DARREN VAUGHAN SPORTS EDITOR Maison White may just be wrapping up her junior year, but she’s already established herself among the best female athletes to come through Grantsville High School. The past few years have represented a “golden age” for Grantsville’s girls sports teams, and White has played a major role. She was a member of the Cowboys’ last two state cham- pionship softball teams, helped the volleyball team reach the second day of the Class 3A state tournament in each of the past two seasons and has played in the Class 3A state girls basketball semifinals three years in a row — and she’s been a key player in all of that success. But this year, she took a major step forward. She wasn’t just a role player anymore. White became a true superstar, leading vocally and by example as she turned into one of the state’s premier female athletes, regardless of classification. The purpose of the Sterling Scholar Awards is to publicly recognize and encourage the pursuit of excellence in scholarship, community service, leader- ship and citizenship of public high school seniors in the state of Utah. The Deseret News and KSL Broadcast Quinton Adair Eden Beazer David Bennett Group developed the program in the 1960s to focus attention on outstanding seniors in order to recognize them pub- licly, as well as award cash scholarships and tuition waivers from participating institutions. A Sterling Scholar demonstrates excel- lence in academics, leadership, service, interview skills, and one of 15 specific categories, which include agriculture sci- ence, business and marketing, computer technology, dance, English and literature, family and consumer sciences, general scholarship, instrumental music, mathe- matics, science, speech and drama, skilled and technical education, visual arts, vocal performance, and world languages. Candidates for Sterling Scholar are selected by their high school. The Sterling Scholar Awards program seeks to com- mend and encourage excellence among all students.
