WTSW the Dwarves July 15 WHERE TO START WITH... THE LOWDOWN: IT’S QUITE possible that more has been written about the Dwarves’ behaviour than has ever been said about their music. And not without good reason: their first ever UK gig, for instance, ended after just four songs when the band started a brawl with the entire audience. They were also dropped by Sub Pop for faking the death of guitarist Hewhocannotbena- med (musical differences seemed like a boring reason for his departure, though the label thought otherwise) and generally left behind more than a two decade’s worth of carnage and venereal disease of the sort that would shame the Vikings. None of which would count for shit if they hadn’t written some truly brilliant music. • American Punk: the Relations Between Punk Rock, Hardcore, and American Culture
American Punk: The Relations between Punk Rock, Hardcore, and American Culture Gerfried Ambrosch ABSTRACT Punk culture has its roots on both sides of the Atlantic. Despite continuous cross-fertiliza- tion, the British and the American punk traditions exhibit distinct features. There are notable aesthetic and lyrical differences, for instance. The causes for these dissimilarities stem from the different cultural, social, and economic preconditions that gave rise to punk in these places in the mid-1970s. In the U. K., punk was mainly a movement of frustrated working-class youths who occupied London’s high-rise blocks and whose families’ livelihoods were threatened by a declin- ing economy and rising unemployment. Conversely, in America, punk emerged as a middle-class phenomenon and a reaction to feelings of social and cultural alienation in the context of suburban life. Even city slickers such as the Ramones, New York’s counterpart to London’s Sex Pistols and the United States’ first ‘official’ well-known punk rock group, made reference to the mythology of suburbia (not just as a place but as a state of mind, and an ideal, as well), advancing a subver- sive critique of American culture as a whole. Engaging critically with mainstream U.S. culture, American punk’s constitutive other, punk developed an alternative sense of Americanness. Since the mid-1970s, punk has produced a plethora of bands and sub-scenes all around the world. This phenomenon began almost simultaneously on both sides of the Atlantic—in London and in New York, to be precise—and has since spread to the most remote corners of the world.

  • The Life & Near Death Story of Patty Schemel
REVIEWS "Describing the parabolic ups and downs of the career of Hole drummer Patty Schemel, tricked-up docu Hit So Hard features never-before-witnessed tour documentation recorded on Schemel's own Hi-8 camera, including her extended stay at the digs of band frontwoman Courtney Love just before Kurt Cobain's suicide. This recently recovered ace-in-the-Hole footage is supplemented by helmer P. David Ebersole's newly shot interviews, presented in split-screen or apportioned in brief bursts. Pic benefits from the percussionist's plainspokenness, and should attract grunge curiosity-seekers in theatrical and tube play." VARIETY "A raw, unflinching look at Schemel's hard-knock life." WALL STREET JOURNAL "Necessary viewing for any Hole fan. The footage was ample and intimate -- scenes of Schemel passed out in her hotel room after shooting heroin, Love moshing backstage at Lollapalooza with the Offspring's Dexter Holland and, most eerily, Love at home with Kurt Cobain and Frances Bean. It's heartbreaking." SPIN MAGAZINE "Hit So Hard links one milestone of Schemel’s survival to another with a caustic grace lent by the subject herself: Alcoholic at age 12. Out, tormented lesbian at 17. Junkie by her early 20s. On and off the wagon numerous times by her late 20s. A homeless, crack-addicted, music-industry exile by the end of the ’90s. It’s all there in the open, backed up with fascinating, never-before-seen archival footage featuring Love and her husband Kurt Cobain." MOVIELINE "This pull-no-punches portrait of the hell-and-back life of Patty Schemel is no ordinary rockumentary.

  • Applied Eugenics
CHAPTER III DIFFERENCES AMONG MEN While Mr. Jefferson, when he wrote into the Declaration of Independence his belief in the self-evidence of the truth that all men are created equal, may have been thinking of legal rights merely, he was expressing an opinion common among philosophers of his time. J. J. Rousseau it was who made the idea popular, and it met with widespread acceptance for many years. It is not surprising, therefore, that the phrase has long been a favorite with the demagogue and the utopian. Even now the doctrine is by no means dead. The American educational system is based largely on this dogma, and much of the political system seems to be grounded on it. It can be seen in the tenets of labor unions, in the practice of many philanthropies--traces may be found almost anywhere one turns, in fact. Common enough as applied to mental qualities, the theory of human equality is even more widely held of "moral" qualities. Men are considered to be equally responsible for their conduct, and failure to conform to the accepted code in this respect brings punishment. It is sometimes conceded that men have had differing opportunities to learn the principles of morality; but given equal opportunities, it is almost universally held that failure to follow the principles indicates not inability but unwillingness. In short, public opinion rarely admits that men may differ in their inherent capacity to act morally. In view of its almost universal and unquestioned, although half unconscious, acceptance as part of the structure of society, it becomes of the utmost importance that this doctrine of human equality should be examined by scientific methods.

3/29/2011 The Dwarves' Blag Dahlia Mouths Off - … The Short-But-Sweet Interview: The Dwarves' Blag Dahlia Blag Dahlia explains why the Dwarves are one of the last true punk bands, and to borrow a new song title, why "The Dwarves Are Still The Best Band Ever." By Greg Prato at 10:00 AM March 14, 2011 http://www.ugo.com/music/the-short-but-sweet-interview-the-dwarves-blag-dahlia Few modern day rock bands are as unpredictable and confrontational on stage as the Dwarves are. Known for an over-the-top live act that involves a singer (Blag Dahlia) who never thinks twice to mix it up with the audience and a guitarist (HeWhoCannotBeNamed) who enjoys performing only in a mask and little else, the band is set to celebrate their 25th anniversary with a new album, The Dwarves Are Born Again , which arrives on May 3 via the MVD Entertainment Group . Recently, Blag was courageous enough to undergo "The Short-But-Sweet Interview" with UGO. UGO: Who are some of the special guests you've assembled for Born Again ? Blag Dahlia: Dexter Holland, Spike Slawson, Eric Valentine, Gary Owens, Nick Oliveri, and Dwarves alumni like Sgt. Saltpeter, Vadge Moore. It's a cast of thousands! UGO: How was it recording once more with former Dwarves Vadge Moore and Sgt. Saltpeter? Blag Dahlia: Brilliant, they keep getting more demented as the years roll on. Credit: Jesse Fischer Especially Vadge! He is the guy who did all the things fans thought I did. UGO: What are the social ramifications of titling a song "I Masturbate Me"? Blag Dahlia: We can be accused of redundancy on that title, but the music is by Josh Freese, yet another celebrity music guy we fooled into playing on the record.

(Jyväskylä Studies in Humanities ISSN ISBN Diss In the past, exploration of music has focused on analysis by formalists, refferentialists and through social, semiotic and anthropological viewpoints including Schenkerian-Yeston (1977), Semiotic-Eco (1977), and Motivic-Ruwet (1987). Although each has its merits in the formal analysis of music, few explore genre identification. In musical genre studies the exploration of musical, paramusical (extramusical) and perceptual elements are essential to facilitate a full understanding of the subject area. Johnson in Zorn supports such a perspective in his argument for a holistic approach to musical analysis (Zorn 2000:29). The multidisciplinary nature of music and the discourses embodied in its creation, development and dissemination utilise a range of signifiers for identification advocating the utilisation of a “hybrid” (Wickens 1999) methodology combining quantitative and qualitative analysis.
