RADIO MASSACRE INTERNATIONAL - RAIN FALLS IN GREY (CD) Is Rain Falls In Grey different from our other CD's ? Very much so. They're all different otherwise it wouldn't be worth making them, some are more different than others, and this is the album we wanted to make this time. It's quite a departure from the sequencer/electronics of `Emissaries' but if you listen closely, it's the same people at the core. We have over the last three years enjoyed several rewarding collaborations with other artists, having operated pretty much in a

8-9-2007 pagina 11 van 22

three-sided bubble before that. We have shared a stage with Damo Suzuki on several notable occasions, which introduced us to some valued collaborators besides Damo himself. Martin Archer was one such artist, who we found ourselves onstage with in Sheffield and immediately asked him to contribute some hot wind to the album. We've been after a reeds player for years, but you never know when one's going to turn up. In late 2006 we very much felt the glorious spirit of the Gong Unconvention in Amsterdam and as our album was taking shape we decided to ask Daevid Allen to create some unique artwork for the project. We knew that he had seen his personal future of glissando guitar playing because of Syd, and so we felt that this tied in beautifully with our wish to acknowledge Syd's pioneering spirit in the realms of space rock through some of the pieces on this album. Whilst at the Gong Uncon we also met with American violinist Cyndee Lee Rule, who expressed an interest in contributing after she heard us on a CD of ours (Septentrional) she bought in aid of the Tim Blake legal fund. The violin being an important element in much space rock, we had to say yes and we were truly vaporized by her contributions. The album is in many places like a greatly expanded RMI line-up (with us all doubling on keyboards too) and we were very excited by it as it came together. Being a guitar/bass/drums trio as well as sequencer and electronics wizards, ( I love that expression) it was only a matter of time before our dark side was fully let off the leash in the `full on' opus which opens the album. On a philosophical level the pieces can be seen as a celebration of the eternal life and energy that pioneers such as Syd Barrett give through their music for us all to share , and the sadness when they lose their way like he did. The conclusion of the album is more of a reflection on the dearly departed, whose physical-being is surrendered but whose spirits will always be with us because of what they gave of themselves during their time with us. Or alternatively, it's a great collection of prime space rock to play loud and enjoy for what it is and not get too hung upon what it all means. The album title is a quote from the Syd Barrett song 'Baby Lemonade' which we felt summed up the elegiac mood when we first reflected on his passing, although the opening piece is a vibrant celebration of many of our favorite elements of space rock, with homages to Syd's Floyd, Gong, Hawkwind, The Kosmische movement and much else. (I hear Van Der Graaf in the reed playing, there's a cheeky Robert Wyatt quote on drums and hell there might even be a bit of Deep Purple in there somewhere). By contrast, the closing track `Far Away' could be seen to represent a yearning to be with the departed for just a little longer, apparent here in Gary's guitar playing. The only thing which really matters is how it all works as an entity to be savored and enjoyed with your drug of choice be it tea, nicotine, red wine, marijuana, acid or just good old fresh air regardless of our past track record and cultural reference points. We always make a bargain with new music to see it on it's own terms, and we know many of our audience and Cuneiform diehards do too. There will be many fans who wanted us to make the same album as `Emissaries' again, but in presenting something different we'll try and take them where we want to go. Radio Massacre International

QUADRA - FIRST CONTACT (2-CDR) Quadra came about after Brendan Pollard (Rogue Element) invited some friends around for a jam at the Rogue Element Studios one fine and sunny weekend in February 2006. The participants were Brendan, Steve Humphries (Create, Astrogator), John Sherwood (4m33s, Entity) and Jez Creek (Modulator ESP,

Astrogator). The jam turned into an improvised recording session, the fruits of which are now available for release. In the meantime the participants decided they enjoyed getting together so much that they would like to repeat the experience, both in the studio and on stage. Press Information

