This is the 28th consecutive year that these awards have been given in South Florida. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Suncoast Chapter PO Box 840738 • Pembroke Pines, FL 33084 • Tel. (954) 322-3171 • Fax (954) 322-3178 • E-mail: [email protected] FEBRUARY 2016 CHAPTER NEWS Allan Farrell began his career as a production assistant with WPBT in 1979. He progressed to associate producer and then to cinematographer when a position opened. Over the years, Allan has worked on numerous special projects, including the documentary series “Common Ground”, nationally broadcast “Décor” and “Lady of the Glades”. As an adjunct instructor at Palm Beach State College, he taught editing and post production for more than 15 years. Currently, Allan is a full-time freelancer, both shooting and editing for ITV, whose programs are distributed worldwide. Joseph Harzinski started his broadcast career as an intern in the sports department at WTVJ. He continued to intern at WTVJ for four years while attending Florida International University. After graduating in 1978, he was hired as a full-time photographer at WTVJ. From hurricanes and drug wars of the 1980’s to Muhammad Ali training before the last fight of his career — Joe has covered the best and worst of times in South Florida. He has had the privilege to work with the likes of Tony Segreto, Ike Seamans, Al Sunshine, David Bloom, Ralph Renick and Katie Couric to name a few. Joe is proud of his career and the many years he has spent at WTVJ uncovering Miami’s past history and the present. Kelley Mitchell will be honored posthumously. For several years, Kelley Mitchell was a mainstay in South Florida television. In fact, the bulk of her 30-plus year career was spent here. She joined WSVN in 1991 as a general assignment reporter and weekend anchor. By January 1994, management named her primary co-anchor alongside Rick Sanchez. She remained at WSVN until 1998, when she joined WPLG and served in a number of capacities: reporting and on occasion, anchoring there as well. She later moved on to radio, captivating audiences at WLRN. Virtually from the start, and right up until the time she passed away last year, Kelley was unquestionably dedicated to her craft — and to the new generation of broadcast journalists who followed in her footsteps. Kelley cared deeply about the work of our industry and the people who are privileged to be a part of it. Her legacy lives on in many of them. Lisa Petrillo is the Entertainment and Lifestyle Reporter for WFOR, CBS4. Throughout her years as South Florida’s premiere Entertainment Reporter, Lisa has interviewed many celebrities, among them Paul McCartney, Sting, Tom Cruise, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Lopez, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Elton John, Tom Hanks, Warren Beatty and the late Audrey Hepburn. In addition to reporting on entertainment, Lisa hosts the CBS4 “Taste of the Town” segment celebrating South Florida’s growing culinary scene and reports on fashion, travel and other lifestyle trends. Lisa’s professional career began in 1986 as Communications Manager for the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau. That year, she began her television career at WPLG as a producer. She was named the station’s entertainment reporter in 1988. Following WPLG, Lisa became a national correspondent on the NBC show “Real Life”. She joined WFOR, CBS4 in 2001 as Entertainment and Lifestyle Reporter. Omar Romay is the founder and CEO of America TeVe. For the last 18 years, Omar has worked day in and day out, to make America TeVe the successful company it has become, growing it from 20 to over 300 employees, and reaching audience levels that no one ever imagined. America TeVe’s success has served as a model for many other companies that have copied it’s formula, resulting in more competition, more people employed, and a better quality of local programming for Hispanics in South Florida. Motivated by Omar’s passion and strive for excellence, America TeVe’s programs and employees have won a total of 100 Suncoast Emmy® Awards as well as other industry recognitions. Willard Shepard is a four-time Emmy® award winning journalist, attorney and Gulf War fighter pilot. Willard has brought his unique insight to NBC 6 viewers as an anchor and investigative reporter for more than 20 years. Shepard, a member of the Florida Bar, uses his legal skills to develop consumer investigations that uncover fraud in private business and government. He is a graduate of the Florida International University College of Law and specializes in media and aviation legal issues. Shepard graduated cum laude from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications and Theater. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. iii Abstract This study examines combat operations from the 2003 invasion of Iraq War from the “ground up.” It utilizes unique first-person accounts that offer insights into the realities of modern warfare which include effects on soldiers, the local population, and journalists who were tasked with reporting on the action. It affirms the value of media embedding to the historian, as hundreds of journalists witnessed major combat operations firsthand. This line of argument stands in stark contrast to other academic assessments of the embedding program, which have criticized it by claiming media bias and military censorship. Here, an examination of the cultural and social dynamics of an army at war provides agency to soldiers, combat reporters, and innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.

