Instead they desire to reconnect with, and be deeply rooted in, the common historical Christian tradition as well as their evangelical heritage: Welcome to what C,S. Lewis called “Deep Church”. Deep Church is far more than an ecumenical dream of coming together across the barriers of ignorance and prejudice: it is predicated upon the central tenets of the gospel held in common by those who have the temerity to be “Mere Christians”. This commonality in the light of post-Enlightenment modernism is greater and more . fundamental than the divisions and schisms of church history. Deep Church, as its name implies, is spiritual reality down in the depths - the foundations and deep structures of the Christian faith - which feed, sustain, and equip us to be disciples of Christ. Andrew Walker, Series Editor Foreword The introversion from which so many parts of the Church in the United Kingdom have suffered in the past forty years has taken various forms and still awaits a competent historian. There has obviously been an institutional aspect to this introversion, marked by a tendency to fidget with structures and elaborate bureaucracies. This in its turn has driven many of those thirsting for an immediate personal contact with the transcendent to form groupings in which charismatic experi­ ences can be enjoyed and words of fire can be spoken in the agreeable company of consenting adults. The accent in such assemblies has tended to be on the subjective and the emo­ tional at the expense of those normative and doctrinal aspects of the faith which equip the Church of Christ to contribute responsibly to the development of human society as a whole. Now from within the charismatic tradition and in dialogue with other Christians, the Deep Church conversation is help­ ing to re-imagine the Church of Christ and its task as we re-engage with the life of the public square in post secular Europe. The authors represented in this significant volume of essays continue, blessedly, to be dissatisfied with any narrow denominationalism. They seek to remember the common tra­ dition of the one Church in a way that serves its mission today. Without anything but gratitude for work done in the Academy, they share a conviction that the Church cannot give away its teaching responsibilities to the university. Some of them have experience of the fresh ways in which theologians embedded in particular church communities can help those who are xiv Foreword committed pioneers of the holy city to sketch and anticipate the future in a way that releases evangelistic energy. I believe this movement to be a gift from God and a gift to profound ecumenism. I am personally grateful for the encour­ agement and inspiration which I have received from Professor Andrew Walker who, with Luke Bretherton, has animated the Deep Church Group and spent himself with great generosity in communicating an inclusive vision of the remembering and return to the well springs, necessary if we are to take advan­ tage of the God-given opportunity of the present moment. Luke Bretherton and Andrew Walker This collection of essays is the fruit of an informal seminar series facilitated by the generous hospitality of Simon Downham at St Paul's, Hammersmith, London, where he is the incumbent. A large proportion of the participants in each sem­ inar were charismatic evangelical Anglicans. They were joined by church leaders from various confessions and religious con­ stituencies including evangelicals from New Church, Baptist, and Pentecostal fellowships as well as members of Anglo- Catholic, Roman Catholic and Orthodox traditions. Some con­ versational partners in the seminars were professionally engaged in academic theology, others were parish priests or involved in 'emerging' and youth church initiatives. Two key concerns shaped the conversations. First, all were looking for a way forward in marrying the immediacy of ecstatic experience with a theology of the mundane that took account of the every­ day pastoral and spiritual needs of ordinary Christians. Second, an underlying theme of the proceedings was how to find a way to the future by remembering the past. It was decided when the conversations were underway to name the deliberations 'Deep Church', a phrase first used to our knowledge in a letter C.S. Lewis wrote to the Church Times in February 1952. Lewis' letter was specifically written to argue that the Catholic and evangelical wings of the Church of England should stand together, as 'thoroughgoing supernatu­ ralists' against the forces of modernism. The general thrust of xvi Introduction his argument, however, was of truly ecumenical significance, for Lewis believed that evangelical and Catholic Christians drank from the same well of a common Christian tradition from the apostles to the councils, creeds and writings of the fathers of the early church. He was prepared to concede that the tradition continued in the Middle Ages and passed through the Reformation into the present day in truncated, partial and residual form, but even in this disjointed, partial existence it still bore the authentic marks of its divine origin and consequently was still efficacious.