[‘RAMP] & - CEASING TO EXIST (CD) Stephen Parsick and Frank Makowski, once members of the Berlin school, have been in self-imposed exile from that school of musical thought for the past few albums, exploring their “doombient” side as they call it. This time they have teamed with ambient guitarist Markus Reuter, and the result is their darkest yet, along the lines of and B. ’s Stalker. Deep dark rumblings are the order of the day, formless black holes of sound devoid of melody or perceptible rhythm. Occasional discrete notes are heard on “Seelenmord,” but it is just as often almost blank, a canvas with but a few strokes of black or dark grey. A few more textures emerge on “Yet Another Ambient Track,” but up until then it is extremely minimal, yet heavy. “Number Nine” dives deeper still, quite haunting. “My Guitar Gently Weeps” is miles brighter by comparison, moving somewhat into more traditional minimal ambient, some welcome softness to salve the rough harsh coldness that has gone before. “Holier” is a long slow minimal fade from black to black. I am certain that Parsick and company have succeeded in what they set out to do, but it will take a very adventurous soul to want to accompany them on this bleak journey. PYRAMID PEAK - OCEAN DRIVE (CD) Oh my goodness! Sequencer albums have certainly made a dramatic resurgence over the last few years but with quality like this the style hardly seems to be running out of steam, rather it is going from strength to strength. I recently gave Pyramid Peak's cdr 'Atmosphere' a good review but this is something else entirely. 'Ocean Drive', their first release on conventional cd follows a much more 'Berlin school' path but also takes them from being a good band to being one of the very best putting them up with Ramp and Rainbow Serpent. Germany now has three bands to combat the AirSculpture, RMI, Under the Dome, Redshift onslaught from the UK. A heartbeat gently pulses over weird, mysterious drones but you only have to wait a minute before a shuffling sequence drifts in and out of the bubbling mist. A melody, low in the mix, is both melancholy and hinting at imminent danger at the same time. This then continues through to almost the end before fading back to the heartbeat that introduced the piece. The twenty three minute title track comes next and this time it is less than a minute before the sequence emerges above the exquisite synth pads. Less than two minutes in and another laser sharp sequence steps into formation and settles into Schulze territory for the next ten minutes. We then get a break, taking us gently to those hidden depths within ourselves. Garbled voices can just be heard heralding the next pulsating staccato onslaught, heavier than before with a superb lead line accompanying it. Metallic, cosmic rumbles are as effective a way as any to commence 'Dive' but as in previous tracks the atmospheric introduction is not left on its own long before a sonic cascade joins it. The melody is the best so far fitting in with the sombre synth pads perfectly. More faint talked vocals can just be made out but this time they are female. 'Sunrise' breaks over the ocean and birds fly through the morning haze. The images created are so vivid you could almost be there. The peace is shattered after three minutes (a long introduction that one!) by an urgent sequence and a melody almost echoing the bird

8-9-2007 pagina 13 van 22

cries. This is a track full of the joy of being alive, the ideal accompaniment to a warm but energetic summers day. 'Twilight' finishes the album but this isn't all gentle sleepy stuff, oh no! The strident sequence reminds of Jarre but the lead is much more Tangerine Dream. Have they saved the best till last? Yup I think so. Five minutes in but things are still building and becoming more intense. The additional track 'Psycho' starts with fittingly dark, moody distorted drones. A brooding sequence starts up creating an unsettling atmosphere but then a higher register sequence is brought into play creating quite a contrast with the first. When the lead line comes in it is excellent emphasizing the uneasy undercurrents. In the seventh minute the pace quickens dramatically as if the chase is on. The melodies get better and better right until the end. This is an excellent addition to already superb album. DL

FABIO OF BIONIGHT SBRIZZI - COMUNICARE (CDR) Sbrizzi FaBIO is Mac’s musical partner; together they’re the Italian duo BIOnighT. It is thanks to Mac if we can listen to this solo work that Sbrizzi FaBIO wanted to keep in his archives. Comunicare is ”different” on an artistic level. There are few sequences and all the minimalist notes that we hear unravel are conceived, one by one, by Sbrizzi. A remarkably meticulous work which takes an enormous amount of time but gives astonishing results. This is rather amazing, especially when we listen to the first notes of Ipnoestasia. They are nimble and resound like glockenspiels on rising pulsations at irregular intervals. Very low, the pulsations form reverberating circles, looking further into a harmonious and warm impulse. A fluid tempo on shattering percussions flies with precision on a spiral movement of harmonious hypnosis. The chords cascade on synthetic pads that move in floating on a rather airy rhythm, thus creating two contradictory tempos. A superb synth, with sensual dashes, sails solitary on this superb track. This is an astonishing piece of music that impresses at the highest level. It wouldn't really matter if the rest of Comunicare bad, as this part alone is worth the price of this CD. Luckily, though, this is not the case. As the first chords of Ampipensieri start, we are bewitched by this minimalist tempo that ravels with grace. The track unravels à la Philip Glass, moving on a bi-linear passage that separates two distinct lines, to parallel movements based on a spectral synth. Superb violin layers add a romantic depth to Ampipensieri, which adds cadences of whirling notes in an increasingly harmonious sphere. Atonal, Animus Musicorum is a track with aggressive modulations, animated by explosive percussions and pulsations on a notched movement. Leningrado, instead, is a superb procession that evolves with a plaintive guitar on an undulating movement with floating and synthetic pads. Sbrizzi seasons this musical carousel of spiritual minimalist chords and a solo with emanations on progressive, wrapping layers. A marvelous daydream that ends on flying notes in spiral contours. Leningrado is another strong track. Written with his buddy Mac, Respiro Te is a beautiful linear emotion with a very beautiful that oscillates between the sonorities of an old organ and those of an accordion. On the rhythm of an astral walk, where weak vocal intonations mix with the harmonious breaths of floating synths, Respiro Te dies out on a violin and a bass that slowly fade out. Like it or not, we are always influenced by the description of an album before buying it. When I found out that Sbrizzi FaBIO had used very little while making Comunicare I was disappointed. Because a sequencer is synonymous with rhythms, multi-sound musical swirls, and many other things. And I was wrong. Comunicare is a fantastic album, a powerful opus where Sbrizzi FaBIO shows ingenuity and an innate talent for composing music. A great CD

