RPSY304 – Paranormal Psychology Master Course Syllabus Course Overview (QM Standards 1.2) Course Description: By combining ideas from the social and natural sciences, as well as religion and philosophy, this course focuses on the importance of skepticism, scientific analysis, and valid logic when evaluating fringe science/paranormal claims concerning topics such as ESP, telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, psychokinesis, PSI dreaming, afterlife channeling, near-death experiences, ghosts, UFOs, alien abductions, astrology, paraphysics, healing art sources and other paranormal topics. Topics will be discussed within the framework of several general goals relevant to the course, which include (a) reviewing a variety of events that are considered to be paranormal, (b) addressing the public’s interest in paranormal phenomena, (c) evaluating and dispelling the myths surrounding paranormal events, (d) encouraging scientific rigor when examining paranormal events, (e) reviewing contemporary research designs and methodology, and (f) reviewing the consequences of erroneous belief systems. The course will be delivered entirely online, including exams, assignments and communication. Course Goals: Upon satisfactory completion of the course, the student will be able to: • Define & evaluate criteria for paranormal phenomena • Recognize and categorize common paranormal phenomena • Describe common explanations for the etiology of paranormal phenomena • Outline effective research methods to investigate specific paranormal phenomena • Integrating, citing and presenting material from a variety of scholarly sources in a professional forum Pre-Requisites (QM Standard 1.7) There are no course prerequisites for this course. Minimum Technical Requirements and Online Resources (QM Standards 1.5 & 1.6) In addition to a web browser (preferable Firefox) that is Blackboard compatible, you will need the other WVROCKS supported technologies outlined in the student policies section. Also, you will need Acrobat Reader and a word processor compatible with Microsoft Word. Online Resources: This course makes use of many online resources. I have made every effort to make sure the links I have are up-to-date. However, due to the changing nature of the web, you may find that a resource is temporarily unavailable or has been removed. If this should happen, please send me an email and I will find an alternative resource or modify the assignment accordingly. Attendance Verification and Financial Aid (QM Standards 1.4) Federal Guidelines require colleges to verify attendance in class. Attendance in a fully online class is verified by active student engagement in an activity. You must complete the Learner Responsibilities Quiz found in the orientation in order to receive verification of attendance. If you have financial aid and/or scholarships and do not complete the activity your financial aid and scholarship checks may be withheld. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas.

    Page 3 The Fall of the House of Meaning: Between Static and Slime in Poltergeist Murray Leeder A good portion of the writing on Poltergeist (1982) has been devoted to trying to untangle the issues of its authorship. Though the film bears a directorial credit from Tobe Hooper, there has been a persistent claim that Steven Spielberg (credited as writer and producer) informally dismissed Hooper early in the process and directed the film himself. Dennis Giles says plainly, “Tobe Hooper is the director of record, but Poltergeist is clearly controlled by Steven Spielberg,” (1) though his only evidence is the motif of white light. The most concerted analysis of the film’s authorship has been by Warren Buckland, who does a staggeringly precise formal analysis of the film against two other Spielberg films and two other Hooper films, ultimately concluding that the official story bears out: Hooper directed the film, and Spielberg took over in post­production. (2) Andrew M. Gordon, however, argues that Poltergeist deserves a place within Spielberg’s canon because so many of his trademarks are present, and because Spielberg himself has talked about it as a complementary piece for E .T.: The Extra­Terrestrial (1982). (3) A similar argument can be made on behalf of Hooper, however, with respect to certain narrative devices and even visual motifs like the perverse clown from The Funhouse (1981). Other scholars have envisioned the film as more of a contested space, caught between different authorial impulses. Tony Williams, for examples, speaks of Spielberg “oppressing any of the differences Tobe Hooper intended,” (4) which is pure speculation, though perhaps one could be forgiven to expect a different view of family life from the director of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) than that of E.T.

ABSTRACf The effect of Noncontact Therapeutic Touch (NClD on the rate ofsurgical wound healing was examined ina double-blind study. Full-thickness dermal wounds were incised on the lateral deltoid region using a skin punch biopsy instrument, on healthy subjects randomly assigned to treatment or control groups. Subjects were blinded both to group assignment and to the true nature of the active treatment modality in order to control placebo and expectation effects. Incisions were dressed with gas-permeable dressings, and wound surface areas were measured on Days 0, 8, and 16 using a direct tracing method and digitization system. Active and control treatments were comprised ofdaily sessions offive minutes of exposure to a hidden Therapeutic Touch practitioner or to sham exposure. Results showed that treated subjects experienced a significant acceleration in the rate of wound healing as compared to non-treated subjects at day8 (Mann-Whitney Ui Z =-5.675; n =44; p<.OOI; 2 tailed), and at day 16 (X2 =16.847, df =1; p<.OOI). Statistical comparisons are dominated bythe complete healing of13 of 23 treated subjectsvs. Oof21 controlsubjects by day 16. Placebo effects and the possible influences of suggestion and expectation of healing were eliminated byisolating the subjects from the Therapeutic Touch practitioner, by blinding them to the nature of the therapy during the study, and by the use of an independent experimenter who was blinded to the nature ofthe therapy. The findings of this study demonstrate, at least, the potential for NCIT in the healing of full-thickness human dermal wounds.

Without these documents, the best investigative reporting in the world could not have produced a book, and the secrets of CIA mind-control work would have remained buried forever, as the men who knew them had always intended. From the documentary base, I was able to expand my knowledge through interviews and readings in the behavioral sciences. Neverthe- less, the final result is not the whole story of the CIA's attack on the mind. Only a few insiders could have written that, and they choose to remain silent. I have done the best I can to make the book as accurate as possible, but I have been hampered by the refusal of most of the principal characters to be interviewed and by the CIA's destruction in 1973 of many of the key docu- ments.