After warning his hearers, as many of our leaders have recently done both in Pulpit and Press, that the battle in the near future will be with the forces of materialism and secularism, he said that the paramount need of the day was for consecrated men and women who know the meaning of mem· bership of the consecrated Society.

Before, however, he could go through the revised copy, Mr. Clark died, and this threw the whole responsibility of the work upon the editor. Mr. Maconachie then, after a careful examination of the revision, con­ sidered that the amount of matter provided was more than could be produced for a price at which the book could be sold. He therefore set to work to condense the whole, and this involved the virtual re-writing of some of the chapters.

    THE CHURCHMAN April, 1930. NOTES AND COMMENTS. Church Assembly Commission on Church and State. N spite of strong opposition to the proposal, the Church Assembly I has decided to set up a Commission to inquire into the present relations of Church and State. The Archbishop of York, who introduced the motion, based it on a previous declaration of Arch­ bishop Davidson: "It is a fundamental principle that the Church, that is, the Bishops together with the clergy and laity, must in the last resort, when its mind has been fully ascertained, retain its inalienable right, in loyalty to our Lord Jesus Christ, to formu­ late its faith in Him and to arrange the expression of that Holy Faith in its form of worship." The appointment of the Commission at this time may be harmless, but with the Bishop of Durham determined to bring about the disestablishment of the Church, it seems inopportune to stir up an unnecessary controversy. As The Times and other papers have pointed out, there is no new feature in the relationship of Church and State. It is obvious that the Commission would not have been appointed if the House of Commons had not refused to sanction the Deposited Book, but that refusal was quite in accordance with the terms of the Enabling Act, which set up the Church Assembly and arranged the procedure by which legislation was to be submitted to Parliament. The proviso that the mind of the Church must have been fully ascer­ tained seems to indicate that recent events do not indicate that the Church Assembly adequately represents the mind of the Church.

ABSTRACT This thesis uses a practical-theological methodology to explore the theology and spirituality of „spiritual warfare‟ that developed in the charismatic renewal from the 1960s. Beginning with a study of twelve charismatic Anglican pioneers, a detailed case study then explores spiritual warfare praxis in a charismatic Anglican congregation. The ensuing theological reflection focuses on the ontology of evil, through dialogue with Nigel Wright, Amos Yong, and Gregory Boyd, as well as Karl Barth and Walter Wink. The thesis argues for a positive ontology for evil powers, based on a charismatic hermeneutic of biblical texts; on the grounds that Jesus treated Satan and demons as real spiritual entities, the Pauline epistles refer to real evil spiritual powers in the heavenly realms, and charismatic experience supports this ontology.

    167 GRAHAM KINGS Canal, River and Rapids : Contemporary Evangelicalism in the Church of England Graham Kings maps out the shape of Evangelical Anglicanism in England today. He uses the metaphor of watercourses - canal, river, rapids - to describe conservative, open and charismatic evangelicals. For each category he describes key theological and ecclesiological features, organisations and people; He relates each evangelical type to its historical influences, and so reveals both the strengths and weaknesses of the contribution of each constituency today. Significant Anglican leaders can navigate more than one watercourse, and he concludes with a plea for Anglican Evangelical leaders to see NEAC 4 as an opportunity to reflect together on the challenges of our times. Introduction David Edwards, in a perceptive article on the church that Dr Rowan Williams has been called to lead commented: 'He will preside over a Church of England where the vitality is now mainly evangelical.' 1 There have been worrying signs over the last year, particularly in response to the appointment of Dr Williams, that this vitality could be dissipated in internecine strife: this would be tragic and is unnecessary. Ironically, the appointment of Dr Jeffrey John as Bishop of Reading elicited a more united response. In 2003 there are at least four significant evangelical Anglican events.