8-9-2007 pagina 14 van 22

full of surprises, emotions, tenderness and spirituality. All of that in the most astonishing sound structure. Comunicare by Sbrizzi FaBIO of BIOnighT is the album of 2006 in the universe of EM, a timeless work, with no borders. You have to get this one, you can't do without it. PARALLEL WORLDS - OBSESSIVE SURREALISM (CD) “Obsessive Surrealism” is the fourth full-length release of musician Bakis Sirros aka Parallel Worlds, one continuing the path of innovative dreamy atmospheric electronics since he started his music project in 1998. In a way he again succeeded in surprising me as Bakis reaches new heights with the eleven tracks featured on the album. The combination of fat sounds from his big analogue modulars and step sequencers with the output of modern electronic gear has worked out very well this time. There’s a beautiful sense of warmth and melancholy to be felt throughout the whole album, especially in the intimate sound sculptures of the opening track “Beneath Fear”, the soft lingering of “Increasing Complexity” or the dense realms of “Reflective”. And although these 60 minutes of music as such may not be that easy or accessible at times (“Into the Caves of the Mind” is delving just a bit to deep for me), the emotional contents is always there or to be noticed just beneath the surface. But only if you have an open mind towards this kind of music and allow your ears to hear its deeper level. Nice going Bakis! Bert Strolenberg

DEAN DE BENEDICTIS - SALVAGING THE PAST (CD) Rhythmic instrumental electronica blending synthetic and acoustic sounds to produce an exotic ambient edge. This is a varied album with beats and rhythmic passages, flutes, cello, voices, guitars and plenty of dense, bright atmospheres and sequences. Salvaging The Past has a powerful sound for environmental music, beautifully melodic and poignant at times - in places with beats clear and solid, although too ambient in nature to be beat-driven music. Dean De Benedictis has certainly produced a staggeringly professional sound, musically very mature and moving. The mix is generally lush and rich, the odd voice swimming in the mix, delicate piano chords in places, keening cello - but primarily delivering all manner of synth sounds - choral effects, crystal arpeggios, smooth drones, aural cloudscapes. Where Is The Northern Sorrow brings a female voice to the fore - heavenly, ethereal and warm - courtesy of Cathryn Deering. Dramatic and expansive through light and serene - from deep piano stabs with a Middle-Eastern slant to clay drums and reverberating flutes - from floational weightlessness to percussive restfulness - from electronic sound synthesis to organic acoustic performance - this is an album of artful contrasts. Nevertheless, everything ties up effectively into a coherent whole. Colorful patches twinkle and bubble, ambient atmospheres drifting like oil on water - little is still for long. A compelling listen. The artwork for Salvaging The Past is sharp and atmospheric - water and cloud dominating the series of landscapes spread across the package. A dead tree, black against storm clouds fill the rear jewel-case panel alongside track titles and times. Grey water floods the inner booklet, a widening ripple pattern of elongated ovals spread out before half-submerged rocks - here we have notes to the listener explaining the project, credits, thanks and a list of inspirational artists. Salvaging The Past is released as the latest of Dean De Benedictis' offerings - having produced previous compositions in a variety of styles including IDM, tribal ambient and space music. Here he employs a variety of electronic tonalities, samples, and acoustic instruments such as mayahachi flute, bamboo flutes, cello, piano, voice, guitars,

