Victor Vignon 1847-1909:

French landscape painter and engraver, and member of the Impressionist group.

A student of Camille Corot, he was also advised by Adolphe-Félix Cals. Around 1878-1880, he was in Auvers-sur-Oise with Camille Pissaro, Armand Guillaumin and Paul Cézanne, where he painted subjects identical to theirs: Chemin de Chaponval (1881), La Côte Saint-Nicolas à Auvers (1882), Masures à Auvers (1883). He then moved to Nesles-la-Vallée in Eragny and Isle-Adam like Corot. Victor Vignon was very close to Theo and Vincent van Gogh, Dr. , and the pastry chef-writer-painter Eugène Murer who bought four paintings from him: Stormy Sunset, Autumn Effect, Woman with a Goat, Winter Morning, Golden Poplars, Wild Morning and The Thaw. He was also a friend of Frédréric Samuel Cordey and Auguste Renoir.

Victor Vignon was much appreciated by collectors, but censured by the art editors of the time.

He participated in the sixth Impressionist exhibition, April 2 to May 1, 1881, held at 35 Boulevard des Capucines in Paris. Other participants were Mary Cassatt, Degas, Forain, Gauguin, Guillaumin, , Pissarro, Raffaelli, Rouart, Tillot, Vidal, and Zandomeneghi.

In 1886, Victor Vignon took part in the eighth and last Impressionist painters' exhibition which took place at the Maison Dorée, today at 20, boulevard des Italiens in Paris. Auguste Renoir did not participate, having given up like others. Besides Victor Vignon, are present: Marie Bracquemond, Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Jean-Louis Forain, Paul Gauguin, Armand Guillaumin, Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissaro, Lucien Pissaro, Odile Redon, Henri Rouart, Emile Schuffenecker, Georges Seurat who exhibited the Grande Jatte, Paul Signac, Charles Tillot, Federico Zandomeneghi.

Victor Vignon did not enjoy the success of the other impressionists. In 1900, it was thanks to Doctor Viau that one of his paintings was shown at the Exposition Universelle of 1900. Auguste Renoir advised Durand-Ruel to choose among his small paintings. In 1910, Berthe Morisot's daughter Julie Manet-Rouart obtained a painting from Renoir for the sale organized in favor of Victor Vignon's widow. Among the great collectors who owned works by Victor Vignon was Georges Viau, whose collection was dispersed in 1907 and 1909; Stumpf, whose collection was dispersed in 1906, and who owned about fifteen paintings by the artist; Roger Marx, who had three paintings by Victor Vignon in his collection, the dates of purchase of which are unknown. Maxime Maufra bought a painting from him in 1903, La Rivière. Count Doria owned twenty-two of his paintings which were dispersed in 1899. The merchants, notably the Bernheim, organized a retrospective of his works in 1894.
