II. INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES

A. Instructional Assignments

Sue C. Bratton 47

Note regarding instructional assignments:

Because I teach primarily doctoral level and advanced clinical courses, my course enrollments are small, in compliance with CACREP standards for maximum student/instructor ratios for clinical courses. CACREP is the accrediting body for counseling programs. Clinical courses require that each student have 1 hour of triadic supervision weekly (2 students: 1 supervisor), as well as a group supervision experience 1:10 ratio. Additionally, as a part of my instructional and research responsibilities from fall of 2003 to present, I have directed the Center for Play Therapy in the fall, spring and summer semesters. From 1994 to summer 2003, I served as clinical director at the Child and Family Resource Clinic, and also served a shorter term (concurrent) as director of the Counseling and Human Development Center (both are the counseling program’s on-campus clinics). CFRC is UNT’s community counseling clinic staffed by advanced doctoral students, and CHDC is the practicum site for masters and beginning doctoral students. Because these activities have played an integral role in my instructional activities with graduate students (and as noted, for some semesters was the basis for a one-course release), I have included an explanation of responsibilities related to center and clinic under program service in an attached appendix.

1. Assigned Courses Graduate Since 2002, I have taught between one and three sections of the following COUN (Counseling Program) courses each Spring and Fall semester:

5000 Filial Therapy 5700 Intro to Play Therapy 5800 Doctoral Internship 6021 Advanced Doctoral Practicum 6022 Advanced Doctoral Practicum 6031 Doctoral Internship 6032 Doctoral Internship 6220 Counseling Principles & Procedures II 6230 Counseling Principles & Procedures III 6630 Advanced Play Therapy 6633 Doctoral Internship in Teaching

Between 1994 and 2002, I taught between one and three sections of the following EDSS (Counseling Program) courses each Spring, and Fall semester:

1. Graduate - Other Advisement Beyond Normal Department Requirements As evidenced by my involvement with doctoral students, both as major professor and Comm. member, I invest a considerable amount of time developing one-on-one mentoring relationships with students to guide them through their dissertation study, and to also provide mentoring on research projects, teaching, writing and professional presentations. Over the past 10 years, I have co-authored over 25 publications (including those in-press) with my students (several of those publications involved multiple students). I have also co- presented with doctoral students in over 40 conference presentations. I have secured a total of 22 research grants to support individual doctoral student research and dissertation study and to provide mentorship in conducting research. I actively seek to recognize my doctoral students’ outstanding work through nominating them for research awards and grants. To date, my doctoral students have been awarded 8 national research awards and 5 university research awards in recognition of their outstanding doctoral dissertation research under my direction. Counseling faculty members are not mandated to participate in doctoral Comm. work. I chair and serve as a very involved committee member on a large number of doctoral committees, and consider my mentorship of doctoral students an honor as well as a contribution to the counseling program.

Responsibilities as Director of Center for Play Therapy (2003 – present)

The Center for Play Therapy (CPT) is the largest play therapy training program in the world and is featured on “UNT Pride” (See Facts about UNT at www.unt.edu). The Center was awarded the UNT President’s award for the national and international recognition it brings to UNT and the Provost Citation for Excellence of a Center/Institute. The Center annually attracts students and professionals across the nation and internationally to its training workshops and to attend UNT for their graduate studies. Students and professionals from over 30 countries and 40 states have come to UNT for training through the Center for Play Therapy. Recently CPT, UNT and COE was featured on the cover of the Association for Play Therapy magazine for being a model center for universities to emulate in forming similar centers to promote research and training.  Develop and maintain a national play therapy outcome research data base.  Plan and direct annual 6-day Play Therapy Summer Institute (approx. 1000 attendees over 7 days).  2014-present- developed new research database for CPT website.  2014-present- submitting play therapy research to 3 major entities that evaluate and determine evidence-based practices for children.  2007-2008 – developed new web page – (www.cpt.unt.com)  2007-2008 developed 8 new on-line CE play therapy courses for CPT (www.cpt.unt.com)  Currently developing new CPT brochure  Play, direct and supervise annual 4-day Intensive Supervised Experience in Play Therapy (12 participants/10 hrs. per day)  Direct the production and sales of all CPT products and resources. CPT produces over 15 unique play therapy resources (see www.cpt.unt.com) including training videos, books, toys and online continuing education courses.  Supervise the on-going procurement of all play therapy literature in the world (books/articles/ dissertation/video/etc.) to house in the Center for Play Therapy Library and to include in the Center for Play Therapy On-line Bibliography of Play Therapy Literature (www.cpt.unt.edu). The Center houses the largest collection of play therapy literature in the world.  Oversee research and service projects in the public schools; currently, I directly oversee teacher training, parent training and direct services to 200 children in Denton ISD as part of a research and service project involving both master’s level and doctoral level counseling students. As a result, in collaboration with play therapy faculty, Dee Ray and Natalya Edwards, the UNT Center for Play Therapy is currently the largest producer of play therapy research in the U.S. and internationally.  Oversee Center budget and manage Center staff.  Write, direct, and manage grants (see grants section of vita).  Write Center reports and participate in reviews (Ex: Sunset Review, Center Director’s Report, etc.)  Interview and coordinate international visiting professors & Fulbright Scholars coming to UNT- CPT to study and conduct research of play therapy (currently, we have 2 visiting professors from Taiwan and Korea, and 1 Fulbright Scholar from Turkey). Over the past 10 years, CPT has sponsored 9 Visiting Professors, 3 Fulbright Scholars and 10 Research Scholars from other countries who come to the U.S. to study and research at the Center.  Actively recruit doctoral students through exhibiting at national conferences and through advertisement through professional associations. On average, approximately 60% of incoming doctoral students come to UNT to study because of the Center and the play therapy training

offered, along with the national reputation of the UNT Counseling program. CPT also actively recruits international students to the master’s program. The majority of all international students enrolled in the COE are counseling students specializing in Play Therapy.

Responsibilities as Clinical Director of Counseling Services, Child & Family Resource Clinic: (1995 – 2003)

CFRC is an interdisciplinary, community outreach clinic staffed by primarily by advanced doctoral students that provides counseling, assessment, and reading/academic tutoring. I was responsible for staffing and supervising an average of 12 advanced doctoral counseling interns and 4 master’s level interns (who counseled, on average, a total of over 120 clients at any given time) per semester. In addition I was responsible for facilitating a weekly interdisciplinary assessment staffing between three departments (faculty and doctoral interns from Counseling, Speech and Hearing, and the Reading program in Teacher Education) as part of the interdisciplinary assessment of school-age children and adolescents conducted at CFRC. I supervised the two day assessment process for approximately 20-24 children during the fall and spring semester each year. Additionally, I oversaw the budget and management of center staff. Unique products developed as a result of my directorship at CFRC included:

o 1995 - Developed a Child/Adolescent Assessment Training and Procedure Manual (167 pp.) for the interdisciplinary assessment process (all forms were either created or significantly revised). o 1996 - Developed a CFRC Clinic Policy and Procedure Manual (135 pages) - all forms were either created or significantly revised. o 1997 - Developed a customized, computerized data base in Lotus Notes (the first data base established at the counseling program’s clinics) and developed the companion intake and session summary forms for all clients (sample forms and template included in documentation).Updated and transferred data-base to Microsoft Access in 2002.  1998 - Developed CFRC Psycho-educational Report template in MS Word to streamline and standardize report writing (included in documentation)

Note: the majority of clinical forms currently used in the counseling program’s three clinics were developed by me during my tenure as director of clinical services at CFRC.