8-9-2007 pagina 15 van 22

hand drums, and percussion. Promotional notes explain - "Our physical realm is comprised of drastically separate entities mix-matching and ambiguously aligning into one harmonious collage. Such is the underlying principal behind "Salvaging The Past.” The album brings together pieces written between the years 1992 and 2005. This CD will appeal to electronic fans at the ambient end of the spectrum - but contains sufficient melodic/harmonic content to appeal to electronic fans that like to have a clear tune to hold on to, an occasional beat to carry the mix and plenty of variety to hold the attention. CLUSTER - CLUSTER II (CD) Cluster's second album as a duo is a January, 1972 recording that is similar in style to the other albums released by the band to this point. Cluster 71's flirtations with spacey atmospheres are not as prevalent on II, though; II appears to be more directly a refinement of the Kluster sound with better technology. Like Moebius and Rodelius' previous work, Cluster II is mostly an album of drones and industrial atmospheres an ambient album before the label began to be applied to music. I like the record, though not as much as Cluster 71. For the first time, Cluster broke down their sound experiments into some bite-sized pieces. Considering the overall mission of ambient music, though, this kind of focus isn't necessarily a plus. Two of the shorter pieces stand out to me, though. "Plas" retains some of the spaciness found on much of Cluster 71; it sounds like floating through a spaceship's engine room in zero gravity. "Georgel" revisits this vibe somewhat, although there is a prominent drone that anchors the piece and gives it an eerie, macabre feel. My favorite track on the album is "Im Süden." Here, Cluster liberated themselves somewhat from pure beatless ambience and embraced minimalism. For the first time on a Cluster record, you can detect an actual musical phrase. It's a short one; it sounds like it's being played by an electric guitar and it's repeated throughout the 13-minute piece. To some extent, "Im Süden" presages the work that Fripp and Eno would later do on their No Pussyfooting album. Considering the ground breaking reputation of that album, "Im Süden" is quite an achievement. The other long track, "Live in der Fabrik," likewise experiments with repetition, though the repeated part is a machine-like, churning sound. Overall, I think Cluster II is pretty good, for what it is. I think it's a solid ambient album that has much to offer to fans of that style and which will appeal to electronic music historians as well. Matt P.

ANDREAS AKWARA - OCCULT SANCTUM (CD) This release from 2007 offers 71 minutes of majestic electronic music. Haunting tonalities churn in the background, while more strident electronics establish a pulsating frontal presence that gradually slides into a melodic flow of piercing notes and rich chords. As the music progresses, soothing rhythms enter the mix along with bouncy sequencing that gets things tastily moving. The introduction of choral voices lends a cathedral touch to the tune. A passage of saxophone contributes a striking diversion, giving way to cascading water drenching the choir. The third movement introduces chirping diodes to the heavenly melody. Remote strings are ponderously strummed, creating a pleasant tension that hints at even greater ascensions to come. Buzzing keyboards and portentous drum beats lend the next passage an escalation of melodrama. A certain hesitancy overcomes its reluctance and the music swells with astounding stamina. Conventional percussion rises from the thick electronic miasma to capture attention with a strong rhythmic presence.

8-9-2007 pagina 16 van 22

Peppy tempos further enliven things with the fifth movement. The velocity of the music is increasing, accumulating power with each passing moment. The rhythms gather vigor and volume as the electronics coalesce into a demonstrative melody of ultimate conviction. The sixth movement is brief and temperate, acting as a recuperative rest stop. In the seventh passage, wavery electronics prepare the audience for a stratospheric expansion. The 16 minute finale is soft and moody, allowing ambient soundscapes to flourish as a foundation for the pensive reprise of many previous elements in a sedate structure. The end is tender and reassuring. Akwara displays a distinct reverence in his compositions, evoking spirituality untainted by religion, stirring the soul with dramatic music. A richness permeates these tunes, injecting a density to the airy flow that remains delicate despite its serious devotion. Matt Howarth - Soniccuriosity

