Vol. 17 No. 08–June 2015 **************************************************************************************** A Homily from the Funeral of AGNES HAYMAN (May 28, 2015) 2 Corinthians 4:6 – 5:10; Psalm 139; John 11:17-27

[Martha] said to [], “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, he who is coming into the world.” Jn.11:27

From my earliest days, one thing that I remember being certain about was that God is real. That He’s not something to learn about—a proposition to consider or choose to believe or believe in—but someONE to come to know and to relate to day by day. The Gospel’s not a fantasy from a book of tale or teaching from long ago, but a truth—the Truth—which is of life & death importance, as relevant today as 2,000 yrs ago.

How was I certain? I saw it in my Mom. Prayer wasn’t just something you did Sundays at church, but rather part of everyday, every situation, because God was and IS with us always. I learned that faith is not just “spiritual speculation” but a flesh & blood matter.

Far too often, far too many of us live as though we imagined God–or the gods and/or goddesses, or what- ever—lived in some distant realm, unconcerned about us (if they’re there at all); and, whether or not we really believe, yet we occasionally do things to propitiate them (i.e. keep them happy). The idea is that at best they will bless us with good luck; but at least, if we keep them satisfied, they will do nothing to harm us, so we can get on with our lives, modestly happy by own devices.

In contrast, the Gospel tells us that we were made from the beginning by One who loved us into life— breathed life into vessels formed of the earth—created us for communion with Him: the fullness of life, eter- nal life—not just a place of reward, but LIFE with Him; but we’ve walked away—been led away; fallen away—and a shadow has fallen over us—a separation from His light & life, which the Church calls sin— and we’ve lost sight of our end, our purpose; of God.

The Good News is that the Light has been rekindled in human flesh—an earthen vessel, fashioned in the womb of a young woman named Mary—and brought forth into the world: the light of the knowledge of the glory of God[shining] in the face of [Jesus] Christ. That’s the humble vessel, who opened to us His Father’s heart, in His preaching, teaching & healing. That’s the vessel which was battered & broken upon the Cross by unfa- thomable suffering—there’s nothing we experience which He does not know, share, and take upon Himself there—as He gathered up to redeem all the suffering and brokenness of the world; and, overwhelmed by it all, to worldly eyes the Light was extinguished;…but in Truth The Light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not overcome—comprehend—extinguish it.

He is risen from the dead! and the risen Christ poured out and continues to pour out His Light into earthen vessels, that they may shine as His lights in the world and on into eternity.

Sadly, many—most? all?—of us prove far too often to be pretty poor containers, giving more heat than light; ...... continued page 2…

However, when our hearts and minds, eyes and wills are focused upon and filled with the One who is the Light, we do shine; we do show forth Christ. So, St. Paul wrote of a resiliency which re- sults, coming not of ourselves, but of the Treasure contained within: Jesus, shining in and through us.

In that light—His Light—everything we do, the suf- fering and the joy, the failures and the triumphs are set into the context of eternity, the Divine Plan of Re- demption; and the care for the least—the ungrateful as well as the meek—becomes an offering to the Fa- ther, a chance to shine His light and to grow closer to The persecution of Christians has escalated in recent years with the rise of militant Buddhist nationalist groups in Sri the One who is our Life. In their article, Girgis, George, and Anderson defend what they call the conjugal view of marriage. “Marriage,” they write, “is the union of a man and a woman who make a permanent and exclu- sive commitment to each other … that is naturally fulfilled by bearing and rearing children together.” They defend this view against what they call the “revisionist view” of marriage, which redefines marriage to include, among other things, same-sex couples.
