SEVEN SISTERS ATHLETICS ARCHIVE

Last updated: June 14, 2016 SEVEN SISTERS HISTORY

In November 1980, Barnard hosted Bryn Mawr, New Rochelle and Vassar in a four team basketball tournament, won by New Rochelle. Following the tournament, the original Seven Sisters institutions - Barnard, Bryn Mawr, Mount Holyoke, Radcliffe, Smith, Vassar and Wellesley - joined to conduct championships in common sports. Radcliffe (now Harvard in the athletic arena) was invited but opted not to join, and Barnard (now competing as Columbia) was unable participate in all championships.

Without Radcliffe and Barnard, only five of the original Seven Sisters remained. Haverford and Swarthmore were invited to join the championships as cousins, and depending on the tournament, several other schools have been invited to compete, including: St. Catherine, Agnes Scott, Simmons and Elms.

Currently, Seven Sisters Tournaments are held in crew, cross country, squash, swimming & diving and tennis. Basketball Last held in 2010 VEN SISTE The Seven Sisters Basketball Championship was held annually from 1981-2006. Over that span, Smith took home SE RS 11 titles, and Mount Holyoke prevailed six times. The Lyons came out on top in each of the final five championships from 2002-06 before the event shifted to a classic format in which teams would gather every other season.

Smith was the winner of the Varsity 8 race and Mount Holyoke captured the Novice Eight victory. In 1989, the regatta expanded and included four boats from each school. Columbia competed in the regatta until 1994 with Vassar dropping out of the regatta after the 2003 championship. Occasionally the regatta has featured boats from Mills and Simmons College.

Mount Holyoke was the winner of that initial tournament, defeating Smith in the title game. Wellesley won its Seven Sisters-record eighth championship in 2006, when it downed Wheaton 4-1 in the finale. It was the Blue’s 12th straight trip to the championship match. Right behind Wellesley with six titles is Swarthmore. Smith has been crowned champion three times, while Mount Holyoke and Haverford have won two times apiece. captured one title. In 2007, the structure of the Seven Sister Field Hockey tournament changed from a championship to a classic format. In the Classic format, two teams were randomly selected to play each other; with every team playing one game per day of the tournament. A tournament champion was not crowned, nor an MVP chosen, but an All-Classic team was selected.

Event by event results from Swimming and Diving available from 2007-2016. Tennis The Seven Sisters Tennis Championship has existed in a variety of formats for over 30 years. Up until 1983, the event consisted of a single-elimination tournament with a draw of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. Awards were presented to the individual singles and doubles champions and runner-ups. Players from other area colleges competed in the Invitational along with athletes from Barnard, Bryn Mawr, Mount Holyoke, Smith, Vassar and Wellesley. Major changes took place in 1983. The new format offered competition exclusively for the Seven Sisters schools. At that time, each school entered four singles players and three doubles teams, with athletes participating in just one event. Round-robin play replaced the individual format, and a team champion was crowned. In 1986, Columbia dropped out to compete exclusively at the Division I level. The five remaining schools - Bryn Mawr, Mount Holyoke, Smith, Vassar, and Wellesley - have carried on the tradition ever since. The current format of three singles and two doubles teams was first introduced in 1997.