BEKKI WILLIAMS - EDGE OF HUMAN (CD) Orchestral pads and angelic wordless vocal coloring provide a gorgeous opening to 'Amber Dawn (Twilight Mix)'. An exquisite plucked string melody, which is mirrored by an impressive sequence, reaches for the heart. Comparisons to Andy Pickford's solo works have been made in the past and never more so would this apply. Energetic drums surge forward creating a wonderful feeling of euphoric joy. The awesome melodies come one after another, displaying a sensitive feminine touch. 'First Light (awakening)' has a decidedly Tangerine Dream 'Legend' feel. Massed strings swell creating a tremendously lush and uplifting backing over which faintly Celtic sounding lead lines whisper delicately from the middle of the mix. 'Firewalk' is like an orchestral score, all moody and brooding but with rousing, almost militaristic, drums. On 'Ephemeris' Gregorian chants mix with soprano voices creating the most tender of sounds over which a delicate tinkling sequence and stunning cello lead, complimented by equally as impressive acoustic guitar, weave their gorgeous magic. Electronic Music doesn't get any more beautiful than this. 'Where Times Collide' is a very busy number where drum flourishes drive over soft wordless vocal pads, sawing strings and massed choir effects heightening the excitement. Music to accompany an army surging over rolling hills! It's back to brooding realms for 'The Azmara Variations'. There is a slightly Eastern sound to the melodies but the backing once again made me think of 'Legend'. The mood lifts after the half way mark as brass leads alternate with strings then piano as we reach a joyous conclusion. Sequences bounce from the speakers as 'Ever-Changing Calm' surges forward. It's such a fun track full of syncopation and life. It's impossible to keep the body still. Dance, jump around the room- punch the air- whatever, as long as you don't remain on the sofa! One of my favorite tracks on the album. 'Xanthe's Garden' is initially another tender one with brass lead floating above windy effects. After this intro however rhythmic guitar and drums add a little pace but without completely overpowering the delicate melody. 'The Human Edge' is again somewhat Pickford like- during one of his more tender moments. Acoustic guitar mixes with gorgeous string sounds, weaving the most wonderful uplifting melodies that reach right for the soul. We finish with the original version of 'Amber Dawn' that appeared on the compilation album 'The Sky Goes all the way Home'. Melodically it is just as strong as the version which started the album but overall is more tender, with less of the driving power but all the beauty. DL

REDSHIFT - WILD 2 (CD) The first Wild disc was a 35-minute rarity intended for fans in

8-9-2007 pagina 17 van 22

attendance at one of their shows. Thankfully, Wild 2 is not as hard to find, a proper full CD release chock full of unreleased rehearsals and studio sessions from 1996 through 2002. “Fuel” starts things off, one of two tracks here that still had Redshift as a foursome with Rob Jenkins in attendance. It is a hybrid of “Aquamarine” and “Quenzer” from Faultline. “State 2” is an alternative working of one of my favorite Redshift tracks, “Static” from Ether. This one is a bit longer and more brooding, with extra electronic warbly bits here and there, very cool. But not everything here is just a variation on what has come before. “Prime” is a gem from the vaults, the band’s first-ever recording way back in 1996. Effervescent bubbly noises and dark touches blend just right. Unsettled and perhaps finding its way for the first several minutes, it settles into what would later become hallmarks of the band’s sound, those ever-present dramatic choirs, chugging bass lines, and hypnotic sequencing of course. “Iron Heart” includes a Redshift rarity, structured drum loops. From 1998, I could easily see this track fitting on Down Time. The disc finishes with a lengthy Jodrell Bank 1996 rehearsal, another sublime piece from another stonking good Redshift album. WELLENFELD - TRIP TO ILLUSION (CDR) Wellenfeld is a German duet who creates EM since 2003. As indicated on their website, Detef Dominiczak and Andreas Braun have no intentions to reinvent the wheel, but bring their poetic and melodious touch to EM universe. Trip to Illusion is their 3rd opus. If Cosmic Waves had astonished a new public with vigorous and harmonious compositions, the 2nd opus, Fusion, left these new fans perplexed with a quieter atmosphere. Trip to Illusion depicts the maturity acquired by the duet since. A harmonious album, with superb arrangements and surprises on each title, giving a specific identity to all of them, always respecting the melodious approach which had allured the fans on Cosmic Waves. A little like a symphonic progressive rock, Ring of Saturn opens on pompous and majestic synths. The rhythm is woven tight on one melodious synth, with a symphonic touch, where beautiful percussions crack, supporting a fluid tempo which increases in intensity on beautiful enveloping orchestral arrangements layers. Borderline to a Jarre sequencing line, the movement evolves on a beautiful synthetic refrain which sticks instantaneously to the ear. Ring of Saturn depicts extremely well Wellenfeld sonority. A very harmonious music with synths which multiplies the melodious lines, with orchestral arrangements sometimes enveloping, other times tearing, in order to create the maximum of emotion. And that works pretty well, because without really exploiting progressive topics with various musical directions or steps, Wellenfeld offers a pleasant synthetic music with light rhythms and convincing harmony. Moon 19 starts with a remote drone which initiates a tuneful movement on fluid percussions and a beautiful soft tempo. Beaded notes furrow this melody where another harmonious line is juxtaposed with the one already there, on beautiful orchestral layers. Black Hole hooks instantaneously the attention with its spiral tempo which circulates in rotation on dense synthetic coats. A bass groovy l ine takes the lead and solidifies a slow, sensual rhythm, coated with synthetic effects which whirl briskly. Keyboards keys which come and go in growths and decreases are completely brilliant. And that represents one of the strong points of Wellenfeld; capacity to create unexpected musical turns. Thus giving to each title, its particular character. Ocean Air would have been banal without it's would be synth circular which wraps and moves the track with emotion. A quiet title with against direction on the percussions play, givinga dubious direction to a beautiful melody. With Spaceroom 21, we penetrate in the atmospheric wakes of Wellenfeld, showing that the German duet controls the ambient as much as New