  • Embedded Reporters: What Are Americans Getting?
Embedded Reporters: What Are Americans Getting? For More Information Contact: Tom Rosenstiel, Director, Project for Excellence in Journalism Amy Mitchell, Associate Director Matt Carlson, Wally Dean, Dante Chinni, Atiba Pertilla, Research Nancy Anderson, Tom Avila, Staff Embedded Reporters: What Are Americans Getting? Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has suggested we are getting only “slices” of the war. Other observers have likened the media coverage to seeing the battlefield through “a soda straw.” The battle for Iraq is war as we’ve never it seen before. It is the first full-scale American military engagement in the age of the Internet, multiple cable channels and a mixed media culture that has stretched the definition of journalism. The most noted characteristic of the media coverage so far, however, is the new system of “embedding” some 600 journalists with American and British troops. What are Americans getting on television from this “embedded” reporting? How close to the action are the “embeds” getting? Who are they talking to? What are they talking about? To provide some framework for the discussion, the Project for Excellence in Journalism conducted a content analysis of the embedded reports on television during three of the first six days of the war. The Project is affiliated with Columbia University and funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts. The embedded coverage, the research found, is largely anecdotal. It’s both exciting and dull, combat focused, and mostly live and unedited. Much of it lacks context but it is usually rich in detail. It has all the virtues and vices of reporting only what you can see.

  • CNN Anchor Speaks at OU About Finding Success
Oakland University - News Archive - CNN anchor speaks at OU about finding success Monday, November 24, 2003 CNN anchor speaks at OU about finding success By Jeff Samoray, OU Web Writer Soledad O’Brien took an entry-level job at TV station WBZ in Boston, an NBC affiliate, in 1989. But she wasn’t reporting or writing news scripts – her main behind-the-scenes responsibility was to pull staples from the office bulletin board. Today, O’Brien co-anchors “American Morning,” CNN’s flagship morning program. Her high-profile position follows an 11-year stint with NBC. During that time, she reported for the network’s “Today Show,” covering notable events such the Columbine school shooting, the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, the September 11 terrorist attacks, and others. She also anchored weekend editions of “NBC Nightly News” and co-anchored NBC’s weekend coverage of the war in Iraq on the network’s “Weekend Today” show. In her lecture, “The Road to Success,” hosted by Oakland University’s Student Life Lecture Board on Nov. 20, O’Brien credited her meteoric rise to hard work, the support of her family and on-the-job mentors. “When I entered this business, my idea of personal success was different from what it is today,” said O’Brien before an audience of several hundred in the Oakland Center Banquet Room. “There was a time when I thought being an anchor would be my dream come true. But there’s also more to life. My mornings begin at 3:30 a.m., but I can still pick up my daughters from pre-school and spend time with my family.

  • Here's Why Most New Network TV Shows Will Flop
September 2019 #74 __________________________________________________________________________________________ _____ Here’s Why Most New Network TV Shows Will Flop By Steve Sternberg These are the best of times for TV viewers, but it might be the worst of times for broadcast TV. The mortality rate of new broadcast series is higher than ever. Out of 68 new primetime scripted series premiering in the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons, only 11 (16%) will still be on the air in fall 2019. Here are some thoughts on the whys and wherefores. The new TV season is not as relevant as it used to be. Prior to the early 2000s, the new fall TV season was one of the few entertainment topics discussed throughout the summer on syndicated TV shows such as Entertainment Tonight, Extra, and Access Hollywood, and print magazines such as People, Us, and Entertainment Weekly. The broadcast networks aired mostly repeats, cable networks contained mostly off-network reruns and reality, and except for the occasional movie blockbuster or celebrity scandal, there wasn’t much else to focus on. But that was before original scripted series started proliferating on various cable networks during the summer months, and before more than half the country subscribed to at least one streaming service. The new broadcast season simply doesn’t get as much press as it used to. There are new scripted series available to viewers year-round. A Sternberg Report Sponsored Message Unrivaled Reach.
