Texas Independence Day March 2, 2009 The Piney Woods Chapter of The Sons of the invite all Citizens of Athens and Henderson County Texas to join with them in the celebration of Texas Independence Day on March 2nd of each year. It is necessary and proper that we, Citizens of Texas, remember and celebrate this most important event in the establishment of an independent Texas Republic on this date in 1836 which 10 years later became the State of Texas. It is both fitting and proper for the Citizens of Texas to remember the brave 56 Texians and Tejanos who met on a cold March day in 1836 at an uncompleted, doorless, windowless building at Washington on the Brazos to declare Texas an independent nation and continued to draft a Constitution despite the distressing news from the Alamo and Goliad. In recognition of the 173rd Anniversary of this historic event in the annals of Texas history, both the Henderson County Commissioners Court and the City of Athens have issued Proclamations recognizing March 2nd 2009, as Texas Independence Day Charles Luna, President, Piney Woods Chapter, in Henderson County and Athens. SRT Chapter #1 President is Guest Speaker at USS Texas Dinner In advance of the presentation of the 2009 Sailor of the Year Awards on San Jacinto Day, Chapter #1 President Clay Fisher accepted an invitation to appear as the command guest at a rare Mess Night event held by the wardroom of the USS Texas (SSN 775). The “Dining Out” was convened at the Seamen’s Inne in Mystic, Connecticut, on the evening of Friday, April 17, 2009. The evening began with the “parading of the beef”, in which the Mess President pronounced the roast beef “fit for human consumption”. As the dinner progressed, the Vice-President of the Mess repeatedly called for fines due to violations of Mess Night rules (such as the wearing of a clip-on bow tie, etc.) The dinner was followed, according to military ritual, by formal and informal toasting, and Mr. Fisher then gave a speech about the origin and purpose of the SRT, and explained to the gathering that the men of the USS Texas are carrying on the vital job of preserving our freedom and personal Chapter #1 President Clay Fisher (center), liberty, as did the men who won independence for Texas in 1836, and just as did those presents Sailor of the Year Award plaque to (on left) USS Texas XO LCDR Don men’s fathers and grandfathers who won independence from England in the Revolutionary Tenney, and (right) CO CDR James L. WALKER COUNTY, TEXAS

Walker County was carved out of Montgomery County by the First Texas State Legislature on April 6, 1846. Huntsville was designated the county seat and first commissioner’s court meeting was on July 27, 1846. My 4th Great-Grandfather, Elijah S. Collard, was an original commissioner and attended the first meeting of commissioner’s court. The County was named for Robert J. Walker from Mississippi who introduced the Joint Resolution for the Annexation of Texas in the U. S. Congress. However, because Walker was a Unionist, during the Civil War the State changed, in 1863, the honoree to Samuel H. Walker, a Texas Ranger and gunsmith. Samuel Walker was killed in Mexico in 1847 and his remains were finally buried in San Antonio.

Walker County is only one of fifty counties that have adopted a County Flag. In 1984 a flag design contest was open to 7th and 8th graders and the winning flag was from the 7th grade Texas history class at Mance Park Junior High. My mother, Liberty Pollard, was the teacher of that class. The winning flag was formally presented and approved by Commissioners Court on October 21, 1985. The flag is green and has a white map of the county in the center. In the center if the flag is a green ring with two pine trees and the words” Walker County” arching over the circle. Along the bottom of the flag is the date of the county’s creation “1846”. article submitted By Randy Pollard 4/09

Son of the Republic of Texas Learn About Native Americans

The Monument Hill Chapter #53 of the Sons of the Republic of Texas (SRT) met at the Frisch Auf Valley Country Club in La Grange on Friday February 6th. Their guest speaker for the meeting was Mr. William Bellinghausen, Native American expert, from Bastrop. After lunch Bellinghausen spoke for an hour on Texas Indians culture and history. Beginning with the description of early native relics and artifacts his talk brought listeners into the Indian Wars of the late 19th century. “This is a fascinating presentation,” said SRT President Mark Adams, “everyone should hear it.” Club Treasurer Bob Schuhmann agreed, “This is a necessary and important study for Texas history. We thank Bill for his presentation.” Chapter #53 meets four to eight times a year in Fayette County. Its luncheon meetings include patriotic observances, guest speakers, and historical discussion about the era of the Republic. The group also performs community service through its once-a-month countywide cemetery renovation program.

Martin Walker – Texas Ranger Being interested in genealogy, I found a cemetery off FM 1209 in Bastrop County, close to where I live. I noticed it by accident, driving down the road on a winter ‘s day some 20 years ago. There is a Daughter’s of the Republic of Texas marker at the of Martin Walker’s grave, stating that he was seriously wounded at the battle of San Jacinto. Since my daughter, Donella Daywood Love is cataloging old cemeteries in our area for www.findagrave.com, I remembered this cemetery and decided to find a way into it as there was no visible access from FM 1209. We were unable to locate one as everything was so overgrown, so we approached a neighbor for directions. We found a freshly bull-dozed road going in the direction of the cemetery and took it to see where it would lead. Yes! It did indeed lead to the cemetery and we were able to talk to the man who owned the land and was responsible for the new road work. His name is Charles Rabensberg, and he had just three weeks prior, put in the road for the purpose of cleaning up this historic Walker Cemetery. I thanked him for his good work as he is not kin to the people buried there. The name on the old iron gates of the cemetery is “Walker-Watson Cemetery”. Martin Walker’s gravestone is a large, needle point. Martin was born on March 25, 1814 in Rockingham Co., North Carolina and came to Texas in 1835. He died in Lockhart on March 5, 1889. Capt. Tomlinson recruited him as a Texas Ranger about Jan 17, 1836 at Hornsby Station. Martin was also a private in the Mina (Bastrop) Home Guard. With Charles Rabensberg’s permission, I put a Republic of Texas marker on his tombstone for the Steven F. Austin Chapter of the SRT. A biography of Martin Walker is found at: http://mysite.verizon.net/res823yn/MartinWalker.htm.

George Washington Birthday Parade in Laredo, Texas This is the 6th year that the SRT has had a float in the oldest and largest George Washington parade in the world. This was the 111th year of the parade! This year the parade was on Saturday, February 21, 2009. Tom Green made a display rack for his van and placed 16 of his historic Texas Flags around the van. Carl Hill carried the Texas flag in the parade and Dale and Tom Houston carried some of the historic flags, and Chester carried his drum, that he made. The crowd is enormous (estimated at 200,000 + and they all love us! They stand and and yell and put their hand over their heart. There are thousands of small children all along the parade route and they run out into the street and touch us, and ask who we are.
