Intersections of Memory, Ancestral Language, and Imagination; or, the Textual Production of Michif Voices as Cultural Weaponry Pamela V. Sing n his overview of the historic origins in modern thought of ideas playing a central role in the current debate over matters of iden- tity and recognition, Charles Taylor emphasizes that, whether it is a Iquestion of individual or of collective identity, “we become full human agents, capable of understanding ourselves, and hence of defining our identity, through our acquisition of rich human languages of expression” (32). Languages, in this context, signify modes of expression used to iden- tify ourselves, including those of art and literature, and all evolve, are de- veloped, and are acquired in a dialogical manner — that is to say, through exchanges with others. By underscoring the socially derived character of identity, this perspective explains the importance of external recognition, both on an individual basis and on a cultural one. In this article, I intend to focus on an aesthetic that, grounded in memory, demonstrates and requests recognition for a particular type of “love of words.” The words in question belong to Michif, an oral ancestral language that, despite (or perhaps because of) its endangered status, proves to be a powerful identity symbol. Relegated to an underground existence during the latter part of the nineteenth century, the resurgence of Michif words and expressions in literary texts reminds the community to which they belong, and that they are telling (back) into existence, of its historic, cultural, and linguistic sources, thus re-laying claim to a specific and distinct, but unrecognized space on the Canadian word/landscape. -

It’s my first time fishing for Arctic char. I’m excited. I’m here because I’m a scientist and I need fish guts, plus I love fishing. But when I look around the boat, there is no fish bonker— that wooden stick you use to bonk the fish over the head. Uh- oh. How do you kill the fish? I throw out my line carefully, so that I don’t catch anyone. The men are catching char after char, throwing them over their shoulders into the fish boxes and casting out again without looking back. The fish suffocate. When my friend catches her first fish I ask if I can kill it. -

Highlights include examples of institutional and governmental support, meaningful services, integration of cultural knowledge, values and events into the world of libraries, literacy initiatives, varying aspects of collection development policies (including respectful access to collections), Aboriginal storytelling, and partnerships (such as those involving digitization projects). INTRODUCTION: It is an honor for me to acknowledge the traditional Indigenous people of this land, the Huron people, for their roles and contributions to the history of Quebec City and this part of the world. Métis Identity in Canada by Peter Larivière A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Geography Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2015, Peter Larivière Abstract The understanding and acknowledgement of Aboriginal rights has grown in importance within Canada as a result of the ever changing legal landscape and as Aboriginal groups more forcefully confront decades of colonial rule to assert their historic rights. While this has predominantly come out of First Nations issues, there has been a gradual increase in the rights cases by Métis communities. Primary among these was the 2003 Supreme Court of Canada Powley decision which introduced how Métis identity and community identification are key in a successful litigation claim by Métis. This research considers questions surrounding the contentious nature of Métis identity including how Métis see themselves and how their understandings are prescribed by others including the state, through tools such as the Census of Canada. ii Acknowledgements There is always a fear in acknowledging the support of individuals who assisted over the years that someone may be missed. The 1885 Northwest Resistance: Causes to the Conflict Jesse Thistle Third Year Paper Chicago Style Citation In late spring 1885, Métis and Canadian forces clashed in a series of battles in northern Saskatchewan, collectively known today as the Northwest Resistance. The standard Canadian historiography regarding these confrontations has, over the years, tended to attribute full blame to one man—Louis Riel. A perfect example is Tom Flanagan’s Louis ‘David’ Riel: Prophet of the New World, which portrays Riel as a rabble-rousing firebrand who pits a simple clan of erstwhile ‘half-breeds’ against the Dominion of Canada to fulfill his divine mission from God and his delusional quest for glory.1 By portraying Riel as a manipulator, this historiographical myth simultaneously discredits the Métis cause while painting the Canadian government as justified liberators whose rescue efforts free the young nation from the clutches of a megalomaniac.2 Although some evidence points to Riel’s mental instability, he did not drive the Métis to war in 1885. To understand why the Métis and Canada fought in 1885, one has to look beyond Riel at three underlying causes of the conflict. One, the Resistance took place at the height of colonialism, as such it was a product of the Canadian and global imperialism prevalent during that time. Two, Canada never adequately dealt with Métis land claims from the 1870 Manitoba Act, which frustrated the Métis to the point of picking up arms in 1885. Three, drastic economic change and hardship had swept the west and the Métis had no help from the federal government, which increased Métis frustration. -

Uprising: The Power of Mother Earth, an exhibition by Christi Belcourt at the Musée d’art de Joliette April 29, 2019 – This summer (from June 8 to September 8, 2019), the Musée d'art de Joliette (MAJ) will present two new exhibitions, including Christi Belcourt’s Uprising: The Power of Mother Earth, curated by Nadia Kurd. Uprising: The Power of Mother Earth charts Christi Belcourt’s artistic career beginning with early works showcasing the natural world’s beauty and on to her large sweeping murals, including her collaborations with knowledge holder, storyteller, and emerging visual artist Isaac Murdoch. Spanning more than 25 years of art-making, the exhibition of about 35 works celebrates Belcourt’s many inspirational, artistic, and collective achievements. The exhibit also features Murdoch’s art whose iconic images, including Thunderbird woman, has been become an international symbol of the Indigenous resistance movement against resource extraction. Belcourt’s 2002 painting The Conversation – one of the most popular pieces in the Thunder Bay Art Gallery’s permanent collection – is made of dots that the artist created dipping the end of a paintbrush or knitting needle into the paint and pressing it onto the canvas. Like many of Belcourt’s best-known paintings, the piece evokes the traditional beadwork of First Nations and Métis women. Both Belcourt’s art and her poetry inspire reflection and conversation. People love Belcourt’s works showcasing beautiful twining stems, flower blossoms, and root systems which highlight the abiding connection of all life across Turtle Island (North America). In fact, in 2015, Belcourt’s Wisdom of the Universe (2014), was voted the visitors’ favourite artwork in the Art Gallery of Ontario’s entire collection. -
Authors, Illustrators, Musicians, and Translators
Authors, Illustrators, Musicians, and Translators GDI’s publishing, curriculum, and cultural development programs are greatly enhanced by the vision and talents of the Métis community. Without our Elders, authors, educators, illustrators, musicians, and translators, GDI would not be able to produce such a varied and high- calibre complement of Métis-specific resources. As a proud Métis publisher, owned and operated by Saskatchewan’s Métis community, we would like to show our gratitude to all those who have given their invaluable cultural knowledge and creativity towards the production of our resources. They are: Anne (née Carrière) Acco, now living in Laval, Québec, is originally from Cumberland House, Saskatchewan— the province’s oldest settlement. A Métis/Cree community, Cumberland House has produced a rich and vibrant culture based on its Swampy Cree (“N” dialect) language and adherence to traditional lifeways— including trapping and canoeing. This rich cultural life has greatly impacted Anne’s writing, and her life as a thinker, and an educator. Vince Ahenakew has been an educator for almost a quarter century. He has taught in Beauval and Ile-à-la Crosse, Saskatchewan, and has been an administrator for ten years. He is a graduate of the Northern Teacher Education Program in northern Saskatchewan, and is currently enrolled in a Masterʼs program through the University of Saskatchewan. He was raised by his grandmother, and would like to dedicate his resources to her memory and to all Elders. Gilbert Anderson was born in 1934. He comes from a large musical family and inherited a couple of family fiddles. He was always around Métis music, and continues to teach and promote fiddle and dance through the Edmonton Métis Cultural Dancers programs.
