D .in Biblical Studies, and preparing to move east for his new position as assista nt professo r of Hebrew Bible at Cani sius College in Buff a lo,NY .Kim’s story refl ects a series of such changes and life- tra nsforma tions, as he exp lores what it means to be a perso n of fa ith, a scholar,a teacher,and an Asian - A m erican. Born to a Buddh i st fami ly in Korea, he came to the Uni ted Sta tes at the age of 10 and converted to Chr istian i ty at 18.Kim was struggling at the time with exi stentia l questions about mora lity and death that he could not reso lve thr ough Buddh i sm. He was also FROM THE PRESIDENT 2 trying to understa nd what it is to be “‘ a hyphenated being.’Am I a Korean living in the Uni ted Sta tes, ”he exp lains, “or an Am erican wh o happens to be Korean, or somethi ng else ? ” In Chr istian i ty Kim MATSUOKA ON PLURALISM 3 foun d a reso lution to his centra l concerns, both about salvation and about his own identity. Kim had many more changes ahead of him . He went to engineering ASIAN THEOLOGIES AT THE GTU 3 sc hool first, then switched to phi loso phy.After gra dua ting from New York Uni versity,he enr olled in Princeton Theological Semi nary,intending to work in a parish. He earned his M.Div.from Princeton, and a Th . M .( m agna cum laude) from Emory Uni versity. COMMENCEMENT 2004 4-5 When the 1992 Los Angeles riots took place, Kim foun d that his faith jour ney was shi fting again. As he saw it, the Korean immi gr a nt chur ches weren’t able to respond eff ectively to the crisis, reacting in a more insular way.“As second- g enera tion Koreans, I felt we needed to formulate a ETHICS AND theology that could respond coherently to situa tions lik e the riots , ”he says.     Together in Prayer: The Art and Gift of Group Spiritual Direction By Susan S. Phillips Susan S. Phillips (PhD), sociologist, spiritual director, and executive director of New College Berkeley, an affiliate of the Graduate Theological Union, is one of the keynote speakers at the 2020 Conference of the Association of Doctor of Ministry Education. Abstract: For nearly ten years—one-fourth of our institutional life—New College Berkeley has devoted itself to fostering spiritual formation and soul care among adult Christians, clergy and lay, through spiritual direction groups placed throughout the Greater Bay Area and, for the past three years, also facilitating spiritual direction groups for undergraduate and graduate students. Our constituency of primarily Protestant, Gospel-committed, church-going, biblically literate Christians expressed increasing hunger for spiritual nourishment, and the spiritual direction groups have been a core component of our response to them. This article describes this ministry as experienced by the directees, the directors, and by the author who has supervised the directors and overseen the program. This spiritual discipline is recommended for students in all levels of theological education, including those in MDiv, DMin, and PhD programs. As each academic year ends at New College Berkeley, participants in our nine-month spiritual direction groups write to us about the experience. One wrote: This was my first experience with anything that was so introspective. I was searching for a place where I could step back and re-learn how to be open to God.
