Statistical annex 143 African Region of the World Health Organization Algeria Mauritania Cabo Verde Mali Niger Eritrea Chad Senegal Gambia Guinea Bissau Nigeria Ethiopia South Guinea Central African Sudan Sierra Leone Republic Liberia Benin Ghana Togo Burkina Faso Uganda Kenya Democratic Côte d’Ivoire Sao Tome and Principe Gabon Republic Rwanda Cameroon of the Congo Burundi United Equatorial Guinea Republic of Congo Tanzania Seychelles Comoros Angola Zambia Zimbabwe Malawi Namibia Mauritius Botswana Mozambique Madagascar Swaziland South Africa Lesotho This report refers to the 47 Member States of the WHO African Region, as illustrated in this map. The WHO African Region does not include all the countries on the African continent and is not limited to sub-Saharan Africa. The “Region” is used when referring to the African Region as defined by WHO, while “Africa” is used when discussing the conti- nent as a whole, including its islands. The WHO Regional Office for Africa is based in Brazzaville in the Congo. It should be noted that the World Bank divides the African continent into two regions: North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, while UNICEF divides it into three regions: Eastern and South Africa; West and Central Africa; and North Africa. 144 Statistical annex Summary indicators The summary tables in this report include some of the most recent health sta- tistics available from the 47 Member States of the Region. They are based on evidence available in 2013 and represent the best estimates of WHO for a broad range of key public health indicators. The statistics cover the following categories: 1. Demographic and socioeconomic statistics 2. Life expectancy and mortality 3. Cause-specific mortality and morbidity 4. Selected infectious diseases 5. Health service coverage 6. Risk factors 7. Health systems 8. Health expenditure 9. Health inequities These estimates are computed by WHO using standardized categories and methods in order to enhance cross-national comparability. They may not agree with estimates at country level and are not necessarily the official statistics of Member States. More detailed information is available from the African Health Observatory (https://www.aho.afro.who.int/en) and the Global Health Observatory (http:// www.who.int/gho/en). For a definition of the health statistics' categories included in this annex, as well as the rationale for their inclusion and the estimation methods used in their productions, see section 7, Explanatory notes of the Atlas of African health statis- tics 2014. 145 The health of the people: what works MDG 5 MDG 2 MDG 1 MDG 8 Member State Population a Civil registration coverage Crude Crude
