Dear Customer, Maybe it’s an age thing, but it really doesn’t seem that long since Christmas last rolled around. We are now firmly in the middle of our annual ‘busy period’: November and December is very much ‘make or break’ time for retail, and our order levels literally double compared to the rest of the year. Please forgive us if your order takes an extra day or two to process - we will be working around the clock to keep things running as smoothly as possible! As most record labels issue their ‘priority’ titles well in advance of Christmas, we have already seen the bulk of this year’s top releases and December consequently looks a little thin on the ground. There is however one final cherry on the cake that we are particularly excited about: Erato’s eagerly awaited issue of Berlioz’s Les Troyens, performed complete and uncut in Strasbourg earlier this year. We don’t often get to see a new recording of Les Troyens due to its immense scale, but Erato have pulled out all the stops here, enticing us with a stellar cast that includes Joyce DiDonato and Michael Spyres, wonderful orchestral playing from the Orchestre philharmonique du Strasbourg, all overseen by Berlioz expert and conductor, John Nelson. We have already been enjoying an advance copy and it most certainly doesn’t disappoint. It may even be a contender for the level of success we saw with Pappano’s Aida two years ago…! Other new titles we would like to point out include the fifth volume of Music from the Eton Choirbook on Avie (an excellent series so far); the latest issue in Naïve’s Vivaldi Edition featuring the opera ‘Dorilla in Tempe’; a set of five releases from Australian Eloquence covering Simon Preston’s legendary organ recordings for Argo; and an interesting selection of British Violin Concertos from Naxos (works by Patterson, Leighton and Jacob). BIS, Pentatone, ECM New Series and Melodiya form the core of our new special offers - all labels with superb catalogues and enticing discounts. We also have a selection of 2CD sets from Australian Eloquence reduced, plus a range of titles from Sony, including boxsets in their Classical Masters series and a listing of just over 50 DVDs. And don’t forget the other offers still running! The Autumn DVD and Blu-ray Sale has been going particularly well and remains available until we close for Christmas, plus we have titles from Warner/Erato, Decca/DG, Chandos, Brilliant Classics and much more. See the back page for full details. Finally, please allow us to thank you for your custom throughout 2017. The loyalty we see from many of you is sincerely appreciated. Please note that we will be closed between Christmas and New Year (details on the front cover), but will respond to any queries upon our return. We hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and wish you a Happy New Year! The cast includes Marie-Nicole Lemieux as Cassandre, Joyce DiDonato as Didon and Michael Spyres as Enée. A bonus DVD includes highlights from the live concert held on 15 April 2017. “Colin Davis’s studio recording of Berlioz’s Virgilian epic (Philips/Decca) has long held pole position, unsurpassed even by his later LSO Live version. This set, recorded live in Strasbourg in April, is so much more idiomatically cast than either. For DiDonato, Didon marks a watershed: she has done nothing finer on disc. This is singing in the Janet Baker/Lorraine Hunt Lieberson class, but I doubt either of those great Didons rose to the emotional extremes of suicidal despair that the American mezzo does here.” The Sunday Times, 19 November 2017 2 PRIORITY NEW RELEASES DG and Decca Veni Domine Victor de Sabata Advent and Christmas at Recordings on DG and the Sistine Chapel Decca - Beethoven, Bartoli (one track), Sistine Brahms, Mozart, Strauss, Chapel Choir, Palombella Verdi, Wagner etc £12.50 £29.95 DG 479 7524 DG 479 8196 (4CD) Also available Decca 579 0054 Andre Rieu Amore – new album CD + DVD Johann Strauss Orchestra;Rieu £11.95 Decca 579 7137 Christmas with Canterbury Cathedral Girls’ Choir £12.50 Classic FM 670 4753 The Nation’s Favourite Carols Terfel;Davidson;Griffiths;City of London Choir;RPO;Wetton £12.50 Avie The Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford and director Stephen Darlington continue their exploration of the Eton Choirbook, the The Gate of Glory extraordinarily vast and diverse collection of English sacred music Music from the Eton from the early Renaissance, with a fifth volume in their critically acclaimed series. From the pastoral and fairytale- like atmosphere of the story, to the prominent role of the choir (which sings the Dorilla in Tempe well-known 'Spring') and the insertion of several spectacular arias by fellow Basso, Malfi, de Liso, composers (thereby creating a 'pasticcio' opera, as was common at the time): Prina, I Barocchisti, everything combines to draw the listener in to the emotional twists and turns of Princess Dorilla in her valley of Tempe, Greece. THE MUSICAL PARTNERSHIP OF SERGEI PROKOFIEV AND MSTISLAV ROSTROPOVICH A CREATIVE PROJECT SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT FOR THE DEGREE MASTER OF MUSIC IN PERFORMANCE BY JIHYE KIM DR. PETER OPIE - ADVISOR BALL STATE UNIVERSITY MUNCIE, INDIANA DECEMBER 2011 Among twentieth-century composers, Sergei Prokofiev is widely considered to be one of the most popular and important figures. He wrote in a variety of genres, including opera, ballet, symphonies, concertos, solo piano, and chamber music. In his cello works, of which three are the most important, his partnership with the great Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich was crucial. To understand their partnership, it is necessary to know their background information, including biographies, and to understand the political environment in which they lived. Sergei Prokofiev was born in Sontovka, (Ukraine) on April 23, 1891, and grew up in comfortable conditions. His father organized his general education in the natural sciences, and his mother gave him his early education in the arts. When he was four years old, his mother provided his first piano lessons and he began composition study as well. He studied theory, composition, instrumentation, and piano with Reinhold Glière, who was also a composer and pianist. Glière asked Prokofiev to compose short pieces made into the structure of a series.1 According to Glière’s suggestion, Prokofiev wrote a lot of short piano pieces, including five series each of 12 pieces (1902-1906). He also composed a symphony in G major for Glière. When he was twelve years old, he met Glazunov, who was a professor at the St.

