Foundation for Visual Culture Nina Sosna Monumentality ephemerated Monuments, which are generally considered visual, become the object of visual research much less frequently than any other art form. However, closer investigation shows that monuments are an interesting model or even frame of analysis. They are quite peculiar, and paradoxical objects, as they controversially combine many different kinds of things: the immaterial traits of collective imaginaries and the heavy materiality of stone or bronze, fluctuations of memory and the conservation of ideology, object and remnant, arrested past and an attempt to change the future. 1.
