this thesis, ghost hunting reality television is explored and recognized as a cultural artifact. Born from the combination of secular methodology, religion, and technology, an unlikely and obscure genre explodes from obscurity to popular culture to such a degree that tier one celebrities, such as Post Malone, guest star on longstanding ghost hunting reality show Ghost Adventures (2008-present). -

The question it raises is whether further research into this controversial area as a technological forecasting approach is desirable, or unwarranted as being based on questionable fringe science. It is interesting to note, for example, that experimental research on instinct or intuition by Dr. Gerd Gigerenzer, director of the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin, indicates that intuitive wisdom often outperforms the calculations of experts (see his book ʽʽGut Feelings: The Intelligence of the Unconscious" (2007); also New York Times, August 28, 2007). Lee Future Studies Program, University of Houston, Houston, TX, United States Received 15 August 2006; received in revised form 13 September 2006; accepted 15 September 2006 Abstract Remote viewing is set of related protocols that allow a viewer to intuitively gather information regarding a specific target that is hidden from physical view and separated from the viewer by either time or distance. Research suggests that the same processes used to gather spatially non-local information can also be used to gather information that is temporally removed from the observer. This paper reviews the most common protocols for remote viewing — including Coordinate Remote Viewing (CRV), Associative Remote Viewing (ARV), and Extended Remote Viewing (ERV). 1 This remains a controversial field of study. -

Meta-analysis of experiments comparing clairvoyance and precognition The 22 studies yielded significant evidence for both clairvoyance and precognition with no difference in effect size (ES) between clairvoyance (ES = .009) and precognition (ES = .010). Thus the meta-analysis yielded no evidence that precognition is explicable through a clairvoyance and inference model. Survey. 167 first-hand precognitive experiences were submitted by respondents. People who acted on their premonitions fell into two distinct groups. One group acted if they foresaw events that could be prevented (e.g., a car crash). The other group scored low on the neuroticism scale and acted on their experience irrespective of the type of event foreseen. The majority of respondents were women and the experiences were usually about men, regardless of the respondent’s sex. Most experiences were dreams. The study replicated a previous finding that women over 45 who reported having had their first precognitive experience early on in life were significantly more likely to have fewer children than those who did not report having had their first precognitive experience until later. Postal Experiment comparing clairvoyance and precognition Overall the results were at chance. However, when the clairvoyance and precognition trials were considered separately, the clairvoyance condition yielded significant results (N=60, p=.05) whereas the precognition one was at chance (N=59, p=.5). -

11 The Substantiality of Spontaneous Cases1 IAN STEVENSON INTRODUCTION IN CONSIDERING A topic for this Presidential Address I was sorely tempted to discuss what might be called the political situation of parapsychology in relation to the field of science as a whole. Yet I have set aside this inclination because I believe that our political difficulties result from the general scientific immaturity of our field-yes, one can still say this after ninety years-and they will be removed or at least diminish only after further advances in our scientific work. I decided therefore to talk with you about my favorite topic within parapsychology, which is also the subject about which I can claim to know most from personal experience, the study of spontaneous cases. It addresses the research questions of: (1) Under what conditions would a person speak openly about conspiracy, and under what conditions would they remain silent? (2) What are the social factors that draw a person into joining with others who believe a particular conspiracy has occurred? And (3) is there any relationship between a person's education and profession that would increase or hinder a conspiracist's visible participation of his or her beliefs? A total of thirty interviews were conducted, ten each in New Orleans, Louisiana, at the 9/11 site in New York City, and West Virginia.