8-9-2007 pagina 18 van 22

Berlin School beat structure. Voyager is a beautiful light piece of music. Harmonious, keys fly and tinkle in a universe striated by layers with violin synth chords. Helium is more hammering. A heavy tempo on good pulsations as of the clear keys which resound within the four corners of a multi-colored universe of orchestral synth. More languorous, Starsurf scintillates on a heavy shower of voluptuous keys which fly with idleness in a melodious firmament. Sober and harmonious rhythm which is enriched by small keys and arrangements here and there, which create a unique atmosphere, specific to each title of Wellenfeld. Trip to Illusion is one of the most beautiful harmonious CD to appear this year. A pleasant surprised which is listened attentively, so much arrangements unforeseeable and are well inserted. Good compositions which should please this new generation of EM. The one that TD bring with shorter and melodious compositions, in a New Berlin School style but this one his bordering an almost fresh new Synth Pop. Sylvain Lupari

CHAD HOEFLER - QUIET GLOW (CD) As its title suggests, Quiet Glow is thematically centered around light moving over objects and through space, and perhaps one of the biggest (and probably intentional) ironies is that it's one of the best albums to listen to in near-complete darkness I've heard in some time. Opening track Incipience Electric counterbalances blissful ringing harmonic tones, insect-like buzzes and washing ambient pads with a veiled sense of underlying menace generated through the use of yawning bass chords that never quite recedes, imbuing much of the material with an intangibly dark edge that prevents proceedings from drifting into lava lamp ambience. Radiant Blue meanwhile introduces sparse metallic-sounding percussive tones and dubbed-out echoes into an ebbing backdrop of ambient warmth in a manner that beautifully contrasts delicate and harsh elements and also betrays Hoeflers classical training. A strong second album from Hoefler, topped off with a typically meticulous mixing job by US ambient/space music figurehead Robert Rich. Chris Downton

E=MOTION - RE-TRANCE-MISSION (CDR) Initially I got a tremendous fright. Is this E=Motion, the band I gave five stars for their previous release “A Dream Within A Dream”? The disc popped out of the cd-player to be studied a bit closer but yes, it indeed is “Re-Trance-Mission”, the latest of this retro companionship. But why then does the opener “Berlin Wavelength part 1” sounds like it originates form a dj-record, awful? Let’s call it a cosmetic imperfection, because from second track “Berlin Wavelength part 2” onwards it is all about old school EM in a modern package, what a joy. “Sequence Trance-mission parts 1 - 3”, “Space Caravan parts 1 - 3”, “Hypnotic Re-Trance-Mission”, it all sounds terrific, again the motto of this excellent release is: all aboard the retro train with the tasteful synths and sequencing. In 2005 E=Motion HAS to appear on E-live: we want E=Motion, E=Motion, E=Motion, ... !!!! André de Waal / E-dition magazine

THOM BRENNAN - SHIMMER (CDR) Five radiant tracks of soaring, shimmering ambience. Apart from the final track, there are no beats throughout the whole album. We have synth drones, sweeps of e-guitar and tinkling, sparkling chimes and bell trees all used to pull out and adorn long sustained drifts of sound. The album opens with the surprisingly brief 'Radiant Ice' at only 3.00" - however, the same densely layered chord structure is revisited on the final track 'Tundra', this time with the unexpected

