Cambridge Companion Shakespeare on Film
This page intentionally left blank Film adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays are increasingly popular and now figure prominently in the study of his work and its reception. This lively Companion is a collection of critical and historical essays on the films adapted from, and inspired by, Shakespeare’s plays. An international team of leading scholars discuss Shakespearean films from a variety of perspectives:as works of art in their own right; as products of the international movie industry; in terms of cinematic and theatrical genres; and as the work of particular directors from Laurence Olivier and Orson Welles to Franco Zeffirelli and Kenneth Branagh. They also consider specific issues such as the portrayal of Shakespeare’s women and the supernatural. The emphasis is on feature films for cinema, rather than television, with strong cov- erage of Hamlet, Richard III, Macbeth, King Lear and Romeo and Juliet. A guide to further reading and a useful filmography are also provided. Russell Jackson is Reader in Shakespeare Studies and Deputy Director of the Shakespeare Institute, University of Birmingham. He has worked as a textual adviser on several feature films including Shakespeare in Love and Kenneth Branagh’s Henry V, Much Ado About Nothing, Hamlet and Love’s Labour’s Lost. He is co-editor of Shakespeare: An Illustrated Stage History (1996) and two volumes in the Players of Shakespeare series. He has also edited Oscar Wilde’s plays. GAMES OF SOVIET DEMOCRACY IDEOLOGICAL DISCUSSIONS IN SCIENCES AROUND 1948 RECONSIDERED. Alexei Kojevnikov* Alexei Kojevnikov Alexei Kojevnikov Since 1948, the Lysenko case has become generally known as the symbol of the ideological dic- tate in science and its damaging consequences. It is often explained that in the years following World War II, the Stalinist leadership launched an ideological and nationalistic campaign aimed at the creation of Marxist-Leninist and/or distinctively Russian, non-Western science. Concepts and theories which were found idealistic or bourgeois were banned and their supporters si- lenced. In no other science was this process completed to the same degree as in biology after the infamous Session of the Soviet Academy of Agricultural Sciences in August 1948, at which Lysenko declared the victory of his "Michurinist biology" over presumably idealistic "formal" genetics. The August Session, in turn, served as the model for a number of other ideological dis- cussions in various scholarly disciplines. This widely accepted interpretation encounters, however, two serious difficulties. The first ari- ses from a selective focus on one particular debate which fits stereotypes the best. It was critics of the Stalinist system who singled out the Lysenko case as the most important example of the application of Soviet ideology to science. The communist party viewed it differently. It did re- gard the event as a major achievement of the party ideological work and a great contribution to the progress of science (until 1964 when the mistake was quietly acknowledged). But what is more interesting and less expected, is that communists claimed five main ideological successes in science rather than one. -

New works are continually discovered and added to this bibliography. Readers and researchers are invited to suggest additional content. This volume contains an alphabetical listing of audio-visual materials. Coverage of this material begins around 1994, the final year covered by De Waal's bibliography, but may not yet be totally up-to-date (given the ongoing nature of this bibliography). It is hoped that other titles will be added at a later date. The first volume in this supplement focuses on monographic and serial titles, arranged alphabetically by author or main entry. The second volume presents the exact same information arranged by subject. The third volume focuses on the periodical literature of Doyle and Holmes, listing individual articles alphabetically. The fourth volume includes "core" or "primary" citations from the periodical literature. The fifth volume includes "passing" or "secondary" references to Doyle or Holmes in the periodical literature. The sixth volume organizes the periodical literature according to De Waal's original categories. As the bibliography expands, additional annotations will be provided in order to give the researcher a better idea on the exact Holmesian or Doylean reference contained in each article.
