With campuses at Coimbatore, Amritapuri, Kochi, Bangalore and Mysore, Amrita University is emerging as one of the fastest growing institutions of higher learning in the country. More than twenty American universities, many of whom are ranked among the best universities of the world including Harvard, Princeton, Purdue, Yale, Georgia Institute of Technology, Universities of Massachusetts -Amherst, Washington, Texas - Austin, Illinois œ Urbana Champaign, Wisconsin-Madison, North Dakota, Maryland, Michigan and University of California campuses at Berkeley, San Diego, Los Angeles and Santa Cruz, Carnegie Mellon University - Pittsburgh, Cornell University œ Ithaca and State University of New York - Buffalo are part of this historic agreement along with Indian institutions led by Amrita University, ISRO, and Government of India‘s Department of Science and Technology (DST). This Indo-US E-learning Network will enhance science and engineering education in India using the new satellite e-learning network (EDUSAT), launched by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to transmit educational programs to multiple educational institutions throughout India. Three of the leading technology companies in the world, Microsoft, Qualcomm, and Cadence are funding this initiative. These American universities will depute their reputed faculty to teach and guide research to a large population of Indian students at hundreds of colleges and universities in India via Amrita University‘s E-learning setup and ISRO‘s Educational satellite (EDUSAT). The program will focus on a broad number of areas: engineering and computer science, information and communication technologies, materials science, biotechnology and bioinformatics, nanotechnology, medical sciences, management sciences and other areas. Three Leading American professors Dr. N. Narayana Rao and Dr. Jose Schutt-Aine from University of Illinois- Urbana Champaign and Dr. Ramalingam Sridhar from State University of New York œ Buffalo have taken courses in Electromagnetics, Solid State Devices and Advanced Networking in 2006. The classes were beamed to around 40 leading Indian colleges and universities. (http://www.amrita.edu/indous) Indo-European Research Initiatives Wireless Sensor Network œ WINSOC Consortium Amrita University has joined the Indo-European initiative in Wireless Sensor Networks - WINSOC (Wireless Sensor Networks with Self-Organization Capabilities for Critical and Emergency Applications consortium). The WINSOC consortium consists of eleven organizations from seven countries. The 11 partners are: SCOM, DUNE, SAP, INFO, EPFL, CCSS, UPC, ICOM, CEA, AMRITA, and ANTRIX Each of the partners has expertise in various areas. The partners are from industry, research institutes and universities. Antrix (ISRO) and Amrita are the only organizations from India. Amrita will develop a wireless sensor network, which will be able to predict environmental risks like landslide. The data collected from the wireless sensors has to be fed through the VRC network to a remote station. The data has to be analyzed and the warning has to be sent accordingly. Tie-up with Milano University, Italy and Technical University of Munich, Germany Amrita University is also pursuing various projects with foreign universities like Milano University, Italy in Autonomous Bio-inspired robots and in Cyber security with Technical University of Munich, Germany.