8-9-2007 pagina 19 van 22

inclusion of some pitch manipulated taiko drums. The track Shimmer I sees the generally glassy liquid surface of Thom's soundscapes more greatly agitated than normal - the ambience being full of rippling tonal spangles, reverberations, gleams and twinkling textures. Thom's music of this period very effectively endeavors to evoke landscapes through sound. Hence the mood set is tranquil, dramatic, expansive. There is powerful use of heavily layered synthesized atmospheres and deep organic texture planes. The tonal range is wide and varied making use of the whole sonic spectrum from low groaning bass pad sounds to the shining sibilant sheen of the top end. The track titles channel the mood pointed at by the cover imagery - Radiant Ice | Cavelight | Shimmer I | Shimmer II | Tundra - so the sounds suggest light on water, ice crystals, breezes and rock formations. The main feature of the artwork on the version I have is the beautiful landscape imagery of Darrell Cox. A single scene is captured at different distances - a glowing grey/orange sunset sky lit with yellows, reflected in still water disturbed by the faintest of ripples and a solitary water bird. Black silhouetted trees and reflections of trees are in turn reflected in the solid black of the graphic panels. The text is functional, creating the minimum interference, sending the eye repeatedly back to the evocative photography. Five glorious studio improvisations that make up 'soundwork impressions' of pastoral panoramas. A CD to loop and leave on continual playback - bringing an intuitive warm serenity (despite the icy nature of some of the titles). I found that the drums on track 5 affected my feelings toward the whole CD - Thoms sonic scenery is never static, but once the drums roll in, the whole vista begins to move, evoking the cycles of nature, the very pulse of the earth. Even after the drums have faded once more, my consciousness of movement is heightened when listening to the other tracks. If you like 's music - this is not going to disappoint. Pure floating, ambient music with intriguing depth and color. The taiko drums on the final track might appeal to some of the world-fusion fans out there - although the underlying structure is still ambient and drifting rather than melodic. Music to lie back and float upon, to paint or create to, to form a calm reflective atmosphere. Morpheus

KUBUSSCHNITT - THE CUBE (CD) On this 72 minute release from 2000, the band produces some startling electronic music of a particularly ominous nature. Within seconds of its commencement, this music has plunged you far beyond your world. Deep into space, past Pluto and into mysterious interstellar realms. Here, the melodies tease the quantum particles with their surging sequences, agitating the molecules into dark motion. This tuneage is seething with numerous pulsations and bass tonalities. The harmonics may be keyboard-driven, but they swarm in a nebula of beyond-ambient electronics that are not unlike the gestation of a proto-star. Chords and cycles are drawn into the central melody to orbit with increasing pace. This action produces riffs of a dynamic quality, paying homage to the more deadly elements of the void. Intimating the promise of an alien threat from outside your world, Kubusschnitt generates electronic music that excites the listener's thrill factor. Whether plunging into a "Wormhole" or blotting out the sky with a "Hypercube", these compositions appeal to the audience's rhythmic sensibilities as well as the listener's dark side. This music acts like a subspace wake-up call for the psyche, tickling the brain with its insistent pace and smoldering density. Matt Howarth / Soniccuriosity

BIONIGHT - EGOHEART (CDR)

For some reason, EM from Italy has always been something of a rarity, especially when compared to Germany or the Netherlands.True, Baffo Banfi enjoyed some success on IC back in the 80s and, on a more obscure note one Ciro Perrino released a few albums way back when but these are the exceptions rather than the rule. Consisting of FaBIO Sbrizzi and the mysteriously named Mac, BIOnighT are doing their bit to put their country back on the EM map & this demo CDR certainly presses all the right EM buttons. Although they describe themselves as a 'Krautrock-cosmic-electronic duo from Italy' the 'krautrock' part of the description is a little suspect as this is pretty straightforward sequencer-based EM, so it's odds on that the retroheads will lap this one up. This is very much the case of the opening "Egoheart," which is firmly in Teutonic territory. The rhythmic cascades add a certain bite to the music as do the screaming synth leads. Easily discernable throughout is a definite sense of purpose with "Timegod" proving another track like this with chunky sequencers chugging away quite merrily with a surging & powerful style that makes for a more immediately accessible listen."Campoalto" also goes towards such styles but this is less direct with a more reflective feel, despite the chugging rhythmic backing. A definite spacey ambience pervades the 17-minute "Bionight" which comes the closest to emulating the Berliner Schule styles, especially Schulze's spacier works. The closing classically styled sections are especially impressive and an indication of the duo really putting their heart and soul into their music."Technoflight" is a very different animal to the rest of the band's output as a potent mix of spacey ambience and an accessible melody gently unfold over a laid back rhythm. I'm reminded slightly of Wavestar's classic track "Moonwind" (but without the Floyd-like guitar), a feeling which becomes more tangible once the Dysonesque synth strings make their presence felt as the track progresses. You might be wondering where the part of the title comes into this. Well, the answer is provided by the closing "Technofly" which is a Techno/trance version of the same track but with one little difference. The band claim that while most other acts make Techno versions of spacey tracks they've made a spacey version of a Techno track, same difference to the listener of course! This aside, both versions are worthwhile inclusions and provide a healthy dose of variety to the album. Although BIOnighT play it pretty safe as far as EM goes they provide an enjoyable album that is certain to have wide appeal among EM fans and retroheads in particular. Carl Jenkinson

