Following the tournament, the original Seven Sisters institutions - Barnard, Bryn Mawr, Mount Holyoke, Radcliffe, Smith, Vassar and Wellesley - joined to conduct championships in common sports. Radcliffe (now Harvard in the athletic arena) was invited but opted not to join, and Barnard (now competing as Columbia) was unable to participate in all championships. Without Radcliffe and Barnard, only five of the original Seven Sisters remained. Haverford and Swarthmore were invited to join the championships as cousins, and depending on the tournament, several other schools have been invited to compete, including: Agnes Scott, Haverford, Swarthmore, Simmons and Elms. Seven Sisters Tournaments are currently held in basketball, crew, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, squash, swimming and diving, tennis, and volleyball.

  • As Sex Discrimination in College Admissions
\\jciprod01\productn\H\HLC\51-2\HLC206.txt unknown Seq: 1 20-SEP-16 14:23 “Gender Balancing” as Sex Discrimination in College Admissions Shayna Medley* As women continue to apply to college in greater numbers than men and, on average, put forth stronger applications, many colleges have been engaging in “gender balancing” to ensure relatively even representation of the sexes on their campuses. This Note aims to call attention to the practice of gender bal- ancing and situate it in the context of the historic exclusion of women from higher education. Preference for male applicants is an open secret in the admis- sions world, but it remains relatively unknown to the majority of students and scholars alike. Those who have addressed the issue have often framed it as “affirmative action for men.” This Note takes issue with this characterization and proposes reconceptualizing “gender balancing” for what it really is — sex discrimination and an unspoken cap on female enrollment. Further, this Note argues that the “affirmative action for men” framework is detrimental both to the conception of race-based affirmative action and to sex discrimination. Af- firmative action attempts to counterbalance systemic educational inequalities and biased metrics that favor white, upper- and middle-class men. “Gender balancing,” on the other hand, finds no basis in either of the two rationales traditionally recognized by the Supreme Court as legitimate interests for affirm- ative action programs: remedying identified discrimination and promoting edu- cational diversity. Gender balancing cannot be legitimately grounded in either of these justifications, and thus should not be characterized as affirmative action at all.

  • Maria Mitchell's Legacy to Vassar College: Then And
Library and Information Services in Astronomy IV July 2-5, 2002, Prague, Czech Republic B. Corbin, E. Bryson, and M. Wolf (eds) Maria Mitchell's Legacy to Vassar College: Then and Now Flora Grabowska Vassar College Libraries, Poughkeepsie, NY 12604, USA fl[email protected] Abstract. Maria Mitchell became Vassar's first Astronomy Professor and Observatory Director in 1865. Her teaching emphasis on students learning by direct observation and analysis is continued today at Vassar College. Several of her students went on to prominence in astronomy, two of them succeeding her at Vassar. Astronomy majors today, both male and female, consistently achieve success after Vassar, in astronomy as well as in other fields. She encouraged her students to present their findings at scientific meetings and in scientific journals, also encouraged today as undergraduates co-author research papers with faculty members. She insisted on excellent facilities and built up the library collection, maintained today to a standard remarkable for a college of just under 2,500 undergraduate students. 1. Great Beginnings Matthew Vassar was keen to have female teachers at Vassar College (Haight 1916). Maria Mitchell had achieved world fame with her 1847 telescopic discov- ery of a comet and was an excellent choice, becoming Vassar's first astronomy professor in 1865. In a eulogy at her funeral in 1889, Vassar College President Taylor concluded, \She has been an impressive figure in our time, and one whose influence lives." (Taylor 1889) Henry Albers, Vassar's fifth Observatory director (the first male!), referring to our fine facilities today, wrote, \In keeping with the legacy of Maria Mitchell, these facilities enable today's students to learn and apply the most modern astronomical techniques." (Albers 2001, 329) This presentation aims to confirm that the legacy has been self-perpetuating and lives on.

The Board of Trustees This year is marked by the termination of the chairmanship of Robert G. Dodge who has for twenty-four years been a mem- ber of the Board and for seventeen years its chairman. We have had many occasions on which to try to express the appreciation of the College for Mr. Dodge's magnificent service. All those efforts are inadequate to express the indebtedness we feel for the clarity of his vision, the soundness of his judgment, the keenness of his insight, and the strength of his kindness and generosity.