RODDA DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH (1906-1975) Festive Overture, Opus 96 (1954) Among the grand symphonies, concertos, operas and chamber works that Dmitri Shostakovich produced are also many occasional pieces: film scores, tone poems, jingoistic anthems, brief instrumental compositions. Though most of these works are unfamiliar in the West, one — the Festive Overture — has been a favorite since it was written in the autumn of 1954. Shostakovich composed it for a concert on November 7, 1954 commemorating the 37th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, but its jubilant nature suggests it may also have been conceived as an outpouring of relief at the death of Joseph Stalin one year earlier. One critic suggested that the Overture was “a gay picture of streets and squares packed with a young and happy throng.” As its title suggests, the Festive Overture is a brilliant affair, full of fanfare and bursting spirits.

ECM Nicolas Gombert ECM 1884 The Hilliard Ensemble Distinguished by the deeply sonorous and often melancholy music he composed for the Court of Emperor Charles V, Gombert has rarely been so well represented on disc as by this Mass and motet selection. … The Hilliard Ensemble perform miracles in bringing out so much detail in Gombert’s lugubrious music. The selection of motets which are interspersed through the mass movements clearly demonstrate their composer’s complete commitment to dense, generally low and invariably highly contrapuntal textures. D. James Ross, Early Music Review Tigran Mansurian ECM 1895 Ars Poetica The Armenian Chamber Choir is a superbly disciplined and well integrated ensemble … There is a resonance in the Armenian language which you just do not get in Western choirs, or even Russian ones for that matter – a certain glottal openness which gives the music a timeless, ageless quality. … Lovers of beautifully composed choral music should treat themselves to this recording, and those seeking to discover a new name will not be disappointed.

  • Sergei Prokofiev
Sergei Prokofiev Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev (/prɵˈkɒfiɛv/; Russian: Сергей Сергеевич Прокофьев, tr. Sergej Sergeevič Prokof'ev; April 27, 1891 [O.S. 15 April];– March 5, 1953) was a Russian composer, pianist and conductor. As the creator of acknowledged masterpieces across numerous musical genres, he is regarded as one of the major composers of the 20th century. His works include such widely heard works as the March from The Love for Three Oranges, the suite Lieutenant Kijé, the ballet Romeo and Juliet – from which "Dance of the Knights" is taken – and Peter and the Wolf. Of the established forms and genres in which he worked, he created – excluding juvenilia – seven completed operas, seven symphonies, eight ballets, five piano concertos, two violin concertos, a cello concerto, and nine completed piano sonatas. A graduate of the St Petersburg Conservatory, Prokofiev initially made his name as an iconoclastic composer-pianist, achieving notoriety with a series of ferociously dissonant and virtuosic works for his instrument, including his first two piano concertos. In 1915 Prokofiev made a decisive break from the standard composer-pianist category with his orchestral Scythian Suite, compiled from music originally composed for a ballet commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev of the Ballets Russes. Diaghilev commissioned three further ballets from Prokofiev – Chout, Le pas d'acier and The Prodigal Son – which at the time of their original production all caused a sensation among both critics and colleagues. Prokofiev's greatest interest, however, was opera, and he composed several works in that genre, including The Gambler and The Fiery Angel. Prokofiev's one operatic success during his lifetime was The Love for Three Oranges, composed for the Chicago Opera and subsequently performed over the following decade in Europe and Russia.
