This week the Year 10 students have been taking their End of Year Exams in the hall. Next week, it is the turn of the Year 9 students. End of Year Exams are important as they enable students Monday, 25th June to demonstrate how much progress they have made since September. They will also enable staff and students to identify where the gaps are, so that these can be closed prior to starting back in September. The end of year reports, which will include the students’ test results, will be sent out at WEEK 2 the end of term.

Finally, today we held our Annual House Sports Day. It was a fantastic event and it was good to see the students getting into the competitive spirit. At the time of writing this we have yet to announce the winners, but we will ensure we do next week. In addition to this, over the course of the next week or two, Mr Gant, House Co-ordinator, will report to you all the latest House Points and SPORTING FIXTURES positions! “Great works are performed, not by strength, but by perseverance.” 29th June Year 7-13 District Athletics (Samuel Johnson) Enjoy the weekend. Last week, seven students from my form organised and ran Cupcake Day. This event, held in memory of my dad who passed away recently, was a fundraiser for The Alzheimer’s Society, which is a care and research charity for people with dementia and their carers. We had well over 500 cakes donated by staff and students, as well as my own friends and neighbours. The cakes were sold at break and lunch on Thursday and because we had a few cakes left, we also sold them at break on Friday.

I am delighted to announce that we raised the fantastic sum of £205!

Massive thanks to Ruby B, Tilly C, Teigan G, Libby M L, Kacie M, Mariachiara R and Brooke T for their help.

Well done to Jasmine T, who has completed the AR reading challenge by reading over 1,000,000 words since the challenge started in September.

A fantastic achievement Jasmine. A ‘Headteachers Commendation’ and a lunchtime queue jump pass is on its way!

World Cup Mania! With the World Cup truly on its way, why not spend some time reading about the commitment and dedication the players put in trying to become the best they can be at the sport they love. We have a fantastic range of both fiction and non-fiction football books in the RBA library.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, The Official Book is the most authoritative and comprehensive preview of football's greatest tournament. Licensed by world football's governing body, it is packed with stunning photography and expert analysis of each team, its star players and its prospects in the finals. Essential reading for football fans everywhere.

A fantastic tale about football and growing up. Baljit could not be happier with life - his parents are supporting his ambitions, things are going great with his girlfriend Hannah, and best of all, he is in with a chance of playing football for his heroes, Liverpool FC.

Lionel Messi is a legend, Barcelona's star player and the world's best footballer. But when he was young, he was so small that his friends called him Little Leo and coaches worried he wasn't big enough. Yet through brav- ery, talent and hard work, he proved them wrong. Ultimate Football Heroes is a series of biographies telling the life-stories of the biggest and best footballers in the world and their incredible journeys from childhood fan to super-star professional player.

The Year 9 Assembly on Thursday, 21st June was led by Lloyd to discuss the Youth Connexions LBGTQ Group that brings together 13-17 year olds of any sexual/gender orientation, and discusses matters important to them. Also discussed was how LGBTQ young people can feel and be treated in society.

Thank you to Youth Connexions and Lloyd for leading such a thought provoking assembly to the Year 9 pupils.

As you by now know, we have invested in an excellent platform in science called Doddle (accessible from the school dashboard or www.doddlelearn.co.uk). On this platform, we have resources such as quizzes and PowerPoints to help catch up on work missed, or revise from, at all key stages.

Year 9s

In preparation for your End of Year Exams, you can access revision folders from the shared areas.

To access these from home:

Go to RBAdashboard.co.uk and put in your usual user details. You then need to go to the Student Shared area and go to science and then revision materials. If you have any trouble with this, see a science teacher and they will be more than happy to show you.

Special guest

On Wednesday, 4th July we have a special speaker coming in from the NHS to talk to Year 9 and Year 10 students. Professor Huon Gray MD FRCP FESC FACC is the National Clinical Director for Heart Disease for NHS and has been since 2013. This is an exciting opportunity for Year 9s and 10s to find out about all the different careers available within the NHS and coincides with the 70th anniversary of the NHS. Students will get the chance, and have been asked to prepare in form time and for homework, questions to ask Professor Gray. We are excited to be hosting such a prestigious man in the Science Department.

Nev Guijarro Assistant Head of Science

On Saturday, 14th July I will be running the Dixons Carphone Race to the Stones – running 100km non-stop along the historic Ridgeway to the Avebury Stone Circle. This is the UK’s most popular ultra-marathon with finishing times between roughly 8 and 48 hours and 2000 people taking part. I will be taking on the challenge of completing the event within a day (aiming for around 12 hours).

As well as doing this for the challenge and enjoyment! I am raising awareness and fundraising for The Mix – the event charity partner who provide young people under 25 with wellbeing, mental health, physical health and relationships support. Please encourage any young people you know to use this service when necessary and if you are able, please support my fundraising effort for this worthwhile cause. https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/GeorgeRowe1 http://www.themix.org.uk

BANANA HUNT, Saturday 25th August Following the success of the Easter Egg Hunt, it has been decided that there should be a similar fun event for children and their families on Saturday, 25th August – the Bank Holiday weekend. This will be a BANANA HUNT! Apparently a member of the Barclay family (not the one who gave us our park, but several generations previously) was instrumental in introducing bananas to the UK.

The exact form of the Hunt has yet to be finalised, but the committee are asking if some of you Friends of the park could commit to helping on the day. Volunteers will be needed to help with the setting up before hand, from about 11.30am, and also to help with the running of the event from 1.00pm to 3.00pm. If you feel that you would like to help with this, please let me know as soon as possible so we can be sure that there will be enough people to help.

Thank you for your continued support of Barclay Park.
