The Marian Apparitions in Fátima As Political Reality: Religion and Politics in Twentieth-Century Portugal
Center for European Studies Working Paper No. 88 The Marian Apparitions in Fátima as Political Reality: Religion and Politics in Twentieth-Century Portugal Paul Christopher Manuel Co-chair, Iberian Study Group Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies Professor of Politics, Saint Anselm College New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College 100 Saint Anselm Drive Manchester, New Hampshire 03102 603.222.4118 [email protected] Abstract The reaction of the Catholic faithful to the supposed miraculous events at Fátima serves as an illustration of how religion can influence the political life of a country. In this instance the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to three ordinary Portuguese country children over a six-month period starting on 13 May 1917. During these visits the children reported that she asked them to pray for the souls of sinners, for the soldiers in World War I, and for Russia. During and immediately after the Marian apparitions in Fátima, powerful conservative players in Lisbon seized on the symbolism of the event to discredit the anticlerical First Republic. As the situation unfolded, this religion-politics dynamic took the form of popular Catholic resistance in the countryside to an urban-based elite- driven secularization, setting the stage for the subsequent emergence of the Salazar regime. Some political scientists and historians have treated these events only as a case of popular reaction against modernity, without any enduring consequences. In this view, Fátima was not much more than a useful symbolic tool of conservative resistance to the First Republic, and it set the groundwork for the subsequent dictatorship. -

Date: December 2018 Tiago Miguel Lopes Carvalho PhD Candidate in Sociology Wolfson College 1 Contesting Austerity: A Comparative Approach to the Cycles of Protest in Portugal and Spain under the Great Recession (2008-2015) This dissertation compares the contentious responses to austerity in Portugal and Spain in the context of the Eurozone crisis and the Great Recession between 2008 and 2015. Despite many similarities in the origins and socio-economic effects of the crisis, the dynamics of contention in each country differed in terms of number, rhythm and actors. While Portugal and Spain experienced parallel protest dynamics until 2011, after that point the former falls into a pattern of “stop-and-go” with sporadic large events by social movements. -
Community Formation Among Recent Immigrant Groups in Porto, Portugal
Community Formation among Recent Immigrant Groups in Porto, Portugal By James Beard A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Stanley Brandes, Chair Professor Laura Nader Professor Alex Saragoza Summer 2017 Abstract Community Formation among Recent Immigrant Groups in Porto, Portugal by James Beard Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology University of California, Berkeley Professor Stanley Brandes, Chair The last decade has seen a dramatic increase in migration to Europe, primarily by refugees fleeing conflict in the Middle East and Central Asia, but with significant flows of refugees and other migrants from North and sub-Saharan Africa as well. Portugal is not among the primary European destinations for refugees or immigrants; possibly, in part, because there are fewer migrants in Portugal, it is an E.U. country where new arrivals are still met with a degree of enthusiasm. Hard right, anti-immigrant parties—on the rise in other parts of the E.U.— have not gained much traction in Portugal. This work looks at the relative invisibility of immigrants in Porto, the country’s second largest city, which may make those immigrants a less visible target for intolerance and political opportunism, but may also impede a larger, more self- determinant role for immigrants and their communities in greater Portuguese society. A major contributing factor to immigrant invisibility is the absence (outside of Lisbon and southern Portugal) of neighborhoods where African immigrants are concentrated. In Porto, communities do not form around geography; instead, communities form around institutions. -