SIGUR RóS / TAKK (CD) Iceland’s Sigur Rós’ claim to fame appears to be as a European bridge between 70s progressive rock ideas and modern alternative rock. The band has been tabbed by industry magazines such as Mojo and Uncut to spearhead a new kind of progress into alternative rock without all the pretentiousness that saddled classic English groups. Takk is the quintet’s fifth recording characterized by lush orchestral backdrops that serve as elemental foundations for their unique twist of the Cocteau Twins with Beach Boy child like harmonies and U2’s ambient textures. They rely on rather innocent music box instrumentation, sloggy rhythms and passionate performances to make atmospheres that compare with Coldplay’s best songs. At times the eleven well crafted and performed pieces seem to serve as a backdrop for a foreign film drama. Themes range from vibrant to outright precious that shows the band has firm grasp on the scope of their often ambiguous but precious statements. Lead singer Birgisson creates a style akin to Elizabeth Fraser or native homeland star Björk that is just plain surreal. “Sé Lest” is a representative track that features a backward loop introduction that spills into a lush vocal arrangement. are also part of the band’s palette to create a bright penetrating backdrop for the band to explore. I've read that the group delivers the goods in a live context and plan to check them out locally soon. Highly recommended. Jeff Melton

MOONBOOTER - TERALOGICA (CDR) Analogue pulses and distorted voices get 'First Sunset' underway in quite a menacing way. Thick string pads and a doleful kick drum add to the atmosphere. I'm reminded of Numan intros, but perhaps that's just me. A simple piano refrain and synth melody weave through the thick backing. The track breaks down to pads and melody at the 4.30 min mark, before a triumphant close. A classy opening, very much in the Otarion and Detlef Keller (his solo work) vein. 'Strandmusique' is immediately busy, with syncopated beats and a modern stuttering sequence. A repetitive, marimba-like melody adds a Jarre-like sheen to the piece. It's a stirring track, perfect for lovers of up-tempo, melodic EM. A white noise sequence and vocal drone suggest more abstract territory as we begin 'Let there be music'. Soon a simple melody and second, very 'squelchy' sequence enter and the mood lightens. A disembodied/treated female vocal repeats the title many times during the track which I found a little irritating I must say. The melodics are very synth-poppy, recalling Vince Clarke in particular. 'Water Melody' opens with the sound of, er, water! Classical piano soon takes over, with subtle pads and effects in the background. Violin adds support and cements the classical feel. Pizzicato strings and guitar are then added. It's a very tame, but beautiful track. Glorious analogue arpeggios and contemporary beats open 'Under the surface', and are soon joined by vast pads. The beats solidify, a distorted vocal sample intones in the background and simple melodies snake through the mix. This is a classy track. Symphonic pads and an electrical pulse open 'Analog bubbles'. A wonderfully syncopated beat box and simple analog melody again recall the implacable Vince Clarke. By the middle of the track we get quite a 'trancey' section with arpeggiated leads. This took me back to my youth and the joys of synth-pop. The 'Wind blows' is up next and is a wonderfully animated body mover, with heavy beats and lovely melodic touches. The next three tracks present a little problem. 'Burning for you' features vocals and really belongs on a modern chill-out compilation. The music comprises warm pads and the sound of an old CR-78 beatbox (I believe). ' Beaachjam' is all smoky electric piano, strummed acoustic guitar and laid-back beats. It's the kind of thing you get on a gardening or interiors show. Perhaps they're best programmed out? Abstract effects open 'Wrong Order', before a crunchy, contemporary rhythm and sequence build. A lovely analog melody fits the backing perfectly. The album is back on track now I feel. 'Orgasmik' brings the CD to a climax! From laid back beginnings it gradually builds into a trance anthem! A tough one this. Four of the tracks are going to alienate hard-core. But the rest would be enjoyed by Otarion or Axxess (and possibly Skin Mechanix) fans. The quality of the music and production is very high, so perhaps it's worth a try for fans of the artists I've mentioned. WP
