Joseph Jachimski Dear Friends, Bud Kahler As you gather for the 68th Annual Convention of the Maryland Catholic War Fred Karr Veterans, I offer you a most cordial word of greeting.

John Kreiner As Veterans, you have demonstrated your love of country. You have been Reginald Malloy willing to put your lives and livelihood on the line to defend our nation’s free- doms and way of life. All of us are in your debt. Robert Norton So too, we are grateful to your families who shared in your sacrifices on Leo Puklis behalf of our country. James Sparks, Sr As citizens of Maryland, we a justly proud. Estelle Weber Anthony Yablonski I also want to thank you for serving our national both as citizens and as men and women of faith. Bedrock to our nation is the guarantee of religious free- dom. In these days when religious liberty is increasingly under challenge, I thank you for your faith, courage and patriotism. May God bless you and keep you always in his love. O loving God, be with us as we honor the lives of those who served our nation, for those who have died and are now in your care. Accept our prayers on their behalf. May they have a place in your house, may they rest in peace, and may light perpetually shine upon them. Look with mercy upon those among us, family and friends, who are be- reaved by their passing. Nursing Leadership … an excerpt from the annals’ of Vietnam

Colonel Mildred I. Clark, Chief of the Corps from 1963 to 1967 and Colonel Anna Mae Hays, Chief of the Corps from 1967 to 1971 led the Army Nurse Corps dur- ing the Vietnam war. On 11 June 1970, COL Hays also became a Brigadier General the first woman and the first nurse in American military history to attain general officer rank. The first head-quarters position in Vietnam held by an Army Nurse was that of Nurse Consultant in the office of the Surgeon, Vietnam (USAV). She was concurrently the Chief Nurse of the 3rd Field Hospital, Saigon. In September of 1965 the Nurse Consultant became a full-time position, and in May, 1966, Headquarters, Department of the Army authorized a Nursing Division in the U.S. Army Republic of Vietnam (USARV) Surgeon’s Of- fice. The Nurse Consultant became the Chief Nurse, USARV as well as Chief Nurse of the newly operational 44th Medical Brigade. In March, 1967 the role of Assistant Chief Nurse, UASARV became operational.

The Maryland CWV membership praises all the nursing corps from the Civil War through all of our other wars, world wars, police actions, and skirmishes with a deep gratitude in our hearts and minds, we salute these gallant women for their service to our great country in time of medical need.

It is our privilege and honor to announce our Maryland Catholic War Veteran of 2014
