Aesculus hippocastanum Baumanii Baumann’s horse chestnut Discovered in Switzerland the early 19th century, Aesculus Baumannii was propagated from a sport (natural mutation) of the common horse chestnut Aesculus hippocastanum. It is a large tree with a broad crown, growing well in most soil types and is also tolerant to air pollution. In spring, the superb show of flowers starts, large double white blooms with pink centres. This tree is sterile so unlike our common horse chesnut it will not develop any conkers; disappointing for the young at heart but an advantage if being used for street planting. The leaves are large, made up from 5-7 ribbed leaflets and often turn golden brown in autumn. The population includes 30-40 plants of varying age classes from mature to seedling trees. Cupaniopsis (Sapindaceae) is a genus of about 67 species known from Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands of Micronesia, New Caledonia, and eastern Indonesia (Morat et al. 2012; Reynolds 1985; Hyland et al. 2010). Cupaniopsis anacardioides (carrotwood, tuckeroo) is native to Australia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea and has been introduced to the USA –– California (Lockhart et al. 1999), Florida (Oliver 1992), Hawaii (O‘ahu, Frohlich & Lau 2010; Maui, Starr & Starr 2011; and Kauai, Starr & Starr 2015). Establishment in the USA apparently has resulted from its usage in the subtropical nursery trade during the 1950s and early 1960s. The present paper documents the occurrence of the species to Texas, based on the following specimen. TEXAS . This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Interestingly, Harungana occurs in both Madagascar and mainland Africa, as does Psorospermum; Vismia occurs in both Africa and the New World. However, the phylogeny of the tribe and the relationship between the three genera are uncertain.

Jessop2 The sequence of families used in this Flora follows closely the one adopted by the Australian Plant Census (www.anbg.gov. au/chah/apc), which in turn is based on that of the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG III 2009) and Mabberley’s Plant Book (Mabberley 2008). It differs from previous editions of the Flora, which were mainly based on the classification system of Engler & Gilg (1919). A list of all families recognised in this Flora is printed in the inside cover pages with families already published highlighted in bold. The up-take of this new system by the State Herbarium of South Australia is still in progress and the S.A. Census database (www.flora.sa.gov.au/census.shtml) still uses the old classification of families. The Australian Plant Census web-site presents comparison tables of the old and new systems on family and genus level. A good overview of all families can be found in Heywood et al. (2007) and Stevens (2001–), although these authors accept a slightly different family classification. A number of names with which people using this key may be familiar but are not employed in the system used in this work have been included for convenience and are enclosed on quotation marks. 1. Bark pale gray or brown, ridged, and warty. Leaves up to 1 foot (32 cm) long (including leaf stalk), alternate, with 6 - 13 leaflets; leaf stalk without wings between the leaflets. Leaflets 2 - 6 inches (5 - 15 cm) long and ¾ - 2¾ inches (2 - 7 cm) wide, lance-shaped with pointed tips, with no teeth along the edges; leaflets may be opposite or alternate along the stalk; leaves fall in the early spring. Aesculus californica (Family: Sapindaceae) Common Names: California Buckeye, California Horse-chestnut Taxonomic Description: The California Buckeye is a large native, deciduous shrub or tree that is recognized by its broad, round shape and gray bark usually with a moss or lichen coating. The entire tree can grow between 10 to 25 feet tall (about 12 meters). Its compound leaves grow in leaflets of 5 that range from 5 to 17 centimeters and petiole from 1 to 12 centimeters. The leaves are tender to protect from severe weather damaging. This tree is the first to grow leaves in the spring, the last to bloom, and the first to lose its leaves. Flowers of the California Buckeye are grown from erect panicles; they smell sweet and are colored from white to pale pink. Fruits of this tree are capsules from 5 to 8 centimeters long, shaped as figs. Inside these fruits are smooth, round, 2 to 5 centimeters big orange- brown seeds that are poisonous. Growth Form/Habitat/Soil: The California Buckeye is adapted to coarse textured soils and medium textured soils for growth. It has no anaerobic tolerance and low CaCO3 tolerance, high drought tolerance and medium fire tolerance and water use. A pH minimum of 5.5 pH, and a maximum of 7.5 pH in the soil is required. Because the trees are able to grow in crowded, or moist, or even semi-shaded environments, they can commonly be found on dry hills, canyon slopes, and borders of streams. ID# GPAs V. 1, April 2015 TACF Fact Sheet American Chestnut vs. Horse Chestnut: How to Differentiate between “Chestnut” Trees A Tale of Two Chestnuts… American chestnut (Castanea dentata) and horse chestnut (Aesculus hippo-castanaum) are both deciduous trees that share the same short name – “chestnut”. But this short name is where the major similarities end. American chestnut is in the beech family (Fagaceae), along with beeches and oaks, while the horse chestnut is in the soapberry family (Sapindaceae), and most closely related to our native buckeyes. American chestnut So how do you know which ‘chestnut’ you have? Leaves The leaves of American chestnut are simple, meaning one leaf blade per leaf stalk. The leaves are typically long and narrow, with deeply-toothed edges. The teeth curve towards the tip of the leaf, making a breaking ocean wave pattern along the edge of the leaf. In contrast, the leaves of horse chestnut are compound, meaning that one leaf is made up of several leaf blades (called leaflets) per leaf stalk. Horse chestnut typically has 5-7 leaflets. The leaflet margins are also toothed, but the teeth are much smaller and do not make an ocean wave pattern. In Sweden and Lithuania it is non-native tree species, but natural distribution range is less than 100 km away in neighbouring countries. However here sycamore is able to regenerate and disperse to local forest stands. The aim of the study was to investigate sycamore regeneration in different forest stands and clearcuts adjacent to sycamore seed source stands. The study was conducted in southern Sweden and southwestern Lithuania. 30 sycamore source 48 adjacent stands of spruce, beech, oak, pine and clearcuts were selected for the survey. Results revealed that dominant tree species of adjacent stand and distance from a sycamore seed source were the most sycamore regeneration density influencing factors. The most suitable conditions for naturally regenerated sycamore were in oak stands. Sycamore regeneration was more abundant in the sample plots closer to the source stand and had a tendency to be influenced by prevailing winds.

Watson2 INTRODUCTION Horsechestnut can grow 90 or 100 feet tall, but is often 50 to 75 feet in the landscape with a spread of 40 to 50 feet (Fig. 1). The trunk grows to three feet thick and is covered with dark, somewhat exfoliating bark. The prominent white flowers, occurring in panicles at the branch tips, are the main ornamental feature of Horsechestnut. The large brown nuts covered with spiny husks fall and can dent cars and create a hazard on hard surfaces as people roll on the golfball-sized fruit.
