Buildings vary in size, design, structure and even raw materials. Yet, we are quick to realize that the true distinctiveness of a structure rests not in how it looks, but the purpose which it serves. Thus, it is with great joy and gratitude to the Almighty that we celebrate the dedication of our new Synagogue.

Historically and traditionally the Synagogue serves a three-fold purpose:

It is the Bais Tefilah — The House of Prayer — in which one grows spiritually as he concretizes his relationship with his Creator.

It is the Bais Knesses — The House of Assembly — where one grows socially, as he joins in fellowship and friendship with his co-religionists.

It is the Bais Medrash — The House of Study — in which one grows intellectu- ally by nourishing his being on the eternal truths of his religion.

Hence, our Synagogue affords us a three-fold opportunity to grow and develop in our relationship with God, in our appreciation for our fellowmen and in our personal enrichment.

May we rise to the challenge and take full advantage of this opportunity by utilizing to the utmost the facilities now available.

In behalf of my wife, Temma, and myself I rejoice at being able to extend a hearty MAZEL TOV to the entire Congregation for this magnificent edifice. In the words of the Psalmist we pray "May Thy favor, Lord our God, rest upon us; estab- ." lish for us the work of our hands. . . We have readied a very happy day in the history of our congregation. We are dedicating our new build-

ings, and it shoidd he an inspiration and a joy to the community to see this project come to a successful conclusion. Each and every one of you has been instru- mental in the erecting of these fine buildings. The dedi-

cation of these buildings, however, is only a beginning

for our membership. . . . With these new facilities our membership can undertake new, better, and bigger

projects. It is important that we remain and continue to be active and to undertake projects that are bene- ficial to our members, to our community, and to our nation. Edward Silver, President H. P. Hebrew Congregation

HARRY AND MARION SILVERS West Green Drive The dedication of this building represents the largest undertaking a community as small as the High Point Jewish Community could have possibly envisioned. Nearly three years ago no one would have tiiought we could have accomplished the feat we have; I am still rather awed by both its beauty and inspiration for reverence which one cannot help but feel throughout this entire structure. I con- gratulate each and everyone of you for your generosity in giving of yourselves, your unlimited patience and your cooperation in making this job one more treasure for me to remember. I want to especially thank those of you who served so diligently with me and gave untiringly of yourselves.

In planning this building we tried to bring the old to the new; for in the new must lie die wisdom that can only be gained from a knowledge of the past. Our deepest thanks shall always go to those of the past who, through what they gave then, have helped us kindle ourselves anew.

When I made my outgoing speech as President of die B'nai Israel Congregation,

I used that old cliche' — "all good things must come to an end." Little did I dream at that time that our Congregation would see the miracle of erecting a new sanctu- ary and educational building or that I would play a part in such. Here for all to witness is just such a miracle — a glorious edifice to G-d — but, to make "the light of His countenance shine over us," it must be used!

The heritage of our forefathers, taught to our children through us, is the founda- tion upon which this structure rests. Since the realization of hope for peace and brotherhood in the world lies only in strong faith in almighty G-d, we have here the means for such fervent prayers. I thank G-d that I was blessed with both the privilege and opportunity to play my small part in this buildings erection, and it is my earnest hope that the B'nai Israel Congregation will join hands and hearts in its use to its fullest capacity. 38 - As President of Ladies Auxiliary I extend greetings to each of you.

It is with a great deal of pride that I speak of our organization: of what

it stands for, its work and accomplishments through the years, and

especially the goals which it has reached in this duration of time. It is far beyond our dreams to be able to look upon our new Synagogue and

Center and to have the privilege to work for our aims in it and also for

it — working hand in hand also with the B'nai Israel Congregation when

called upon. It is an honor to be one of such a group of outgoing mem- bers as ours.

I beg that all of us be blessed with the privilege to continue working in the right paths, to reach higher and better goals in unity.

High Point B'nai B'rith Lodge No. 1238

AZA boys in touch football and after a very hard fought battle the AZA was defeated 6-0. The annual AZA B'nai B'rith softball game was played during the B'nai B'rith sponsored Sunday School picnic and the men again came out victorious by the narrow margin of one run. Sandy Levine was in charge of planning the picnic.

We met our Service Fund obligation by selling 81 Passport to Israel tickets. This project was under the chairmanship of Howard Weiss. We sponsored a Bonds for Israel program with New York comedian Joey Russell supplying an evening of hilarious Jew- ish humor. The sale of bonds was a major success with a total of $15,000 sold. Our total was number one in the state for B'nai B'rith sponsored Bonds for Israel solicitations.
